An 11am PST Media event (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/04/20050416180835.shtml) from Apple is expected to bring software announcements today at the National Association of Broadcasters.

Coverage for the event is limited. At present there appear to be two sources for the event.

http://acme.blogs.com/apple/ (French)

Apple's booths at NAB are reportedly covered with black sheets as well as covered banners.

We will continue to update this story to reflect the latest information.

I think this'll be the event for the new Powermacs to debut, dual-core an' all. Apple is so classy, "black sheets and banners."

So do the black sheets look like they're covering powerbook sized objects or powermac sized objects?

Thank god! No new Powermacs announced. That means we will see something big announced in June, instead of those sorry specs that Think Secret predicted.

paulypants
Apr 17, 2005, 03:43 PM
Well I think that TS specs on the new PowerMac GPUs is not correct after these pro app updates. From Apple's site:

Motion requires the standard graphics card in any Power Mac G5 or iMac G5, a 1.25GHz or faster PowerBook G4, or a 1.25GHz or faster flat panel iMac. One of the following graphics cards is highly recommended: NVIDIA GeForce FX 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL (NV40), ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (RV M11), ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (R350), or 9800 XT (R360).

9600 doesn't appear to be highly recommended, why would you release new pro software and then subsequently release new pro hardware thats specs aren't highly recommended? Now if the hardware was updated BEFORE the software I might understand, but after? hmmmm...

But, this is apple afterall...

edit: also under requirements:

AGP Quartz Extreme Graphics card -- ugh

Replication of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored DVDs requires a DLT drive

"Playback of HD DVDs authored in DVD Studio Pro 4 requires a PowerPC G5 processor, Mac OS X v10.4 and Apple DVD Player 4.6 (or later) "

Can you playback HD DVD's in a regular dvdplayer or does this mean we can expect new optical drives in upcoming hardware updates? Or better: BluRay burners :D

mduser63
Apr 17, 2005, 03:56 PM
I think the fact that DVD Studio Pro now supports HD DVD authoring indicates that will be seeing Blu-ray and/or HD-DVD (more likely Blu-ray) drives in Macs soon. I assume that for now you have to have a DLT drive to run off a master for a HD DVD, but Apple will want to provide an easy way to burn your own quickly.

All in all, the upgrades are nice incremental upgrades, but I don't feel bad that I bought the Production Suite 2 weeks ago. Also, did anyone else notice that the regular price hasn't changed, but the educational price has gone up by $200 to $699 from $499? I wonder why they did that.

Well I can no longer wait. I will be buying my new PM G5 this Wednesday. So unless something gets announced in the next 72 hours, I have reached my breaking point for my freelance buisness. I have goals to meet by mid-June and am pushing it as it is.

No matter what happens, I am very excited to be getting a new PM G5. It will be my first Apple tower computer!
