View Full Version : New PowerBook Coming!!!!!

sjestus
Jan 7, 2002, 03:12 PM
My Band Director told me today that he ordered 10 NEW 1GHz G4 Powerbooks a week ago. It has not been publicly announced but we ordered them and were getting them in about a month or so. I'm going to have one for myself also because I'm the big Mac guy on campus. He also has 20 other 500MHz Powerbooks that we ordered a few months back and we have 4 G4 towers. So be ready for something AWESOME coming out pretty soon!

How can there be an 1GHz PowerBook and only an 867MHz PowerMac?

sjestus
Jan 7, 2002, 03:20 PM
He ordered them, he even showed me the receipt for them. It's somewhere around 20 Grand. But the fact is that Apple is coming out with them.

Well of course its coming out SOMEDAY. Hell, why dont we predict that a G6 is coming out in 3 years while we are at it?? I was saying ******** to the fact that your MUSIC teacher ordered them.

Band nerds. "Im the big mac man on campus..." So, is that before or after a football player stuffs you and your powerbook into a locker?

You are what gives Apple users bad names. I mean, ****-why the hell would a school band order 30 powerbooks for? Jesus. Just hurry up play your instruments so we can start the second half.

Man, Im starting to sound like Spikey. See what happens when JefHatfield leaves?

stirring the pot I see...

I do agree though, what does a school band need a PowerBook for anyway? I would imagine an iBook would be more suitable....but still, why does a school band need a bunch of laptop computers? I am curious to know...

To agreenster:

Me a Band nerd, no way! I'm not that good at what I play in the Band. I wouldn't get stuffed in a locker to. I'm one of the most popular kids in school. And if someone does mess with me, they know what's gonna happen. And we ordered the powerbooks so we could do research on Composers and such over an Airport network, and my director likes the PowerBook more along with me. I'm not the one giving Apple a bad name, YOU ARE!. I'd like to see you own over 30 different types of Apple computers at the age of 15. I've owned Apple branded stuff since I was 3. My first Apple was the IIGS. The reason I'm the Apple Man on Campus is because I AM the Apple Man on Campus. I'm the only one who could afford a Mac other than the Band.

Oh yeah... I'm also gonna be the only one on this and every forum using a 1GHz Powerbook except for the people in my band and at Apple computer.

You are the one giving apple a bad name.

Ha ha.

I was programming on the Apple ][ before you were born, squirt. Oh, and you havent owned over 30 types of Apple computers. Lying about that doenst make everything else you say any more believable. And dont forget, you arent the only one here who has been using an Apple since they were children.

Plus, you dont need 30 computers to do research for composers. What a waste of state money. Thats called books and a library. No, Im not giving Apple a bad name, they have just now started doing that for themselves.

Anyway--Im out of here for today- tired of arguing with 15 year old Band Geeks.

To Mr agreenster (whatever), I have been enjoying your posts over the last few days and respecting them.

And there is no need for you to lower yourself into a "My HARD drive is bigger than yours" contest.

REALLY, if my mother were alive today....

And so forth.

Anyhow as I've posted elsewhere agreenster in particular... do you not think that speed-bumped towers, we know that Apple doesn't have a new case for them yet (and thus it isn't quite big enough for a keynote when you have the extraordinary iMac to compete with)... could be announced tomorrow by Phil S?

during the "POWER" hint hint "of X"?

Also did you notice that in the final power point slide of the keynote the PowerTowers were conspicuously absent.

That either means more to come (soon) or they're not in the future product line and the latter would be ridiculous.

Good night

IN BAND = NERD... I don't care if you can play or not.

Um, and if that didn't qualify you... bragging about being "APPLE MAN ON CAMPUS" makes you a nerd. Or geek if you prefer.

Unless of course the girls in your high school prefer the guy that brags about how much ram he has in his laptop over the QB of the football team.

At my high school the "APPLE MAN ON CAMPUS" played 'dungeons and dragons' and 'MAGIC' with the "WINTEL MAN ON CAMPUS" and the "CHESS MAN ON CAMPUS".

I'm not trying to be mean, but... no one cares how many Macs you have used. I've used one. YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME???

10 1GHz Powerbooks = around $22,000. Plus we have the education price drop that's about 200 dollars a computer. There will be 1GHz Powerbooks, I'm not lying, neither is my director. My band director won't let me scan the reciept but when I get the PB I'll post a picture of the Computer Manager thing that says how fast it is if we get them before they're announced publicly.

He said in his original post that the BD was ordering 10 PB's and that in this boy's young life he'd "owned" 30+ macs.

Details, details, details.

WhyAmIPostingToThis?
Jan 7, 2002, 11:28 PM
OK... here goes...

"GUEST'S" 15 COMPLAINTS ABOUT HIS STORIES!

1. He won't let you scan the receipt. Strange how things always work out that way when someone doesn't believe you.

2. Where did you buy these again? Receipts for an inside transaction with detail like you would see on a normal, actually REAL receipt?

3. 10 PowerBooks for a marching band to do research, huh? What is that, 5 or 6 to a computer? And when you reply back saying and some people will use textbooks, there are computers in the library. What kind of idiot buys expensive, new, not even in production computers that will have limited use.

4. Your buddy the director giving you that free TiBook? Riiight...

5. Can't forget the cost of Base Stations and all those cards!

6. $2000 for a brand new 1 Ghz TiBook? I have a 450 Mhz one, and it sure does seem strange to up the speed that much in a time period of less than one year!

7. You spend too much time with your band director. Gross.

8. I would like it if you posted the email of your band director... oh wait... it probably redirects to you... nevermind.

9. Ooh... the big Mac Guy on campus... that just sounds gay. Stop.

10. One of the most popular kids in school gives people crap like this? I don't think so!

11. Haha... gotcha cornered with this one... if your director's not giving you the Ti, are you just as popular with the Apple guys as he is? And C'MON, LET'S SEE YOUR DAMN RECEIPT!!! (Wait... just like everything else, it'll be fake.)

12. Don't put up any Photoshopped (yes, I know you just happen to have this for X before it's out too!) screenshots of the speed. If you do, you'll probably spell something wrong.

13. When has a PowerBook, or any computer for that matter, been ready for shipping in a month when it hasn't even been announced?!?

14. Yes... still going strong! Anyway, you're still a band geek.

And now... you are so screwed...

15. Between 8:39 and 9:58 PM (yes, these are the server's times) you happened to see the band director and ask him if you can borrow the receipt? Is he your dad? Or just one of those weird growths coming out of your body? No, wait... you IM'd him... he's on your contact list too! Cool! Just shut up and NO ONE CLOSE THIS DISCUSSION PLEASE! I want to see how long it goes on.

And last, please don't "dude" anyone. You're a friggin' band geek. You know it. Everyone else in this forum knows it. Hell, even your good buddy Stevie Jobs knows it!

(BTW, I'm downloading iPhoto right now. The apple.com/iphoto location is down... get it from your iDisk... freakin' fast!)

Maybe its just because we area all (in some way or another) frustrated about MWSF, or maybe it because we all have the burning inner desire to make fun of band-nerds, but regardless, we have picked this poor kid to death. I know, I know, I started it. I didnt think it would escalate to this point! Anyway, I wish some of my more thoughtful and interesting posts would get this kind of feedback, but apparently, I have to get really rude with someone before people start paying attention. Oh well.

Anyway, sorry to those of you who lost faith in me as a polite, insightful poster. I normally am, but I think i was just rubbed the wrong way. Not only had I actually wanted a 1gHz Powerbook, and had it denied me at MWSF, but then I had to endure reading a post by a misinformed pre-teen who was wrongfully bragging about the 1gHz TiBook he had his band director order for him, and the rest of the marching pride. I suspect you just heard your director wrong, and ordered 550mHz TiBooks, with 1gig of ram a piece.

I know you'll deny this until the day you forge some kind of proof, and thats okay. Thats what we all did when we were 15. We said things we didnt mean to say, and knew were wrong, but did everything we could to prove we were right.

Anyway, Ill try not to flame anyone again. Well, not anytime too soon anyway.

PS: Maybe one of the posts above is correct, there's always tomorrow, and maybe they wanted to save today to just relish in the iMac. G5's tomorrow? Well, here's to hopin'

Hell, I'm not far off, going on 18 here soon enough. I vividly remember that age and my spelling abilities have only worsened since, bare with me...

At the age of 15 i heard from a friend that he got his modem(dialup) to download mp3's and only mp3's at like 3 megabyte/sec(like over 20Mbps connection). I believed it whole heartedly and told people about it. upon discovering that my friend was mistaken, i would not go tell people i told that i was wrong. but when asked about it, continue to play it as truth as not to sound like a moron/idiot and loose whatever fragile quantity of "coolness" I'd managed to scrounge up by then.

Now, I wasn't even in band, but at that age nowadays in high school, it can be rough, especially for the only guy in school to "think" he knows something about computers and who carries such close relations with his band instructor.

Here's the deal, you wanna be cool? wanna get out of this mess you've created for yourself? admit it's a gig of ram, and get on with your life, even if there will be 1GHZ TiBooks anounced in the next few days, your band teacher did not place an order for it, it didn't happen.

An interesting little note... The TiBook top end model was shipping standard with a gig of ram as of a few days ago when i was looking at apple's site, i dunno if it's still like that, but it probably was the same gig of ram that the band purchased with all those powerbooks.

-Okay, you've seen it! I was prolly qualified to make a similar statement when I was 15, but I live 8 miles from Cupertino, and am neighbors with two Apple engineers, who'd cast off their old machines on me. I'm also not counting Apple stickers as 'Apple branded stuff'. Having by now owned about 80 Macs, some IIs, a Newton, and a Quicktake (PoS) here's the line that ends puts the last nail in the credibility coffin:

Band Nerd>I'll post a picture of the Computer Manager
Band Nerd>thing that says how fast it is if we get them
Band Nerd>before they're announced publicly.

Anybody who's owned more than 1 Apple wanna tell me where the Computer Manager thing is? Sounds like it is in a WinBlows box!

On a Mac, it's called Apple System Profiler, if you haven't heard of it, drive to a store, check out a Macintosh, you might like them. They're neat-o!

Band Nerd>I'm not lying

He's lying!

Band Nerd, there are people here who have a serious need to gloat that their dreams came true today, or cry that they didn't. Propagating what are blatantly false rumors is adding fuel to the fire. Look, geeks are so cool... Haven't you seen "Revenge of the Nerds"?? They're smarter, have faster Powerbooks than anyone in the known universe, and have bigger... well, tech specs...

Hey, I was programming at age 8 on the first version of MS BASIC on a 512k Mac in 1985... I WAS the BIG APPLE MAN on campus... (of course I got beaten up constantly for it...)

Now, I'm married to a beautiful Japanese stewardess, and am being paid to study on a $250,000+ scholarship... (okay, so I'm bragging now), so it shows, there is light at the end of the tunnel for us.

Guys, have some more understanding... The kid is obviously suffering from a severe case of acute temporal distortion or something... It happened to me the other day, and I saw myself with a 500 Terahertz wrist mount Macintosh PowerWatch G39 with self-expanding 29-inch holographic cinema display and preinstalled 200gbps wireless telepathic networking node and all... bloody fabulous stuff!!

But seriously...
It is obvious that Apple have something big under wraps that going to be big, and released VERY soon...
They have to... the current Power Mac line is DEAD - why pay twice as much when an iMac almost surpasses it in speed... doesn't make sense.

But how long until the Apollo G4 is officially announced? And when will it come in PB form??
I was going to buy a TiBook this week... but with Apple's latest marketing strategies... announcing new revised faster PowerBooks out of the blue... etc. who knows when!?

I can only lust over the iMac for now, and debate over whether or not a TiBook is a prudent purchase at this point...

Goddamn Apple... give us the goods!!
But blasphemy aside, we all have a lasting love affair with Apple, whether it involves band camp and sexual deviancy or not and just can't wait until the next BIG thing comes out... let's hope it's soon....

This thread is so pathetic I don't know why I'm bothering, but....

I come from a small town (about 13,000 people) in the suburbs of NYC. My high school had 576 students my senior year —*who knows why I remember that, but I do —*and over 200 of us were in band, orchestra, choir, and/or chorus. Football players didn’t stuff the bandies into lockers; a lot of them actually joined the band, cuz it was just the thing to do. (And no, the team didn’t suck. They were state champs, my frosh year.)

Think about it —*the football players spend four years getting pummeled (on the field) by guys from another school. In my four years in band, I got a free pass to all the football games (without getting pummeled), plus four awesome trips:
• Williamsburg, VA (including Busch Gardens!)
• Annapolis and Baltimore, MD (including King's Dominion)
• Québec City (don't remember any theme parks, but it was still cool!)
• a seven-day cruise to Grand Bahama Island, including a day at the Blue Lagoon (’nuff said).

I also got to play Giants Stadium twice! — and all this because I could bang a drum (and play keyboards in the jazz band, but I digress). Sounds like a deal to me!

(Of course, this still doesn’t mean he’s right about the PowerBooks —*especially for only $20G!)

I asked my band director again today if were getting 1GHz PBs and he said yes. But he did say that we won't be getting them for a month or so. And no I don't IM him, I don't even talk to him much. The only time I see him is if he's telling me to hook a piece of equipment up or fix something. And during band class. He just knows I know the most about macs in the band and probably the school. I meant by being the "mac man on campus" was being only person to my knowledge that uses macs except for the band. What I meant by having over 30 macs was that a bunch of schools gave me and my brother a TON of macs that they don't use because of where my brother works. My brother actually got the IIGS first and put a $1000 worth of RAM in it which is like 1MB back then. And I started too use it when I was around two until my brother got a newer computer when I was 3. And the director isn't "giving" me a PB he's letting me borrow it through the rest of my 3 years at school. And I have two keep the Airport network running in good shape too so I can borrow the PB. I also have to run all the equipment during concerts. I also get out of classes so I can work on a computer or something that is a lot easier than my english class. I thank the people who are supporting the band nerd thing. I really don't care if you call me that. I guess that comes with being in band.

And one of the main reasons that y'all don't want to believe is because Apple came out with the new iMac when you people were thinking stuff that isn't even possible yet for under $4,000 computers, like 2GHz G5s and such. Maybe pretty soon they'll come out the G5 but I guess it doesn't really matter because you people will bash that also because you'll say "it should've come out last January." And I know for a fact that will happen because you people bash every good thing that comes out of apple like the iPod, iPhoto, the new iMac, 14' iBooks, 12' iBooks, and everything else that Apple has released I've seen people on this site bash. Why don't you go by a new 2.2GHz P4 that will meet your need of so called "the power that you want that Apple never gives crap." I can see even if the new G5 comes out you guys will be crying because it wasn't as fast as the rumor sites said it would be. I'm sorry for getting mad but you guys bash good things way to much. I'm just trying to get some good true info out to make you guys hopefull about the future. But you guys will even bash that. You guys are the real losers not me.

sjestus
Jan 8, 2002, 05:14 PM
He ain't smokin nothing. He told me that he ordered new powerbooks and I asked him if they were the 667s and he said "no way buddy, there the 1GHz". And I said NO WAY, you joking right? And he said they just ordered them and Apple hasn't announced them publicly yet. I'm thinking that they got to get the 1GHz because of all the Apple stuff he's ordered in 5 months. I mean he's ordered at lease 50 powerbooks, and 10 G4 towers. Some schools that order like 10,000 iBooks or something probably got the chance to order them the 1GHz model also.

I think your teacher is meaning 1 GB instead of 1 Ghz. Simply Apple wouldn't release a product to one school, when the product hasn't even been released to the public. Apple would have to come out with a statement saying the new Ti Book is out. Using this just so you can get attention is sort of annoying. One more thing, I haven't heard of a worse use of tax money, I am not putting down macs but why not just use the library? It seems the Library would be a cheaper way to go. All I need to ask now (if they can do this) is can I have that $25,000 for making a Giant tesla coil for science?

Ask your band director for the order number, post it here and we can then all look online at the order status, which will have the computer specs. If he ordered it from apple, it has an order number.

First off, Kela: ****! You are now the most immature ass on this board after that post.

Secondly I think we can all agree that is one of the following scenarios:

1. The band director ordered powerbooks with 1GB of RAM and is misstaken. (Most likely)

2. The Band director pre-ordered from a retailer with some inside info who was willing to give it up so as not to lose the big order. (Not Likely)

3. A bunch of people are left here on the boards looking for something to fight about after the inevitable letdown of another MW. (definitely)

i think the band 'dude' teacher guy is making it up and telling the poor 15 year old that he is getting these new kick ass powerbooks. sure why not? obviously being a band student, you would look up to the teacher who has all this musical talent and not to mention the spending power to buy loads of apple computers. i believe the band teacher was just trying to get soem ass from the 15 year old. sick i know... but hey.. you never know with those band types eh? just kidding, but seriously... i wouldnt blame the kid. i would bet the teacher is lying to make himself look like he is some kind of god with much clout at apple. did any of that make sense? =)

Maybe that is sjestus' strategy--by the time the 1gHz Powerbooks DO start shipping (next year), this post will still be stringing along and he can say "I told you so."

Im glad everyone agrees with my philosophy on 15 year olds and their lying practices. The reason it rings true with everyone, is because nearly everyone did it when they were young. Its just a way for young people to look important, and feel like they know something. Its a part of growing up. i didn't become cynical and more realistic until the working world in my 30s when i found out, "reality bites" style, that empolyers, employees, and clients could care less if you went to college or dropped out in 4th grade as long as they get the best deal, price, etc...

in high tech, since my customers and clients don't know computers, they hire me and all they care about is if the thing works and they don't want to be bothered by what they consider a necessary evil or waste of time

the cynical view towards the internet these days is what is really sad since the internet still has a lot of potential which i don't think will get realized

these forums are really a good way to learn about the mac

sjestus- Do you live in Maine by any chance?

Anyways, concerning band nerds:
Yes, there are hardcore band nerds, and No, not everyone in band is a band nerd. I am the 16 year old son and grandson of band directors, and I don't consider myself a band nerd. I am good at my instrument, but I don't live in the band hall, and I don't practice every day! Also, my dad doesn't teach at the school I go to.

At my school, band is just another thing. The football team sucks, but football isn't everything at school. There are plenty of other organizations at my school, and Band is one of the bigger, more recognized ones. Band is fun, contrary to popular belief. they go to every football game, they go on cool trips, and we get out of school sometimes.

A note about my band directors: The head director is really old, and needs to retire. he has a dell. 4 of them have G3 powerbooks. They are all pretty much avid mac people. I talk to a couple of them about it, and they're cool. I don't go to their houses or constantly talk with them. One of them is really weird, but he likes to keep up with the rumors and stuff. My band directors also do other, uhm... things with their computers (not porn!) I do know, however, that band directors perfer Macs over PC's any day. At an event called TBA (Texas Bandmasters Association- it's the band equivilant of MacWorld.) all of the major music notation companies (Sibelius, Finale, igor, etc...) use Macs. There are tons of macs everywhere, because band has evolved past the stone age, so there are uses for computers with music, and Macs are best for it.

The MUSIC building (band, choir, and orchestra) has a dual processor 500mhz G4. Why? I have no idea. All that they ever do with it is make spreadsheets and go online. I know that my band would never buy computers for the whole class. Now, if there was a music theory class, that may be a different thing.

As for being the Mac Guy, I think I might be, but not as openly as you may think. I am taking a class for A+ certification, and I am the only mac user in there. I do get out of class sometimes to fix computers. I seem to be more of a computer nerd at my school, but there are a lot of people like that at my school, so I'm not alone. My friends make jokes about Macs and stuff, but they're just jokes. I am one of the few students who've ever brought a computer to school. The most known guy was a psycho weirdo mac hater. He carried a full sized tower in a duffel bag! I carry my spiffy 600mhz iBook with its combo drive with me. Some days, I leave it at home. It's no big deal, people know that i prefer Macs over PC's, and that's that.

Now, for that 1ghz powerbook, If you're from Maine, i might, just maybe believe you. Now, do you think that Apple would release or even sell new hardware to a band director before it became publicly available? Come on, give us a break. It would be nice if it was available, and I won't say it doesn't exist altogether, but until there is reliable proof, I don't believe that your band director ordered them.

Sorry if this post is long and uncomprehensible (un-understandable) at points, but i just wanted to make some points. so to sum it all up- There is nothing wrong with band, band directors can be cool or weird and sometimes both, I like macs, but don't make that big of a deal of it, and Apple may have 1 ghz powerbooks, but I won't believe you, sjestus,
because you seems to be faking it, and band directors lives aren't that interesting.

Hooray for my first post :-)

Don't count on PB's having anything more than 800Mhz. Heat, folks......Heat kills. PB's will always be one step behind the Towers because of heat. I could see duals if space was the only constraint, but heat dumping limits that down.

Yeah, hotter than a Miama beach chick in a g-string. I swear I could fry eggs on my powerbook.

Just a guess, though, but from what I can remember, Apollo is a smaller, lower power consuming, cooler, yet faster G4. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Hooray for my second post!

i will cut ou before 500 or 1000 this time depending on what the others are doing...if there a half a dozen people over 1000, then i won't mind as long as i don't come up in first place of the blabber mouths

on the heat issue with powerbook, yes, the powerbook is hot compared to ibook in plastic case, but if you want heat issues, look back to the most prolific mobile processor of the 90s, the AMD K6-2, which ran so hot is actually slowed the laptop down to a crawl after just one hour due to hear issues (i have one of those mass produced compaq's which has the k6-2...on the pc desktop side, remember the 486?)

Jan 9, 2002, 01:43 PM
Sorry, but I typed before I thought. You know how Apple made that big deal with Maine, well maybe they let them in on some new stuff, you know. It's a far-fetched idea, but he most likely doesn't live in Maine.

Cupertino is more believable, though.

Maybe his band director orded some cheap ripoff's of the G4 (wibook makes em) that have 1Ghz PIII's. If so, i would laugh so hard!

mischief
Jan 9, 2002, 01:44 PM
Apple always does the towers first. Moving the PB's up in speed and processor gen ahead of the towers wouldn't make sense. Apollo may already be in the iMac anyway. It's the first thing I can think of that'd need less heat/power consumption. Either way it's more likely to see the towers get a "minor" speed bump first to keep the PB's from looking superior.

Similarly I need a decent side angle shot of the new (I still think it's rather wild/wicked) iMac itself, preferably with a shadowed movement of the screen, if anyone's seen one.

All the ones I've found are too low-res to use, there must be some press pics available directly from the Apple site or SOMEWHERE!

Hey pal, we are just joking around. Plus, your teeny bit of a response isnt ANYthing that someone else hasn't already said. If you stick around MacRumors long enough, you will find out that a lot of intelligent people post often. The problem is, many of us sometimes wish to stir the pot and flame on occasion.

We also usually follow-up by posting something insightful, and intelligent. Its just a way to keep the forums from becoming completely boring. If you notice, this is one of the longer threads of the forum, and has little to do with Mac. Ever stop and wonder why that is? We dont ALWAYS talk about Apple. There's gotta be room for beer, football, and making fun of band-geeks SOMEwhere! Ha ha.

Seriously though, Ive never gotten so many emails from people talking about their 'lying' 15 year-old days when they tried to impress people by making up stuff they knew wasnt true, but sounded really cool. We actually touched on something that slightly resembled psychological study in this post. (notice I said 'touched on' and 'slightly') I think its okay to divert from Apple once in a while. We're human, you know?

Anyway, stick around and you may find that the people you are calling immature now, may be the same ones you highly respect later.

Hey anyone want to see the dreadful (text, I didn't write) spread I've just done on the new iMac and MP3s (for british civil servants, you've got to keep it clean)?

It's hardly time but oddly enough it seems a little less OTT.

if u must....but I think there's been enough discussion with the new iMac this week to write a book....

does it involve band nerds & mythical computer systems?

Sorry about the trombone joke, if it offended you. I just thought it was funny, because my Grandpa, Dad, and older brother all play the trombone. I play the trumpet, so there goes my ego.

Oh ,I have another cheap band joke, but I'll twist it around:
Q: What should you do if you're a stone's throw away from a PC, Bill Gates, or Steve Ballmer?

A: Throw Stones!

The most dangerous part of this thread is it's contact high. I want an iBoing for my back window.

What the ???? miss chiff does 'contact high' mean. I though your were north of the great divide? That's wandering into Bushisms

Contextual: To display the behavior patterns of an individual under the influence of Cannabis Indica after interacting with such persons or material depicting such intoxication.

'f course.

My mind is being alterered by the fact I'm now laying out a spread about the Scottish Procurator's Fiscal Office (and don't me to explain what that is, 'cos I haven't got the slightest idea)

Sit back, have a beer and maybe if we all chill for a week or two we won't be so reactionary if Apple DOES do a new TiBook.
