View Full Version : Whose Avatar do you stop for?
CanadaRAM
Apr 16, 2005, 02:04 AM
OK, is there anyone else who stops halfway through a thread just to wait for Raven VII's avatar to do its thing, then laugh and carry on?
First time I saw it, I thought, "now there's a naff looking 'tar", then, after looking shifty for a moment it .. (I'll leave this out so newbies can experience for themselves)... and I fell over laughing.
So - who elses Avatar do you stop for.
edesignuk's ever changing, ever the same fixation?
Who else?

Yeah, much the same here. I love edesign's, Raven VII's and Mr Andersons'. But where's yours CanadaRAM? ;) How about a maple leaf made out of memory chips?

Heh, working on it. But I just got home after working since 8AM and it's just gone midnight... soon, real soon.
Problem is, the bar is set so high already...

You can always just rip something off one of the major I.T. companies...
Like maybe Apple, Sun or... Microsoft? ;)

Well as most people probably do, I usually check edesignuk's avatar for the weekly photo of Keira, that and wdlove's animated finder icon with OS X genie effect.
I remember a lot of people's avatars, but those are the one's I like to watch :D

Yeah, I'm quite a fan of yours. It's from Shrek II, right? I'm always interested in what makes someone decide what their 'tar is, because it's kind of like their self-assigned face for MacRumors. So is there any reason for Puss-in-boots, just out of interest?

i love avatars. i stop for mr anderson's, nermal's, i used to get confused by wdlove's when it would be at the bottom of the page near my dock but now that my dock is tiny that doesn't happen anymore :p i also used to love stoid's back when it was tony the tiger and errm....who used to have the avatar with the storm trooper dancing in a parking lot? loved that one. i must admit i really like my own :o but my favorite is prolly iGary's ever-changing Jobs avatar. :D
edit: w00t! 1000 posts! *parties*
double edit: actually it's 1004 but i just now noticed im a 65816
edit x3: my 'tar lost some awesomeness for the 65816 edition but that's ok

I don't really "stop" for anyone's 'tar. I just use them to quickly identify people. I've found that if you get used to a person with a certain 'tar, when they change it, their posts just don't seem the same. Ya, I'm weird like that...

I am trying for the first time to post mine.
I have a cut paper self portrait that I'd like to do.
It says it is Cutout.jpg 4KB on disk (1.601) bytes
When I sent it to photoshop to resize for web it reads width 100 pixels and height 133 pixels
smooth bicubic
JPG low
desired file size 100 k
Then I save it and it appears in my
"There has been an error in the upload. Please ensure that the file has been correctly selected and that the upload"
Anybody know what I am doing wrong?

some of my favorite 'tars:
Photorun's harmonica-playin', foot-tappin' squirrel always makes me smile
AL-FAMOUS' old Stormtrooper 'tar was kickin' - wish it would make a reappearance
edesignuk - some pic's are better than others', but you have to admire the tenacity
Mr. Anderson - always miss the old one when it changes, always like the new one
jsw's moon 'tar is very well-done
Silent Panda - what a dancer!
abhishekit - cracks me up every time
MattG - Arrested Development rocks
vollspacken - You Know It..!
nuckinfutz - been there, done that

I really like Agreenster's avatar too, and Anderson's are always cool - the current one, the G3D one, the zooming one, and one before that I couldn't remember right now. And I loved iLikeMyiMac's cat iMac avatar, it was really cute. Too bad he doesn't use that anymore :)

Most all of the avatars show great creativity and imagination... but the reason I stop for 'tars isn't because of the 'tar itself, but for the posts.
If I see BlueVelvet's 'tar, I'll stop and read the post. Always worthwhile.
Same with JSW, edesignuk, and several others.
Its because I value what they say.
Unfortunately, not everyone puts as much thought into their posts as they do their avatar. :o

Hey, Agreenster, I love your avatar. I think it's the border that makes it, because it really looks as if it's jumping out as it hangs over. I was just thinking it would be cool to have it so it jumped out over the forum, rather than in it's own little square, then I thought, I know, you should make the white surround the same grey colour as the forum background, then it would look like it was a hole in the forum.
Just a thought!

There's an animated version of mine somewhere, I saw it years ago in a documentary about Eascher, but I've never seen it since, if anyone has a sniff of it let me know.
I loved Mr. A's last one, the revolving metal sphere, and iGav's monkey is pretty iconic.
I'm an audio bloke, I have very little visual acuity, I don't like it when avatars change, I can't recognise the posters as easily.
Didn't someone have the Star Wars kid? That was cool.

I found this reply to my posts very amusing, but since all my posts have been removed, it has lost it's impact, which is a real shame.
Why my posts have been removed is another question, I was only making a valid point as regarding entitlement to an Avatar after 500 posts.
Obviously critisism regarding certain aspects of MacRumours is not tolerated and it is only a matter of time before this post is also removed.
From the Forum rules:
Non-direct-personal insults, such as: "that is an idiotic comment" are frowned upon.
If that is the case, why have my posts been removed but the non-direct-personal insult "I'm with stupid" remains?
The fact that the original post that I was refering to remains, means that I was not off topic.
"The point of moderation is not to censor topics", you could have fooled me!
I'll try emailing this fellow Arn and see what happens.

Why my posts have been removed is another question, I was only making a valid point as regarding entitlement to an Avatar after 500 posts. You spammed the thread with 4 pointless posts in a row. Spam = deleted. End of story.
If you want to make a point then feel free, but you don't do it like that, because as you see, it disappears!
...course, you're wasting your breath. It's been gone over, many, many times. Nothing is about to change.

From the rules (http://forums.macrumors.com/announcement.php?f=4) 2) Spam. The real thing... not just being a prolific poster. ie. Someone posting the same exact post in 10 different threads. Someone posting multiple pointless posts in the same thread. This will get your account banned -- and get your IP banned from the forums and site where you won't even be able to load the site.
Edit: Beaten by a Mod mini, this time... I got to get faster at searching... ;)

I fail to see that saying that I always look out for Thatwendigo's avatar because he always has something interesting to say and is always well informed, meets the criterea of your argument.
And as for wasting my breath because nothing's going to change, I wasn't actually trying to change anything, I know the position of MacRumours, I've been visiting these forums for long enough, but I was under the misaprehension that the moderators were in posession of a sense of humour, something which the following poster Lacero thankfully did. And pointless they certainly weren't.
As for feeling free to express my opinion.... but it will disappear, I find this not only somewhat contradictory, but under the circumstances I think a simple edit would have sufficed.
I belong to an obviously small group who visit these forums regularly (several times a day) and who don't feel the need to paste your threads full of every last addled thought they may have, and therefore the prospect of avatar remains sadly a very distant dream.
I personaly find it very tiresome wading through pages of senseless one-liners contributed from your regulars, that are consistantly off topic and rarely constructive, and I find it rather ironic that my posts high-lighting this fact are the only ones to be deleted.
But what suprised me most was the aggresive tone of the reply, if I were a serial poster I could understand it.
From the rules:

It's actually more of an "eye opening" than a wink... I also stick my tongue out. It only happened every ten seconds so it was more of an "Easter Egg". Although I was really just trying to dislodge some bad bamboo.

His last album was full of that imagery, bright flashes of airbrushing, sleek and slightly cartoonish features. I really love the image of him in front of the big arched window in the This is the New **** video, all the blues and the ragged hair, but very boyish for him.
Colojohnboy: I'm still here :D and thanks! the kid notorious one was my favorite too, but the series got cancelled so fast, and no one knew who it was, sigh. But eventually I might be dorky and resurrect it.
I'm terribly uncreative when it comes to 'tars, it's why i don't change it much. But the current one (Billy Joe Armstrong making out with a crazed male fan) isn't very clear, and i'm meaning to replace it... but i didn't want to do it at the same time as a name change, which is confusing enough.

Whose Avatar do you stop for?
My friends on an other forum, I would have one on here if you didn't heed 7,000 posts to have an avatar.
I run 2 forums, we dropped our limit because people did lots of useless posts to gain Avatar, and file upload rights. I see allot of that here with new posters. (some say the same with me :P )

But how much traffic do these forums see? I imagine it'd be a different issue if they were relatively quiet but here on Macrumors it'd be a nightmare if everyone had a 'tar. Can you just imagine the extra storage/bandwidth that'd have to be provided?
Also, I take the posts by people with 'tars a little more seriously. They're generally/usually more senior members of the forums and have a better understanding of how things work around here.

Great, and valid points.
One has about 1000 members, and the other about 100. I will give in to say that the 2 sites I run are much smaller, however bandwidth and storage are not an issue, as the avatars are set to only link from outside. The only avatar limit I have, limits upload privileges to only more senior members, but anyone can have an avatar if they choose to, as long as it is hosted some place else.
On a side note,
A site I do freelance articles for has about 44,000 members, with about 25% member activity in a 24 hour time period. There tends to be a similar amount of people online with that site, as here during any given point in the day. with members around the world.
It is a BMW related car forum, and in the car culture the possibilities of getting offensive Avatars tends to be more common then on the Computer scene. Granted they have a avatar limit, but it is set to 100, and the avatars are no more offensive then on here, just tend to be more car related. Their limit of 100 was put into place to let people learn the ropes of the forums, they had issues with people posting 1 item, then putting up some offensive avatar.
The arguement stating that people need to learn the ropes is fine, but it dosen't take 500 posts to learn the rules, or to have contributed to the positive flow of information and helping others. For some people (not including myself as I am chatty :) ) that can take years to reach that number.
on your second point,
That is one downside with labels.
In my case, I have been using Macintosh computers since I was 12, and have been working on Macintosh and PC hardware since the mid 90's. When I first discovered these forums, and tried to help people with questions, my then "Newbee" label caused my input on a couple of threads to be ignored. in those cases people with more "posts" opinion was considered over mine, even if we were saying the exact same thing. Granted my being ignored may have been caused by the way I posted. However I see instances were people take the advice of someone with a higher post count over those with less it on my forums, and other websites all the time. This has since become less of an issue for me on Macrumors because of my new "Macrumors Regular" label.
But I am going off topic, this post isn't in regards to the psychological impact of labels on Macintosh and Automotive forum subscribers.

Sorry my 7,000 was highly misleading.
I tend to be chatty, and enjoy bopping in on quite a few topics. (including this one)
however,
I enjoy helping people, and have assisted in both Macintosh, PC, and Ipod troubleshooting issues with successful results on this website.
I can say with some certainty, that many people with similar post counts as low (or lower) then mine, have done more to assist Macrumors members then many people with over 500. I have run into many avatar equipped members that seem to bring nothing more then anti Macintosh vibes to these forums, and seem to enjoy getting a rise out of fellow Macrumors members.

********.
There's been a number of times on these forums where someone would spam their asses off and eventually get an avatar (if they weren't banned first) and there has been members with avatars who have been banned. There is no reason to respect someone if they have an avatar or not. The only reason they have one is if they have reached 500 posts (or won it in an avatar contest). This should not automatically earn them respect.

even being a 601 doesnt mean that you should get more respect
Unfortunately it's not a matter of whether or not 'tard people (people with 'tars ;) ) should get respect but rather that they do - whether or not it's deserved. Well, that's what I reckon anyway. Either way, 500 posts does show a level of persistence that can be a bit daunting if ever you should want to take on a 'tard person in a debate on these forums. It shows that they probably have a bit of experience with forum-type discussions.

Even then I don't expect to be respected just because I have "Moderator" after my title, I believe respect is earned through word and deed, I was delighted to be asked to become a mod here because I like this place so much, and I think the diligence of the mod team help to make it so.
I'm sure I'd be busted straight back to the ranks if I turned into a mutant trollmod... :D

My recollection of history is that Argentina attacked and took ownership of the Falkland Islands. Margaret Thatcher went to war to take back the Falkland islands under ownership of England again. So she didn't start the war. Not to start a war here, it should be left alone. We are just on two sides of the coin. I greatly admire her.

Thatcher almost invited the invasion with a series of calculated diplomatic insults in Argentina, she could have diffused the situation at any point and stopped short of outright war.
She knew a war in the Falklands was winnable (only just as it turned out) and that her popularity afterwards would ensure an election win she wouldn't otherwise get.
She may have been a brilliant politician, but she was evil and grasping, and she killed my friends to preserve her job. I have nothing but contempt for her.

i cant beleive you are still talking about Mrs. T!
just about what you said above. if it hadnt been for her economic reforms and tackling of the trade unions our economy would have been in a recession a long time ago instead of just the slow down that we have had. many people wrongly put all this down to gordon brown but the foundations were well and truly put in place in the thatcher years. she made the economy more mobile and resilliant and her tackling of the trade unions was the best thing she did in my opinion.

Since I'll be changing it eventually when another Qful idea comes to mind, I'll post a copy of it here so your question and my answer will still make sense in the year 2000.
Umm... Doctor Q, that's very thoughtful and all, but have you checked iCal recently? ;)

(I was trying to type 2200 but my fingers were disobeying.)

:D Fair enough, maybe the change to x86 will remedy this little problem...
Sorry, but I had to bring Intel in here somehow.

But rather than spoil the fun, I'll tell you a simple way to find out what it is. Control-click my avatar to the left, Open Image, and note the filename. Google the part in double quotes, which is the official name of something I admire, and you'll find out what it is. I applied a simple transformation to make myself a nice Q.
It's upside down, (gotta remember Q, the buttons on the camera are on the TOP side).
But it's in Santa Barbara, it's the Jerry Garcia Memorial "Tomb of the unknown hitchiker".

Haven't Laslo Panaflex been mentioned? I love his avatars. Especially the drummer.
His new one is.. horrifyingly awesome. Kind of like a car-crash.. you don't want to look, but man, there might be a mangled body or something!
Gird your loins people.. I give you Laslo Panaflex (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?userid=16655)

I love how I'm not mentioned in ten pages. Thanks guys.
Sorry about that StarbucksSam. ;) Going by your title, do you happen to be a Starbucks aficionado?
My wife & I both are by the way.
Thank you Doctor Q, I was wondering about your Avatar. That is realy very clever. ;)

Heh, thanks guys, I've always liked my avatar too, I made it a while ago for another forum (which I no longer post in), and have been wanting to use here since I started seriously posting here.
I also like that avatar where this big guy/thing slowly walks into view, then trips up. I forget who has that avatar, but that one cracks me up :D
wdlove's avatar is awesome too.
Great avatars all around! :D
Freaky. Are you sure you're the original maker? Your avatar is everywhere, check this out:
