Resolved Lion 2011 MBP Install

Hi
This is going to be my first post so be gentle!

I've got a 2011 15" MBP and have started installing lion from a DVD. I left the mac going through the installation process i.e. downloading files, this will take x minutes. and have returned to find the mac with a light grey screen, a stop/halt/ban symbol in the middle and the mac equivalent of an egg timer spinning round. Its been like this for a while.

Any help/thoughts?

Sounds as though the DVD you created is not 100%. What speed did you burn it at? Do you have access to another Mac that you can redo it on? Alternatively, I created a bootable USB drive and installed it from that and it was pretty quick.

I burned it at 4x. I will have to put snow leopard back on and have another attempt. Will put it on a USB drive this time

Ok thanks for the tip. Leopard is being installed as I speak. I might try to download lion again as I did have an pause during the original download

Hi it's me again. I've downloaded lion again and checked the md5 against the golden master and it's correct. It went onto a USB and I have gone through the same process to install it. However the problem has occurred again. The only thing I can think of is that ive got the hard disk encrypted. Any ideas? The system still just displays the stop sign and the little time loading circle
 
When you say you encrypted the drive. at which point did you encrypt it? You may find that the Lion installer can't access the drive in its current state. I would boot into the installer and use the Disk Utility to erase your current partition and create a new one and then try again.
 
Make sure you have connection to internet. The installer download some additional stuff (if needed). Otherwise you are always left with a spinning mouse pointer at reboot.
 
I know its a bit of a no brainer but i really wouldn't use the GM version on your MacBook Pro, i have the same model and i had LOADS of issues with graphics and stuff from the get go. Doing a fresh install with the version from the App Store is what i would recommend.

Not sure if you were ever planning to purchase it, either way the version you need is out there somewhere... Its only $30 on the app store thought and id pay $30 to make sure i didn't have to do multiple reinstalls :)

Like you, I checked md5s etc.. and all was OK, but the InstallESD.dmg just didn't boot correctly once burned to media (USB or DVD).

I was having exactly the same issues as you, and using this method meant I could boot and clean install from a USB stick.

Yes I did purchase it from the app store and downloaded a fresh version - on go live day and then yesterday. I ran an MD5 checksum on the downloaded lion installer and this matched the MD5 provided by apple for their golden master images - taken from the apple discussion boards.

You might be right! OK, here's what happened next.

I started over, put the installer onto a USB. This was booted and installed on a non encrypted partition. The installer completed without issue - and hey presto, a lovely lion was born!

Then I set the encryption process going in lion. This took about 6 hours and once completed, everything was cool!

But I've just realised something.......maybe the halt/stop symbol during installation wasn't a failure?! maybe it was the partition being encrypted, and as there was no feedback (words on a screen) I didn't know this was actually going on?! maybe if I had waited 6 hours, it would have continued the installation with an encrypted partition? who knows?

You are probably right jez, it probably couldn't gain access to the drive once it was encrypted, as it went through another reboot. Anyway, thanks for the help. I will post some further findings as soon as I can!
 
You're welcome mate, glad you get there in the end and some good learning tips for anyone who reads this thread about the potential effects of encryption on an install disk.
