Can I do a clean install of Lion on a new hard drive?

I have a late '08 Macbook aluminum unibody with Snow Leopard installed. I want to upgrade my HDD, which is only 250 GB, and the OS to Lion.

What would be the process to clean install on an entirely new HDD? Correct me if I'm wrong...

1. Download Lion from the app store and make a bootable USB or DVD.
2. Install new HDD and boot from the USB or DVD by holding down the option key

Anybody successful with this? I don't see any reason why I'd have to install Snow Leopard first.

I thought there was a sequence during the installation where you select the drive and partition it. No?
