Converting Movie Files to Compatible Format

I got some mpg files from my moms camera that records crap, I want to import those files into iMovie HD. When I do it reguraly the sound will not import, I know the sound is there cause it plays in QuickTime.

What FREE application can I use to convert it to a compatible format?
