You can see the MacBook Pro I own in my signature. It's an early 2008 2.5 Ghz T9300 Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Ram, 250 GB, GeForce 8600M.

How much better would the $1299 MacBook Air be than my current MBP?

Graphics would be a step back, but everything else would be significantly faster on the new MacBook Air. Think of the 1.7GHz Core i5 as like a 3.5-4.0GHz Core 2 Duo, and the SSD as a super fast hard drive.

Thanks. I just want a speedier machine overall. I'm not too concerned about graphics. But, I'm not too familiar with the Intel 3000 Graphics. How much of a step back would it be?

Not that much, check this review of the MacBook Air, it will help you to decide if you prefer the Pro or the Air..

If you aren't a gamer you have no need for a dedicated GPU.

I switched from a similar machine - this one is twice as fast at everything but gaming.. effectively

Gaming is pretty much a wash for most things. now, when I say twice as fast.. that's crunching calculations.. it FEELS 3-4x faster imo due to the ssd.

Graphics would be a step back...

Really? Compared to the OP's configuration? If I read Anandtech's performance numbers correctly, its actually quite a step UP...
