At last, someone else here wakes up ... I was beginning to wonder why so many people keep telling "them" everything about themselves.

I even posted a poll like this a while ago, just to see how eager everybody is to anwser all these questions.

If you're keen on questions, Scientology has some very entertaining surveys lying around ;)

Next up: A poll asking you to post you're entire genetic sequence.

mucho fun .... :D

Then there's the cheap bastards like me who have to put 256, because 128 and 192 runs just fine.

That's the dumbest poll I've ever seen in my life. Not only do I not care about others responses, they didn't even pick logical responses to make available. Outside of graphic artists and people who put in tons of memory into their computer for bragging rights, no one needs or has that much memory. What would be much more useful information to the computer industry would be to offer choices such as 32 Megs, 64 Megs, 128 Megs, 256 Megs, 384 Megs, and >384 Megs. Then the computer industry could see that not all of us have quad processor 3Ghz machines and the OS would require a much more resonable amount of disk space, processor intensity, memory and graphic capabilities.

My Rev. B 667 TiBook has 512MB of RAM...a bump up from my Rev. A 500 w/384MB...and I've found quite a few instances where an increase would have helped out...

On my workstation...G4 400 AGP w/832MB. Granted 832MB seems extreme...but damn it's increased system performance (it actually outperformed my Ti)...it comes in very handy in a production environment where I can literally have every application at my disposal on the fly... ;)

Now there are many people who have killer systems and do not do much with them set aside from surfing the internet & burning cd's...but for the majority of us users who find it necessary to go full-throttle for work related purposes don't do it for bragging rights...

I think the choices are quite logical, only i think instead of the bottom being 256mb it should be 128 which is the lowest amount currently found in basemodel ibooks and imacs. And the least needed for OS X

Outside of graphic artists and people who put in tons of memory into their computer for bragging rights, no one needs or has that much memory.

Though i am a graphic/web designer. I disagree. OS X needs at the very least 128mb, but really should have 256mb. Plus its been said over and over that OS X is ram hungry and it will use as much as you give it.

What would be much more useful information to the computer industry would be to offer choices such as 32 Megs, 64 Megs, 128 Megs, 256 Megs, 384 Megs, and >384 Megs.

Umm actually that poll would be far less accurate with your suggestions, considering that as indicated by the polL more then 60% of the people who replied indicated they have 512mb or more. If you actually READ the poll before shooting off at the mouth you'd see that you're in the odd minority. Not to mention that i hardly think the "computer industry" is interested in and using a macrumors poll as a guideline for new hardware/software...

Then the computer industry could see that not all of us have quad processor 3Ghz machines...

or any of us....

...and the OS would require a much more resonable amount of disk space, processor intensity, memory and graphic capabilities.

Which it does based on current hardware offerings. Sorry but upgrading your computer is a fact of life.

Come on now you can't hold back OS innovations because a people refuse to upgrade and want to run it on their old 8500's...
Apple as we know it wouldnt exist with that attitude...

This is kind of crazy. You've asked me to indicate the closest value. I have 374 MB of RAM. The 2 closest values, from which you give me to choose, are 256 MB and 512 MB. One's 128 MB less than what I have, and the other is 128 MB MORE than what I have! Which do I choose?!!?

Ya know, i didn;t even notice that till you posted. How did they leave out 384, i know quite a few people with 384 in there machines.

Results are skewed, we demand a re vote....lol....

If you're midway, round up.

The Cube I use has 1GB of happy memory right now. I'm not sure if the computer has even used 600MB+ at once. :D

Re: Stupid Poll

For word processing apps, some basic drawing, maybe some Photoshop work and a little music, 128MB really isn't close to enough, with OS X and OS 9 running. My iBook 467MHz w/128MB is old-dog slow and takes up to 10 bounces to open certain apps.

u vote...and if your choice doesn't match what u voted...list it...

You're right. It said to choose the closest value. Since there were 2 that were identical. There was no "closest" value.

A poll can't be accurate unless its values are accurate.

No gripe. Just confusion.:D

I have 1.5GB RAM for three reasons:

1. It was cheap ---- $180 total cost to go from 512 to 1.5GB
2. It makes OS X smoke on my MP Mac. Unix loves memory
3. I LOVE TO BRAG TO MY FRIENDS!

I don't really brag to my friends, as most of them have no clue what a gig vs mb is. I do however like to brag to the wintel guys that I know that can only go to 768MB, although I understand the newer machines will do 2.0G.

If you could just swap the memory and clockspeed, you would have a 1.25Ghz G4 with 450MB of RAM.

Wouldn't that be nice.

Sorry for the gravedigging of threads here... but I was browsing the poll archives and noticed how interesting this poll is and it would be cool to see an updated one of it going into 2007 --- see how things changed in the years.

I bet there would be a lot more 1GB/2GB responses for RAM since 1GB is now standard and people have been updating their Macs to 1GB+ for me, I have 768MB in my 12" G4 PB but 1GB or 1.25GB seems like it would be a better option... and I want to boost my iMac to 2GB.

Imagine 256MB... *shudder*

I think I have a 128 stick you can have for 5 bucks.

As to the thread, frankly, I really NOTICE the difference in action on my mac mini 1.5ghz maxed out with 1gb of ram and my same CPU speed 1.5ghz PPC Powerbook 12" wth 1.25gbs of ram -- both with the same hard drive 7200/100gb Travelstars. I want someone who can make doubled up ram chips so we can supercharge our old systems....

2 GB in my Duel 2.7 GHz PPC.

To the OP, 256 MB would hardly even startup my machine let alone run more than one app at a time. RAM is so cheap and the performance gain you get from adding a little more is so great it's rediculous not to.

I should also add I do print/web/video work and use every MB of RAM I have.

I'd say at least 50% of the members polled now would have 1GB+. Let's revive this in another few years and look back and laugh. 1-2GB of RAM, huh? Why less than 8 GB back then?
