I'm wondering if anyone else who is using BetterTouchTool experiences this. When switching spaces with the four finger swipe, I get this rapid stuttering that look ugly and also sometimes skips a space when switching. Just trying to determine if it's BetterTouchTool or a specific gesture/setting I have in it.

I can confirm that the issue does not occur when I quit out of BTT.

Okay cool, something probably went wrong went importing my gesture profile from Snow Leopard. I'll try adding the gestures manually and see what happens then. Thanks for the reply.

I can't say I've noticed this either. Are you using the Lion four finger swipe to switch spaces, or are you using a BTT four finger swipe to invoke the space switching keyboard commands? I'm using Lion's built-in gesture for spaces.

Yeah, mine works well (I was SO afraid I'd lose it when Lion came out; kudos to the developer! It's really the first must-have utility for Lion IMHO).

Check for gesture conflicts; I had a couple when I first installed Lion.

Inside of BTT, do you have any keyboard shortcuts assigned to CTRL-Left Arrow or CTRL-Right Arrow? If so, they'll likely cause a conflict, giving you the ugly stuttering. The solution is to re-assign Lion's keyboard command for switching between spaces. You can do this in System Prefs->Keyboard->Mission Control.

One thing to remember is that BetterTouchTools "sensing" abilities aren't as fluid and great as Lion's built-in gestures.

Test it yourself: Turn on Lion's four-finger swipe Expose gesture. Use it rapidly, up down up down up down. Now turn it off and set BetterTouchTool to do the same thing. Try it rapidly again. It takes a second to register and it often doesn't recognize your gestures if they aren't perfect

I don't think that's always true, at least in my experience. Gesture's are more or less equivalently recognized, but the main advantage of BTT is being able to modify particular parameters for gesture recognition. Being able to change how hard you need to tap for a gesture to register for different types of taps, for example, is extremely useful, and something that I wish existed for the default gestures.

Of course, that being said, if I like using the default gesture for an action, I will stick with it in Apple's settings instead of setting in BTT. In one way you are correct because there are times when gestures in BTT inhibit the recognition of other tasks (e.g. enabling 2 finger vertical swipes with a Magic Mouse prevents scrolling with two fingers down and moving only one finger. Without using BTT's 2 finger vertical swipes, it works fine).

You were right! I forgot that in SL, I had actually (and presciently haha) set the four finger side swipe gestures to control left and right arrow for switching spaces. Removing that fixed it things. Thanks!

I disagree. I've had just as many gesture screw-ups with built-in gestures as I have with BTT. I don't think it has anything to do with BTT, it's more likely than not just user error.

Apple's and BTT's gestures tend to trigger equally well for me, but I prefer the built-in ones where they have them, since they tend to give you finer control, such as being able to move only partway into the next space to check something and then go back to the current space without even needed to fully switch.
