Now this is crazy:

For people with the Kindle Special Offers from Amazon, they released a 20% off coupon that works on all the new Macbook Airs and Macbook Pros.

If you already have one: just go to the site and use your code:
Kindle Special Offer: 20% Off Laptops (****************NkDDx)

If you don't have one, you can order today and email Amazon customer service to send you the code.

See: Amazon.com: Kindle with Special Offers (****************Kzfpd)

Anyway, this is the best deal I have ever seen on a Mac, so check it out!:eek:

I don't have a kindle.
Should i buy it and then?

Kindle Special Offers is the one that is $25 less in exchange for bombarding you with ads. I guess that wasn't enough to entice many people, so they started giving out 20% coupons.

Do you think i could apply the coupon code on the order?

My guess is that you'll need to cancel the order and re-order it. Try calling Amazon, though.

Bombarding you with ads? I own a KSO and the *ONLY* ad you see is the one on the screen saver. There is NO difference in experience between the regular Kindle and the KSO when actually using it. The Ad ONLY displays when the device is turned OFF.

Let's not talk about things we have no experience with, OK?

Man, with 20% of you could buy the special offers Kindle for $114 and still be saving a hundred bucks on your Air. Not to mention no tax.

I just bought my MBA this morning from the Apple store, no tax because it is NC's tax free weekend. But I did get $50 off, the $100 iTunes gift card and a free printer for being a student.

I already have a Kindle, I kind of wish I could turn on the special offers as I find many of the default wallpapers to be kind of ugly, and if the offers are like this then it would actually be useful...

What a great deal

The month wait is a problem.

What do you think the odds are that Amazon will drag their heals with shipping this particular deal?

But Amazon is so big I don't think they would necessarily pay attention. Most likely not.

So you have to have the Kindle in your possession to get the code?

zerind
Aug 5, 2011, 09:40 AM
Yes. The codes are tied to the device. When you click the link from the Kindle it generates a code unique to the device. Anyone can use the code once issued, but only one code is generated per device and is single use.

So you have to have the Kindle in your possession to get the code?

So you have to have the Kindle in your possession to get the code?

You have to PHYSICALLY have a Kindle with Special Offers. My wife and I got her dad a Kindle with Special Offers for Father's Day. With this in mind, I called him up this morning and asked him to "help me out" :D

He got his Kindle, went into "Menu", then to Special Offers. He found the offer for 20% off and clicked on the "Email me the code" button. It sent him an email with the code in it, and he forwarded it to me.

My recommendation is to pick up the Kindle with Special Offers (KSO) in-store. You can find these at Target, Best Buy, etc. You NEED the device by Monday, and once you register the device with your Amazon account, you will find an advertisement stating "Save 20% off select computers" or something along those lines. This advertisement will show up on the bottom of your Kindle. Simply click it and follow the steps and it will email the code to you :)

I picked up my Kindle from Target today.. and if any of you have the intention to sell the Kindle afterwards... don't! Amazon has been very generous with their offers ($10 for $20 Amazon GC, 20-25% off cameras, 20-25% off HDTVs, etc). I think people were able to sell their HDTV code for hundreds on eBay. Crazy stuff!

Who knows, but I probably wouldn't recommend it. Don't know if Amazon keeps on top of returned kindle SKUs/kindles being unassociated from your Amazon account. Big picture: I just don't think it's worth taking the chance of getting your laptop order canceled prior to it get shipped out due to a kindle return (especially if the Airs are back ordered for 1-2 months).

Is there any way to convert a normal kindle into a special offers kindle? It seems that there are often quite a few good offers on that device.

No.

I know the OP already mentioned this BUT could someone who got the 20% coupon please confirm whether it applies to Laptops ONLY or could one use it for other Amazon products?

I'm looking to pick up an iMac. Got the $100GC from the Air I picked up from BB. Wife also needs a Kindle, so I'd be covering a few bases with this deal.

Thanks

That would work out to $1240, which is Amazon's price on the base 13, which is a 4GB/128GB combination.

That makes more sense.

So it's just the two base 11" (the 2/64 and 4/128) and 13" 4/128 and 4/256 models right now? There are still 2 11" 4/128 models available for immediate shipment to whomever is fastest. :)

I was going to get the i7 from the Apple store since it was a $100 more, but the amount saved on this deal just made the i7 not worth it (for me).

MBA 13" i7, 256gb (Apple store) $1,699.00
Tax 140.16
Total $1,839.16

MBA 13" i5, 256gb (Amazon) $1,275.20
Cost of Kindle $124.48
Shipping (1 day Prime) $3.99
Total $1,403.67

Dollar savings $435.49
Percent Savings 24%

Reported performance
increase of i7 vs i5 on 13" model 7%

From what I've read, the i7 is a substantial boost on the 11" model, though.

Edit: I had my numbers all nicely lined up, but I guess that doesn't translate to the post, or I just don't know how to do it. Oh well.

You must have a Kindle with Special Offers model, which is a slightly cheaper version that displays ads and special offers like this one.

If begging doesn't work, and you don't want to actually buy a Kindle, you can buy a code on eBay. Here is one example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/AMAZON-Save-20-laptop-Coupon-code-Select-Macbook-PC-/200638063131?pt=US_Coupons&hash=item2eb6f5e21b

You have until Monday to claim a code. Next day delivery from Amazon will work for the next couple of hours. Or, you can buy them at Target or Best Buy. I think there are other brick and mortar sources as well.

I won't speak to the ethics but...

Most Best Buys now have free WiFi. They also have floor models of the Kindle. If someone were to use the floor model to log on to their Amazon account, they could request the code be emailed to them.

This is a one time event. A code can only be generated one time for each device. So, only the first person to do it on that device would succeed.

The ethical downside would be if someone later purchases the floor model with the intention of getting the code, only to discover that it had already been used. It's no loss to Best Buy since the floor model will work for future deals and it's still completely functional. As for Amazon and Apple, I'm sure they have gamed out the advantages/disadvantages prior to making this offer and using a floor model doesn't change the equation.

If you are running to Best Buy or Target to get one yourself, I would advise getting one in a box. :-)

If you don't have the Kindle on hand, the difference would be around $100-150 between Amazon and BB for 13" Base model, and you don't have to wait 1-2 months. But having the Kindle for the next use, sounds temptation to me.

it's $250+ not 100-150..in most places

$1250 plus tax and you get a $100 gift card at best buy..you can't apply the gift card to this purchase afaik. Anyway, that makes it ~1360 with gift card vs $98x shipped. The cash difference is almost $400, if you want to take the gift card into account it's still almost $300 - $250 if you factor in the kindle cost and resale at a measly $70

The ads only show on the screensaver when you turn it off. No ads inside or in books.

Caveat based on the brand new KSO sitting here -- there is a banner ad at the bottom of the Home screen, as well as when it's turned off, but that's it.

OP -- THANK YOU, you just saved me a bunch of money. Compared to even the Best Buy $100-off-sale + $100 gift card deal, this is $100 less and nets me a free Kindle. (tax is about $90 of it).

(1) Kindle is actually $114, and you have a Kindle now, or you can sell it
(2) What is the BestBuy -$100 and $100 gift card? Are these educational discounts at all, which would only apply to students?
(3) Good for you that you have a tax-free weekend, not everyone does.
(4) Amazon already gives a decent discount on some models, such as about $60 off on the 11"/4GB/128GB.
(5) I think the 1-2 month shipping can be safely ignored, IMO. I ordered my MBA this week and it said 1-2 months at the time, and it arrived today.

So yes, this deal might not be the best, or at least substantially better, for you, but for many of us it is fantastic.

Your right on Amazon's shipping time frame. I had ordered a MBP from there once and it wasn't in stock. Said it would be a month. Three days later I got an email stating it was shipping the very next day. I think Apple doesn't tell Amazon when they will get them, so Amazon has to put the lead time far out in advance. If it does come in sooner, the customer won't complain. I bet I get mine within 2 weeks.

I would if I could, but the code is good once only per Kindle device and I used mine. I suspect this is the wrong thread to be posting in... ;)

Another option is there's a bunch of codes on ebay, they seem to sell for around $45 or so last I looked. So $200 to $300 savings at the cost of a $45 code seems like a no brainer.

50? More like freaking 100 dollars. That is getting very close to price of kindle itself. After you give out code, and you sell one. You almost make up for the price you paid for kindle. Kindle with ads only costs 114 dollars.

Good point -- but some would feel it is dishonest and abusing Target's generous return policies to buy it with the specific intent to use it and return it. Can't be sold as new, so someone "eats" the cost of the formerly new kindle having to be sold as openbox / used.

I'm going to either keep my Kindle or give it as a gift to someone. Probably keep it; if Amazon sends other deals as good as this (someone mentioned 25% off digital cameras, a bunch off HDTVs, etc) you might could pay for your kindle selling those codes on ebay. The Laptop 20% codes are going for $45.

okay I think I'll buy the kindle, but for 25 bucks more, you get free 3G. Do you guys think it'll keep staying free even if the new amazon tablet gets released?

also, the code expires on sept 8th but do you think it's smart to wait til sept and order then so that I can avoid 100 dollars of tax?

It seems I'll try to get my hands on a kindle special offers just to take advantage of this deal. Never thought I'd a deal like this on new Macs.

HOWEVER - IF anyone can PM me an extra code they have, I would be eternally thankful!

I thought delivery on the 11-inch MBA's were quick?? I.e. they are in stock?? But it appears yours is 3-4 weeks away at least?

I've been eyeing a MBA on Amazon for the past two weeks. They slip in and out of that shipping estimate and in stock every couple days. I'm in no rush anyways but I HIGHLY doubt it wont ship next week at the latest.

The 3G should remain free as long as you own the kindle (but no one really knows for sure).

I wouldn't wait until Sept 8th to make the purchase, as Amazon has the right to close off this deal at any time (if you read their small print). Is the tax rate ties to the account you're paying from, or is there any chance you can order the laptop sooner, and have it delivered to someone you know in a tax free state? Just a thought.

so does emailing Amazon to receive the code a confirmed method ?
I am out of the states so I won't be able to receive the kindle till I go back but since the code is only valid for the next few days, I need to order kindle now.

And is there any limits on how many codes you can use per household?
I am planning to buy 3 kindles and wondering if I will be able to get the code for all 3

I'm glad that I checked my email earlier than normal this morning. Got a notice from them, went online using the code from my new Kindle the wife bought a few days ago had included and got my new MBA with overnight shipping.

Saved a ton, no tax, plus 20% off, and free shipping. It pays to be a high volume Amazon customer. Their shipping program is fantastic. Just got the tracking number 30 minutes ago and yes indeed it's set to arrive FedEx before 10am tomorrow.

That was a nice surprise. Everyday is new day and you just never know what it will bring :)

I just asked customer service and they said 3G will be free for lifetime, and the sept 8th should hold for sure...

I was thinking about doing that too... to ship it to another state... how troublesome. Tax is charged based on the shipping address...which is mine, in NY

No go, I tried this via Chat with a CSR earlier today. Best they could do was ensure a 20% discount was taken off the order when it shipped. Felt risky to me.

You could always buy a code on ebay, there's a bunch of them out there for $45 or so.

I'm gonna buy a MacBook air soon, and this is an awesome coupon.

I'm currently trying for this with Amazon. No success so far. Have been told no by two people and that it isn't even possible. I said I read the story of someone who has done it.

Dealing with Customer Service right now. Not hopeful though. What sucks is I've purchased 4 Kindles (2 for my wife and I and 2 as gifts) all at full price. The cheaper Kindle gets the great deals.

does seem a bit counterintuitive

harpyeagle
Aug 5, 2011, 08:55 PM

#1. Kindle with NC Tax of ~7% is ~$123. They are not tax exempt here or anywhere else for that matter.
Great if you can buy it for only $114.

#2. BB has a $100 instant sale going on for the past 2 weeks - There is a
BB thread in here where this is being discussed already.

#3. BB gift card is for students, yes, but its not abnormal for them to not
check your student id. In other words, you just have to ask and keep
trying at different stores. Also, I forgot to mention the ~$50 reward
points you get when you spend $1400. I happened to be there this
evening and they are also crediting another $20 if you apply & use the
BB credit card. SO, even if you are not getting $100 gift card, you at
least get $70(or $50).

#4. I think > 20 states participate in the Tax Holiday. There are some of us
who happen to live in one of these states to make use of it(Although not
all states' tax come to $100. Average, for sure).

#5. OK, shipping time is weeks instead of buying it from a store and using it
right away AND good luck waiting another month or so in case you get a
lemon or need to exchange it for any other reason.

That being said, I am not new to Amazon and also happen to have a $50 gift card to be used up. But if I am getting a similar price elsewhere, I would rather take that and use my Amazon money for lot of other things that get discounted only at Amazon.

So yes, this may be a fantastic deal, for you and many here -no question about it. But there are equivalent or alternative deals that some of us can avail with a possibility of getting the laptop w/o waiting and the convenience of returning it to a physical store if you have to.

JSalig
Aug 5, 2011, 09:09 PM
I'd feel a lot more comfortable buying or returning a laptop to Amazon than to Best Buy. Not to mention the fact that Amazon gives you 16 extra days to return.

I would jump on this deal and not think twice about jumping through BB's hoops. Anyone with an Amazon store card can also get 24 month financing. Can't do both with BB.

Final answer to me through online chat with Customer Service was "no, not possible, sorry". I have sent an email to Kindle Customer Support about it. Seems odd that it can be extended to some and not others. Plus, as noted by techlover828, it is counterinuitive that those people who pay full price for Kindles cannot take advantage of offers given to people who spent less on their Kindles. Not that it's about who spends more, but I think people can see how that's a little backwards; spend more with us = no deals / spend less with us = great deals.

I'll see if they get back to me on this and if anything changes.

In the bigger picture, maybe in a software update for the Kindle people who paid full price will have the option to receive/see the offers and the option to turn them off. I can understand the subsidized Kindle SO having to have the offers visible but the other Kindles should be able to opt in/out as desired. IMO.

How odd. I've never had a problem.

I buy weekly from Amazon. I've experienced great consistency and saved loads of money. Between saving nearly 10% since they're tax free, then factor in free shipping and great deals like this. I've hardly used anyone else for the last six years. The secret to success for those who like discounts, but are not frequent customers is to keep a close watch on the sight.

For frequent buyers that spend over a certain amount monthly, I get regular advance email notifications on these deals. Like clock work Amazon comes through. I especially enjoy the fact that my purchases are all shipped FedEx overnight by 10am the next day. It makes it so easy. Tracking is flawless as well.

It said In Stock, ships same day if ordered by xxx time. Just like always. Amazon is very consistent. It's a promotion which is what many apparently don't understand. It's got nothing to do with how much your kindle cost, you had to meet the terms of the promotion.

Amazon is very consistent.

My experience, when compared with at least one member on this forum who, despite not having the Special Offer Kindle, has received the code from Amazon, shows that not to be the case. Perhaps you hadn't read the whole thread.

It's a promotion which is what many apparently don't understand.

I do understand it's promotion. The concept is not so advanced that I can't grasp it. I also understand though, that at least one person got in on said promotion without meeting the requirements. I simply tried to do the same. If it works, great. If not, no harm done.

It's got nothing to do with how much your kindle cost

I agree. However, I don't think it's unreasonable to see how customers who spend more money on the same device would like to get the same offers made available to them. Simple as that. As I stated before, it would be good if, in a future software update, Amazon allowed regular Kindle owners (as opposed to the Special Offer Kindle) to opt in on the ads. That would be more beneficial for Amazon too; they get more money up front for the device and then they also have people opting in for the ads. Win win for Amazon and customers.

First, thanks much to the OP! I placed my order for the base 13" tonight!

Second, I just wanted to say that I tried 3 times today to get the code through Amazon support. I was denied twice in chat and once through email. It must be very rare to get a rep who will give you the discount code.

I ended up picking up the Kindle (my fiancÚ wanted one anyway).

Amazon isn't dumb. It's all about marketing and rolling money. They made a ton of money because of this, selling Kindles. Even if a lot of poeple return them after they got a code, they still used your money. That's how corps do it and they thank you for it :)

So I have my 20% off coupon, and I just returned my Air to Best Buy, HOWEVER, I paid for my Air with cash (sold my Pro then went straight to Best Buy) so I have to wait 5-7 business days for my money, as they send it in a check. My question is, should I buy a base 13inch off Amazon now and be completely broke until next Friday or should I wait a week and buy it when I get my Best Buy money? I know the promo will still be going on, I'm just scared they might take off the 13 inch base Air, as the 11 inch base disappeared. Any suggestions?

You must have a Kindle with Special Offers model, which is a slightly cheaper version that displays ads and special offers like this one.

Can I just go into a Staples and use the code from the display Kindle?

Do you feel safe inputting your account info on it?

Well. I for one will be saving the money. The problem is. I sorta feel like I should have ordered a mbp 15 with it. Wonder if amazon will allow me to change now.

Contact Amazon, I bet they will let you, but I would talk to them before canceling your order.

I'm just sticking with the air. It was only ever meant to be a stop gap but I've now (with awesome coupon spent half of what I had originally. So if my gf wants it later she can probably have it.

does seem a bit counterintuitive

The reason the cheaper Kindle is cheaper is that it has advertising. A bunch of people just went out and bought notebook computers. I'm guessing that even with the 20% off they still made a margin, and sold some more Kindles along the way. It was only "select" notebooks.

And anyone know when this ends?

You have until 12:59PM PDT on Monday to get the coupon code from a Kindle w/Special Offers. The coupon expires on September 8. On the first page of this thread is a link to the promotion page. There are 12 Macs that quality. I think the base quad-core 15" is one of them (there's a $1799 15" MacBook Pro on there).

Bought myself an 11" MBA. Still have a spare code from my other Kindle that I'm not sure what to do with. Maybe I'll pick up another MBA as a gift. It's so cheap I can't say no.

All you need for the discount is the code.

To get a code you need to own a Kindle Special Offers version...

... or you can go to eBay and buy a code. Lots for sale last I looked.

This is a great deal!

But the apple store has a good deal too!

I got 100 student discount, 100 printer rebate and 100 iTunes gift card from my local store, so that comes out to be 1000!

Thats just about the same price as 20% off the base 13 model from Amazon.

Obviously would rather have cash than 200 in printer and iTunes money but it still is a pretty good deal.

Press menu at the home screen then go down to special offers. Make sure the kindle is linked to your amazon account.

It's still there, you just have a 1-2 month wait for stock to be replenished. It's the top one in this list:

Thanks to whoever gave the tip on Target.

I just went to my local Target store to pick up the Kindle with Special Offers. The clerk said that they have a 90 day return policy, even if you open the box.

So I took the Kindle home, registered the product, connected to Wifi, and got the code. I saved $318 off the 13-inch MBA for a total of $1275.20. Unfortunately, Amazon says it won't ship until September. Hopefully, they will get more laptops in the meantime.

Thanks again.

I just contacted Amazon, and told them I had a normal kindle, and that I'd like to convert it to a special offer kindle to get this coupon. They told me it wasn't possible, but they sent me the code anyway. This is awesome! I love Amazon! :D:D:D
I'm gonna buy a MacBook air soon, and this is an awesome coupon.

Edit: you might want to try, but I find Amazon's customer service pretty random. For example, some people got additional credits for the $40 ps3 mistake awhile ago, while others didnt.

Appreciate your post. I tried this last night and received a code this morning. Would never have thought of emailing them if it weren't for you.

I know a number of people didn't receive one but it is possible. I just don't think getting lucky and contacting a nice CSR has anything to do with it. I think it has more to do with them reviewing your history and determining if it is worth making a loyal customer happy.

I've been an Amazon customer since 2005 purchasing everything from iPods to video game consoles and also have a registered Kindle with a number of purchased books.

Talked to Amazon about the return policy of the Kindle. Specifically asked what would happen if I used the coupons and returned it. She said that was allowed as Amazon stands by their Kindle and that it will convince me to keep it.

Ordered it last night around 6pm and it is now in my hands with next day shipping. Going to play around with it for a month and see if I like it.

Other than that, so happy to save $267 :)

for MBA it says 1 to 2 months ????

Amazon just puts in those dates as a placeholder. Actual time will likely be within a week or two.
