From Apple:
Improvements
This update offers many reliability and compatibility improvements. These are just a few of the enhancements and improvements included:
Stickies
Addresses an issue in which Stickies could unexpectedly quit when creating a new note.
Addresses an issue in which new Stickies are invisible.
Stickies windows can now be minimized (an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 through 10.3.8).
Safari
Accessing certain websites, such as msnbc.com, mail.yahoo.com, ticketmaster.com, and others, no longer displays a "bad server response" alert that could occur in Safari.
Addresses an issue in which "safe downloads" files are not automatically opened after downloading.
SSL webpages (pages with URLs that start with "https://") load faster in Safari.
Adds some important Verisign root certificates to Safari, allowing you to connect to certain secure websites that you might not have been able to surf before.
Adds other trusted root certificates to Safari, such as VISA and RSA.
Finder
Addresses an issue in which copied files could become fragmented (but still usable) when you copy more than one file at the same time in the Finder.
Addresses a rare issue in which a file could become damaged when copying to a FAT16- or FAT32-formatted volume.
Improves reliability when mounting (making available) a disk image that's larger than 4.7 GB.
More
Addresses slow vertical tracking and intermittent trackpad behavior on PowerBook G4 12-inch 1.5GHz, 15-inch 1.67/1.5GHz, and 17-inch 1.67GHz computers.
Adds an "Apple Internal 56k Modem (v.32)" modem choice that you can use if you have difficulty using Verizon's Airfone Jet Connect service.
Addresses an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.6 and later in which the Calculator window won't appear if the Speak Button Pressed or Speak Total options are enabled.
Fixes an issue at the login window, where clicking the small space just below the bottom user account picture would produce this alert:
"Internal Error *** -[NSCF Array objectAtIndex:]: index(-1) beyond bounds (X)" (where X is the number of user accounts shown).
Addresses an issue in which the startup time in Mac OS X 10.3.6 through 10.3.8 may be extended if a large number of PostScript fonts are installed.
If your PowerBook G4 sometimes wakes up with a kernel panic, installing this update may help.
Addresses a data loss issue that could occur when syncing your iDisk at the same time that .Mac servers are experiencing heavy usage.
Avoids a potential Mail issue if the application is running when Daylight Savings Time changes.
Addresses some formatting issues that could occur when replying to HTML messages in Mail.

it's really odd. it lets you highlight the entire window contents, even blank space and lets you drag the window around from any spot in the window. edit: does the highlight thing anyway. i have no idea what it does then. it wouldnt load pithhelmet when i started safari because it "hadn't been tested" and it didn't connect to my wifi network on startup but other than that it's all good. dock curiously seems better.

I'm going to give this bit a thumbs-down. I suppose I should be grateful to Apple for upgrading my Safari to 1.3, but adding Yahoo, eBay, etc. to my Bookmarks bar without me asking for it? Just not classy. But no, it's not a big deal.
Safari has also seemed a bit sluggish at first, but that is just a meaningless early feeling, I'll give it some time.

Hope it fixes the bug I've been having where Mail quits every time I save changes to account settings. That only happens on my Powerbook, so I won't be able to test it until later (using Powermac now).
Edit: Seems to have greatly improved Safari's pop up blocker for me too, as I've visited several sites that previously always resulted in a pop up, and so far none of them have successfully launched a popup.

if page doesn't define background color like
<BODY BGCOLOR=#FFFFFF>
content will be transparent
it's easy to check:
start your apache server (system preferences->sharing->personal web sharing
go to you ~/Sites folder and edit your index.html file (remove BGCOLOR
attribute from the BODY element so it should look like
<BODY>
in safari go to the site localhost/~<your user name>
so if your username is smith
go to the localhost/~smith and enjoy

Ran software update, intalled 10.3.9, rebooted, immediately repaired disk permissions..... fired up Azureus and it loads fine.
ghostees-Computer:~ ghostee$ java -version
java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)
Running Azureus version 2.2.0.2
It doesn't load at all for you vouder? I havn't tried loading a torrent yet, but the launch went successfully except for the nag screen. :D Guess I need to get around to giving the project a few $.

Uhh, anybody else think the release date slipped a bit on this one?
Or are they just being really proactive for 2006 :D
It is possible the update was held off until late on Friday so as to address the upcoming release of new PM G5s on Sunday.
If the update was released earlier, it would give people more time to pick it apart and find info about upcoming new PMs, release it on the Friday before so the updates are available.
Or I could be reading into the relase date like a crazy person, but the crazy thing is to bother with the DST fix when Tiger is out in 2 weeks.

lets not start this debate again. anyone with a brain knows that if another update is coming, they can go with 10.3.10. they didnt run out of numbers.
I don't mind starting this debate again. Mathematically, 10.3.10 is the equivalent of 10.3.1. But then the second decimal point is mathematically incorrect, so anything's possible ...

Toe,
The "deaf node" syndrome is where a node will stop responding to ethernet traffic. Yet, if you log into the node via the console, you can see that everything APPEARS fine. If you shut down the interface, and bring it back up, all is well.
The bug has to do with corrupted frames being received, i.e. a 1504 byte frame when the node is expecting a 1500 byte frame, etc.
When things were REALLY bad, we could guarantee crash 1/2 of a rack of machines in 10 minutes.

I don't mind starting this debate again. Mathematically, 10.3.10 is the equivalent of 10.3.1. But then the second decimal point is mathematically incorrect, so anything's possible ...
I know most of these posts are just joking, but quite a few sound serious. I mean if you were going to invoke decimal point rules here, then what about IP addresses? It seems these people want to look at the version number without the second dot since it makes a nice comfortable, safe, boring floating point number, so that the current version is really 10.39. I also suppose if Apple keeps releasing point updates to 10.3, then they should start numbering them 10.3.91, 10.3.92, ..., 10.3.99, 10.3.991, etc. Maybe they could just switch to BASIC line numbering strategy, and we would have 100380, 100390, 100391, 100392, ..., 100400. That would give us 9 more update numbers before 100400 (10.4) :)
:p The ultimate question of life, the MacOS and everything is: what will be the numbering scheme at the first "dot" level? Will we have an eternity of 10.9 releases before OS 11? Or will we thumb our noses at the decimal police and have 10.10 through 10.99 and even 10.100.10 before turning to XI?

I'm going to give this bit a thumbs-down. I suppose I should be grateful to Apple for upgrading my Safari to 1.3, but adding Yahoo, eBay, etc. to my Bookmarks bar without me asking for it? Just not classy. But no, it's not a big deal.
Safari has also seemed a bit sluggish at first, but that is just a meaningless early feeling, I'll give it some time.
Somehow I don't think this was intentional on their part.

Kinda seems like Apple is trying to shake out potential compatibility issues with Tiger before Tiger is released. These last after-the-announcement 10.x.x fixes appear to serve a nice transitional purpose. 10.3.9 will be very helpful both for people who don't upgrade to Tiger for a while (for compatibility with new apps), and for people who will be upgrading soon.

Can you reset the power manager on a PMG4? You can on PowerBooks and I believe it helps reset some fan issues sometimes. Sorry, I can't recall the procedure on PBooks.

A segmentation fault occurs when your program tries to access memory locations that haven't been allocated for the program's use. Here are some common errors that will cause this problem:
scanf("%d", number);
In this case, number is integer. scanf() expects you to pass it the address of the variable you want to read an integer into. But, the writer has fogotten to use the `&' before number to give scanf the address of the variable. If the value of number happened to be 3, scanf() would try to access memory location 3, which is not accessible by normal users. The correct way to access the address of number would be to place a `&' (ampersand) before number:
scanf("%d", &number);
Another common segmentation fault occurs when you try to access an array index which is out of range. Let's say you set up an array of integers:
int integers[80];
If, in your program, you try to use an index (the number within the brackets) over 79, you will ``step out of your memory bounds'', which causes a segmentation fault. To correct this, rethink your array bounds or the code that is using the array.

Just like those who have posted before me, I'm having Java issues. No Java programs run- and I get a "Segmentation Fault" when I: $java -version
The good news is that my Jawa is working fine with 10.3.9. He (much unlike his cousin java) is doing a great job of scavenging droids... and it may be just me, but I think he's scavenging a bit zippier than he did with 10.3.8

15" PB 1.33
I get the following when I type it:
java version "1.4.2_05"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.4)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode)
I hope this is right.

So what in the hell? Seems like there is no easy fix for me. Blah. I NEED JAVA! as;ldkfja;dsflj
First, check for another Java: in terminal type "which java"
Then go there. It's a link to a link that should eventually lead to somewhere with an actual executable file.
In the terminal CD to the directory I've listed here do an ls -l
If it couldn't update this, you may need to reinstall...

I checked Console, and this is what I'm getting:

I will install it via combo update, although I have 10.3.8 installed on my machine. It worked better in the case of 10.3.7-10.3.8. I hope this update solves the problem with my random kernel panics at startup in my G5... (see specs)

From Apple:Addresses an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.6 and later in which the Calculator window won't appear if the Speak Button Pressed or Speak Total options are enabled.
Thank god. It was getting to be a pain in the ass to trash the calculator prefs every time I wanted to use the damn thing.

You mentioned target mode, so do you have a working external? Can you copy the libncurses.5.dylib to /usr/lib from another box?

Are you holding C while starting up? Try using Option instead. If that doesn't work, I'd personally try disconnecting the hard drive, but that might be going overboard a bit.

it's really odd. it lets you highlight the entire window contents, even blank space and lets you drag the window around from any spot in the window.
Did you also notice that you can drag the contents to the desktop and it creates a small file with all of the text in it? I don't know if it did this before, but it's pretty cool.
Also Limewire loads fine here. I don't have any other Java programs loaded though, so I'm not sure what else would have been affected.

Hmm. Power down, yank the drive cable, start from CD (just to show that you can). Zap P-Ram if necessary. Then shut down again, reconnect drive, reboot from CD (or external) and see if that gets you to a place where you can manipulate the internal drive.

I just noticed that the Control-click menu has changed for links. What used to be "Copy Link to Clipboard" is now "Copy Link". I was momentarily mystified when I looked for "Copy Link to Clipboard", thinking I had done something wrong. When I finally read the words, I saw the choice was still there under its new name.
And they were right to change it, now that I think about it. The word "Copy" means to copy something to the Clipboard, so the phrase "to Clipboard" is redundant.

Seems like there are some problems, i think i should hold off for a little.

Well I took the drive out of the firewire casing (its an IDE drive) and plugged it into my FreeBSD box. It sees it just fine, so now I'm upgrading my server (it) to 5.3 so I can read the HFS+ partition and copy everything off of it. I think my firewire firmware on the casing may be bad now though but I'm not sure yet

According to

On a whim, I downloaded Security Update 2005-002 from the OS X download site and reinstalled it (I had previously installed it from Software Update prior to installing 10.3.9). This fixed java and now my java based applications work!
Brilliant! I too had the java problem, reinstalled the Security Update, now everything's pukka.

I think the following will do the job
run from terminal
sudo update_prebinding
installing any update will just launch that command

Anybody else notice that the date on the 10.3.9 updaters are April 12, 2005. Looks like Apple has been holding out on us the last three days!!

Since 10.3.7 I have had to send, edit, send again to get every other email to leave my computer. FINALLY in 10.3.9 they always send right away. Thank GOD Apple finally figured out what was wrong with Mail and fixed it. I was beginning to think I would need a Tiger upgrade to get rid of my problem. And I was not alone in experiencing this problem. It was widespread among SBC Global DSL customers. :)

Another very small change in Safari. Before, pressing command-shift-up arrow/down arrow would take you to the top/bottom of the page, that keyboard shortcut no longer works. Command-shirt-left arrow/right arrow still works for navigating between tabs though.Command+Up and Down does the top bottom thing. So they just simplified it. I did not know that Command+Shift left/right navigated between Tabs. Thanks munkle. Where did you learn that anyway? :)

This is the first upgrade that seems to have made any difference to me. Safari seems much better at handling lots of animation. (I expect, of course, that nothing has been changed in that area, and this is just an illusion.)

Earlier in the thread someone mentioned reinstalling security update 2005-002 fixed it, and it also worked for me. Get it at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2005002macosx1034orlater.html and see if it works for you.

I thought I picked it up in the guide next to the command but under 'Window' in Safari it's listed as Command+{/} to navigate between tabs, how odd!

Because MS doesn't give NTFS specs to anyone. That's why there's no OS (to my knowledge) except for Windows 2000/XP that can write to NTFS 5.0 partitions. If there were drivers that allowed you to do that, they would have been written by reverse engineering. Now you also know why Tiger doesn't have NTFS write support, either.

I upgraded my 600 mhz iBook and had some problems on reboot. The gray Apple screen would come up, and then the entire machine would shut down. The battery was close to fully charged, but on a whim I plugged it into the wall and Viola, it started with no problem and now works just fine. Weird... No problems with my frankenMac file server. It's an old beige G3 desktop that I have added firewire, usb, and a 450mgz G4 processor to. I'm ExpostFacto and it works just fine, it sees my firewire drive and everything.

Installed on my PB and PM (see sig below) with no problems. Safari and Java are fine and Safari is faster for me.
There's a great blog entry from David Hyatt on the new Safari 1.3 you can read http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/hyatt/archives/2005_04.html#007962
Also this MacFixit article details the issues with Safari plugins as well as a more complex solution to the Java problem(if you have it). http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20050416011813477

Works for me. there is a Java applet on that page though. Try running Java from the Terminal. If it crashes it sounds like you have the Java problem that several others have reported. A fix that seems to work is reinstalling security update 2005-002.

Totally screwed up Safari.app and Mail.app. Since I didn't have a web-browser, I wasn't able to find out that SIMBL was at fault. After several frustrating hours struggling to get online, I bit the bullet and in a fit of rage reinstalled OSX from scratch.
Doubly angry now I've found out what was to blame, but honestly, how is it possible that Apple didn't realise the incompatibility between the new WebKit and SIMBL?!
Spending hours reinstalling all my stuff now. Next up: the whole frickin' Apple Pro suite (sans Motion, because I'm too poor). Mathematica 5.1 refuses to start: must beg Wolfram Research for a serial number. Don't have my iWork CD with me - seems to work but God knows what may be missing from the library. Fonts have been raped (no surprise there).
Etc. etc. etc.

- Mail, Safari and Stickies application reliability
Mail now remembers that you clicked "load images" on an email, and loads them in the preview pane when you go back to that email after looking at another one.
Thank you for fixing that annoyance, Apple! :)

It seems early adopters of this new OS update (10.3.9) are having some issues with Java-based programs and other applications. Do you think you can minimize or reduce the chance of problems if you install the combo update for 10.3.9? Maybe the other posters who said they had problems with this update downloaded from the software update feature from System Preferences. Any comment on this?

Yup. I may have been unclear. The Update didn't rape the fonts: my angry reinstallation did. Most of them ended up in /Previous System/Previous System 1/ but some of them didn't.
Infuriating, but it shouldn't worry most users.

I used my Ti PB as a guinea pig for the 10.3.9 update. It had 10.3.8. Now after the successful combo update from Apple website, I cannot use Safari anymore as it does not open. I guess I will keep my 15" PB at 10.3.8 (working well without problems) and my 12" PB at 10.3.7 (working well without problems). I think the old adage comes into play: if it's not broken, don't fix it.
Repair permissions before the download and after the donwload (X2). Re-start twice to no avail.

Immediately after this update, I was able to increase my video settings on World Of Warcraft by a SUBSTANTIAL amount, running on my lowly dual 867 G4
Has anyone else noticed better performance in games? Tell me I'm not going mad, I found the increase to be quite astounding

BIGGEST improvement is the resizing!! So smooth and much much much nicer! Very pleased and also start up times are noticeably faster.
