Quite an amazing story. Will be interesting to hear how this actually happened. All the instruments in the operating room are supposed to be insulated. Sounds as though is isn't a case of human spontaneous combustion.

I'm interested to hear the reasons for this too...
Having been able to scrub on a few cases just now, the thought of combustible fluids did come to mind...but who uses alcohol? on an open heart case?

At least they leave the argon gas pulsifierthingamajiggy to the transplant team...

Is it possible one of those cutting lasers hit alcohol causing a spark and the fire?

This is coming from bits of tv shows, sidenote, this would make a good myth busters episode for sure..

An electric cauterizer? The heat those things use to cut might have done it.

Has anyone else ever read Dave Barry's column(s)- I'm sure he has several- on people catching fire during surgery?
It's very entertaining (as is the vast majority of his work), and the title of this post just made me think of that...
