Have a 2010 MBA with 256gb SSD and a 2011 MBA with a 128gb SSD. Swapped them and the 256gb SSD is working great in the 2011 MBA.

Is there a way to remove the 5gb recovery HD partition on the 128gb SSD that's now in my 2010 MBA? I'm going to sell it and would like to free up that space before it's sold.

Yep you need to partition the hard drive as one partition.

Tried that and the disk utility wouldn't allow it.

You need to use something other than disk utility tbh as it's a hidden partition!
