In the United States, Apple has simply changed "open" status to "Processing Order." It is their new terminology.
As far as those who shipped, that is amazing, and it ticks me off a bit. I want mine! :)

I'm not even getting it delivered, so I guess I'll be getting it on the 29th.
Hey, if I use my iPod to back up my HD, and I erase my HD and do a fresh install of Tiger, will iTunes erase my iPod when I first plug it in, as my library on my Mac is empty and iTunes syncs my iPod to my iTunes library?
I'm just preparing for the big day (29th for me). Hope you guys report the bugs here so that I can wait for updates before installation. :)

Once again, I would like to point out that this week Apple U.S. store changed the terminology for order status. "Processing Order," is the new term for "open."
I find it very strange that Apple has already shipped Tiger to someone. We'll going to have to see, if anyone else reports this today. I just don't see it happening. For example, I didn't pay for shipping, and they have my order at 2-day air, so I'm sure they aren't going to want to send it out until just a couple days before the 29th. Unless they decided to save on shipping and they are shipping some of the orders via ground, a week early, and if you live close to the starting point you'll get it quite a bit early.

3 years ago I ordered my first product from Apple and it was shipped "next day DHL" but living out in the woods like I do DHL doesnt deliver in this area.Needless to say it took 4-5 days to get to me via a middleman delivery service.I called Apple and griped and since then all my orders have shipped via FedEx..

amazon has also changed their estimated ship times. mine says i'll get it on may 4, and they tend to be conservative in how they list estimated ship/arrival times. in the past, i've gotten things from them sooner than the date they listed, so i'll have it before the 4th i'm guessing, and still with the preorder discount.

You have the right to sue any one for anything you want. It is whether or not you have a valid claim. If not you would open yourself to being countersued, so tread lightly.
My two iSights were delivered via FedEx on Tuesday (although he was driving a Ryder truck, cause his regular truck was down.)
Everything I have ever ordered from Apple has come Fedex, I hope they continue to use Fedex their tracking system is way better than UPS.

Has Apple ever shipped a week early before?
Yes, they regularly do this with software releases so they can offer free shipping, then ship ground (up to 5 days,) which is a lot cheaper. So it's fairly common for them to ship pre-orders via ground 5 business days before "release".

Could anyone please tell me if Tiger ships with Java 5? I need it for work and until it's out on the Mac, I'm stuck with a PC for my contracts. I looked at the list of new features (http://www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/over200.html) and there's no mention of Java... :(

It was a tough call for me... pre-order online and get it first, or go to the nearest Apple Store at 6:00.
While it would be nice to get it a couple days early, I decided not to miss out on going to the Apple Store next Friday to buy it. Being a recent switcher, I want to see how it compares to standing in line at CompUSA to buy Windows 95/98/ME/XP at midnight :D

I've actually never been excited over a Windows release (I have a Windows box at home too) while every OS X release has been exciting... I think it's that there usually aren't much for "new features" for a "boring" user in Windows whereas OS X does offer more... ah well.

The last OS was the same way. It shipped before it should have, if thinking it ships 2day but.. I want to say mine shipped a week early but still didn't get here until the day of release. The shipper probably just held it at the local shipping depot until the date to assure its arrival ON TIME...not early. I would assume this is an Apple/Shipper agreement.

I remember it being released at CompUSA at something like MIDNIGHT. The local news station had a camera showing people standing at the door, then rushing past (nearly running over) sales people and one salesperson screaming "Its just an operating system, SLOW DOWN!!!"...

Two guys waiting in line to buy XP:
"Hey, what virus are you gonna get first?"
"Oh, hell with the viruses, I'm hoping I get some really vicious malware when I connect to the Internet."
"Hell yeah!" "Maybe I'll get lucky and get adware pop-ups all over the place, and then the system will crash!"
"That would ROCK!"

I remember it being released at CompUSA at something like MIDNIGHT. The local news station had a camera showing people standing at the door, then rushing past (nearly running over) sales people and one salesperson screaming "Its just an operating system, SLOW DOWN!!!"...
I got a huge chuckle out of it...sort of like those who stand in line to see Star Wars...geez, the movie sucked...just wait a few days, it'll be on DVD.Actually, there was a lot more to it than that.
For instance... the night Windows 95 came out, you could get an 8mb SIMM for $95. At the time, they were going for closer to $200.
When Windows 98 came out, they were selling 17" CRT's for $98 (which were going for well over $200 at the time) and new PC's for $198 (remember, this is well before the days of Dell's $299 system du jour).
When ME came out, they had a live band, free drinks, and lots of other free crap (I think I still have a Swatch-like Windows ME watch around here somewhere) as well as the usual sprinking of ultra-cheap sales.
Though, the XP launch was surprisingly spartan by comparison.
Anyway... I think most of the people who were there at (or before) midnight were there for the sales more than the new version of Windows. At the launches before XP, a lot of the sales were first-come-first-served. If you were one of the first three people to the back of the store, you got to walk out with an unbelievably cheap computer / monitor / whatever. Stuff so cheap that you'd be stupid not to buy it even just to sell it for $50 more before you left the parking lot.
Of course, we can go down the "Everything Is A Microsoft Conspiracy" path and wonder if the sales were subsidized by Microsoft to make the Windows launches look much better than they would have if the only thing people would have got by standing in line was a chance to pay full retail pricing on a new version of Windows ;)

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this...did anyone notice the other changes to the order status page?
They've added two new categories:
Replaced with New Product
We constantly strive to bring you the latest technologies, and one of our innovations has affected you. After you placed your order, we introduced an upgrade to a product you wanted, so we replaced the product with the upgraded version. The total cost of your order has not increased. You can get the details about your new product by visiting the Apple Store.
Sent to Manufacturing
We're building your system according to your custom specifications.
And you are now able to actually click on the order status messages, click to cancel (I think you always had to call to cancel), and they've made a small change to the buttons.

and .Mac question. They used to take $30 off your next .Mac year when you purchased a Mac. I am not due until October (as may of us old iTools users are). Will I save the $30 then? Or do you think (like I do) that the $70 is the new price (since it seems to be more ingrained in Tiger than it was in Panther)?
so tonight - I get to move from my iMac G3 to my PB G4. <vader>This will be a day long remembered.</vader>

Could anyone please tell me if Tiger ships with Java 5? I need it for work and until it's out on the Mac, I'm stuck with a PC for my contracts. I looked at the list of new features (http://www.apple.com/macosx/newfeatures/over200.html) and there's no mention of Java... :(
Doesn't look like it.

You're definately not the only person to ask about this, since the two have been developed together.
Java 5 requires 10.4 (and is in beta), but is not included on the 10.4 DVD (apparently). Apple won't say when when we'll see it.
It's currently only available for high-paying ADC members (since only they have 10.4 betas), but maybe in a few days when everyone has it they'll release a public beta. Here's hoping, anyway.

Well, yes and no. Tiger doesn't ship with it but it is offered as a "preview" download for developers:

You might have to get an ADC account (maybe the free one will work?)
My Tiger pre-order also has not yet shipped from Apple.

Presently, JDK 5 doesn't show up to free ADC members. Although I guess Apple could sniff your browser info to see what OS X version you're running.

I'm debating whether I should upgrade to Tiger from Panther or not. I have an 800Mhz G3 iBook with a Radeon 9000 graphics card.
Will I see a major performance hit if I upgrade? any thoughts on that or directions to Apple info that can help me in that decision?
Thanks.
How'd you manage to get a Radeon 9000 shoved into an iBook G3?

How much data do you think that they push out via Software Updater? I don't think that it is the bandwidth that is the issue, I think it is the DRM. Plus, most people would like to have a physical copy of their OS for installs. Also, in the event of a crash, it would be pretty difficult to fire up Software Updater...

Whenever I heard about Dashboard, I figured that it was an always-visible semi-translucent window layer for gadets, etc.
Apparently, Dashboard is activated like expose - you click a button (or a key) and the widgets switch-in, making your desktop into a temporary dashboard display. Then when you're done it switches the Dashboard layer out, bringing you back to whatever you were doing.
Is there a preference or something to make dashboard always-visible at 20% (or 10%) opacity?
It's kind of silly not to be able to see these widgets until you do something. It'd be much neater if they were visible all the time.
BTW, the Tiger UI seems to be about 15-20% faster then Panther on this 1ghz eMac I've got it running on. Very nice.
Most importantly, ASM still works! Yahoo!

Not sure I see the DRM issue... you would be downloading it from Apple.
No DRM exists on the Mac OS X DVD/CD to preventing you from letting friends use your disk, you ripping the disk and sharing, etc.
Apple tries to trust their users and I glad for that since adding DRM would just add to the potential issues at and after install time (as well as adding cost to Apple and users). Now if folks continue to break that trust then Apple may be forced to take action and use some type of DRM / system authentication.
Plus, most people would like to have a physical copy of their OS for installs. Also, in the event of a crash, it would be pretty difficult to fire up Software Updater...
Agreed however such a download would likely require one to burn the downloaded image to DVD before install anyways, so you would have a local physical copy.

I'm hoping to get my copy of Tiger on the 29th; that's my birthday so its the perfect present. Unfortunately I have 3 days of college left (finals :( ) and I figure I better wait until afterwards to install. I would hate to be at school, install Tiger and then not be able to get on the network or internet. Yes, that is unlikely, but very possible with my school. They force all residential PCs run Cisco Clean Access (I'm sure some of you know what this program is) and last Wednesday the server refused to let my PB onto the network. Something about access denied, but was resolved within 2 hours.

Well the download of Tiger is about the same as 800+ songs and the connection to download that large image would stay open far longer then for song downloads (unless they split the image up into pieces... adding to the user experience).
Bandwidth is an issue, as is user experience and support that would go along with it, etc.

I'd say developers will get their free Tiger DVD's in the next ADC mailing, which will probably be posted out in the first week of May. I doubt it will be the fully boxed retail version... Although it would be nice if they shipped to developers at the same time as those who preordered..
In the meantime I'm running the last seeded Build 8A425 for a while now without any problems.
The only thing that might cause some folks difficulty is when you install tiger, Mail converts your MBOX file to the new EMLX format to support Spotlight, which can be a bit of a pain. Especially if you use other email clients...
Anyway a useful fix can be found at EMLX to MBOX convertor (http://vengefulcow.com/emlx2mbox/)

Well I think it depends on the amount but I recall a full verification charge for a PowerMac I bough a couple of years back (not all card vendors list those but mine does via their online account site). Basically a reservation but not the actual charge.

Not if the translucency was set to 10-15%...and you throw your widgets onto your second monitor.
The reason is pretty simple: if something on a dashboard widget changes, you can't see it until you switch to the dashboard.
That's not a dashboard anymore, that's, well, something else...a desk accessory layer that's invisible most of the time.

Now it says shipping on or before the 28th! That's not fair that they changed it like that!

Also my plumbing has been backed up since NAB. The first time this happenned was leading up to WWDC 2003. Within 5 minutes of the G5s being announced, I had total relief.

No I think they are just annoyed that they aren't one of the people who is getting it already or they planned to buy on the first day of store sales and now they're worse off than people who pre-ordered. Personally I'm annoyed because Amazon is not shipping early at least yet.

This is from the Apple website to end all this, "OMG, it says 'Processing Order,' it must be coming tomorrow!" Sorry, kiddies, it only means it's in their computer waiting until someone comes along, gets the box, puts a label on it, and sends it out. Then, they click a button and your status says, "shipping." Shipping takes a few days... I'm in Canada, and my free shipping is 8 - 10 days, and express (cost extra bucks) is 3-6 days. I don't know the exact shipping day totals in America, but I gather it's pretty close.
So, once it says shipping, add a few days to it and you can guess when it Tiger may be coming to your door.
In other words, start getting excited when it says "shipping," not when it says "processing."
:D

I'm debating whether I should upgrade to Tiger from Panther or not. I have an 800Mhz G3 iBook with a Radeon 7500 32MB VRAM graphics card.
Will I see a major performance hit if I upgrade? any thoughts on that or directions to Apple info that can help me in that decision?
Thanks.
[edit] corrected video card [/end]
Your iBook is within Apple's specs:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html
No performance hit as long as you make sure your directory is in good shape prior to installing and follow all these precautions:

Not if the translucency was set to 10-15%...and you throw your widgets onto your second monitor.
The reason is pretty simple: if something on a dashboard widget changes, you can't see it until you switch to the dashboard.
That's not a dashboard anymore, that's, well, something else...a desk accessory layer that's invisible most of the time.
I run two monitors myself and Still need more. I dont think i could dedicate room just for a few widgets. but. I think your thinking more of heads up display then a dash.
with a dash in a car you look down to see it. otherise your looking straight ahead.. with the apple dashboard you only see the dash when you click a button. this can be a middle mouse button if you wanted too. and since it quickly jumps in with expose.. i dont see the need for them to occupy room 100% of the time.. but i suppose having the option wouldnt hurt
DickArmAndHarT
Apr 22, 2005, 04:55 PM
Yahoo!
Im not using Tiger yet, but i would never want little mini-apps on my screen over shadowing applicatoin, ohh how annoying that would be, little things u can see half see, being accidentaly clicked on everywhere

Yes, I think unless you were using some sort of hack that might be available around the place, iTunes will wipe your Pod...
I highly recommend you create a bunch of iTunes Backup playlists with all your music and burn them as DVD data discs (4.1 Gig each or so) from within iTunes. This will also serve you well in the future as an offsite backup against theft/fire. Once you have the discs you should be able to reimport them into your iTunes running on Tiger.
Not an expert at this but should work

Well, they don't occupy space, really. They just would sort of float there. To interact with them you'd still have to click the dashboard key/button.
Think of your monitors: one monitor is the primary, and the other one(s) have extra stuff. Your focus might shift from monitor to monitor, but (unless you have a really lazy eye) only one monitor is "primary."
The secondary monitors, well, those would be for dashboard widgets. They'd just sit on top of your other windows like ghosts.
Time to start figuring out how to hack that in. Once you see dashboard, you'd see why this would be a better idea (and the first real use for translucency I've seen).

Sorry but I have to butt in. iTunes will not wipe your iPod. After doing a clean install or whatever, and you hook up your iPod to your computer - iTunes will then open and ask if you would like the iPod to be synced with that computer. You select no, and your music will stay on your iPod. Then you could use some software to take it off.
However here is something more simple. Turn on disk mode - delete the songs from your itunes but be sure not to have those songs go to the trash. Drag your hold music folder to your iPod disk drive and they will be ready for you to drag onto your iTunes app when you do a clean install.
Whew...that's the best way if you don't have a dvd burner. I have about 2000 mp3s with no dvd burner yet, I know what its like to lose music and it sucky!

For whoever mentioned the Downloading thing, thee could be the steps:
Steps:
1) User downloads file from BitTorrent, which is 2 GB+
2) User runs application and uses password emailed to them
so the program can actually RUN
3) Once the install begins, the user enters a serial number given
in the same email
4) The user types in his email address/password exactly the same way
as they did to register to download tiger
5) Once it is 50% installed, the user must reboot his/her computer into
a new "safe mode" environment where he/she can download Tiger DRM
6) DRM downloaded, running DRM install package, requires
a new serial number, password, and proof of purchase
7) Setup resumes. The original serial number is used to make Tiger work.
8) The user must send the information to Apple servers to validate install.
9) Reboot machine and enjoy Tiger!
Needed materials: high speed internet, new apple bittorrent client (which is only downloadable after tigers purchase), DVD burner (1 DVD) or CD burner (6 CDs)
Serial number totals: 3 (4 w/ Apple ID)
When downloading DRM, it also downloads a few other files that without, Tiger can not run.
It not only would work, but would teach piraters a lesson: Pirate ANY steps and your machine is dead.
Its easier than XPs stupid activation which goes nowhere...

I've experienced the same thing with safari on my G5 (after the 10.3.9 update). It is being a real booger. Firefox on the same comp behaves normally. Safari directs me to the right page on my PB though. I'd normally mess with fixing permissions and what-not to see if it helps, but the whole drive is going to be wiped for the upcoming Tiger install. I can live for one more week of safari nonsense.

and .Mac question. They used to take $30 off your next .Mac year when you purchased a Mac. I am not due until October (as may of us old iTools users are). Will I save the $30 then? Or do you think (like I do) that the $70 is the new price (since it seems to be more ingrained in Tiger than it was in Panther)?
The $70 .Mac you buy with your Mac will be good in October. It's just a registration/renewal code pretty much. I bought my .Mac extension last year in April and I just opened its box and entered the renewal code to my account last week. Tiger's .Mac enhancements won't depend on the retail box of .Mac. They'll be integrated behind the scenes in the OS, your apps and the .Mac servers.

There are lots of free applications on VersionTracker.com which allow you to transfer all the music off of your iPod without using iTunes. Just do that before you launch iTunes for the first time, and when iTunes asks you if you want it to search the HD for available audio files and add them to the Library, just click 'Yes'. :)

I've never had to use software to rip off my iPod.
If I want to back-up, I just copy the /Music/iTunes Folder into my iPod, and it happily co-exists with the music that was put there by iTunes.
Then I can drag the iTunes folder back off the iPod, and voila.

Apple's website still says they are shipping with Panther, and it usually takes awhile for Apple to get the machines loaded up. They also have to change the graphics on the box and PB manuals because they usually have OS screenshots.
There is still plenty of stock out there of Panther-loaded machines.

Heh, let's see...all that's needed to cover the OS upgrade are the OS to be sent to the factory (already done, probably the moment that 8A428 got the go ahead, they probably started switched to it,) stickers to cover up the spots necessary to signify the new release (screenshots already printed probably 3 weeks before GM, and new text too!) and websites are known to be purposefully behind schedule so as to prevent a rush of ordering until they are ready...soooooooo, think twice before pushing the button next time, 'kay? :) Just because a source says it doesn't come with it, doesn't always mean it's true, especially in the case of improvements and upgrades.

He will then cancel/return the other orders I suppose.
'm going to cancel or refuse the ones that don't come first. I only have one mac, so I only need one copy. I did cancel the MacMall one today, for it was obvious they figured out their blunder early in the week.
Now I only have Apple.com and Amazon preorders.
 Now that's dedication!! ROTFL

Piss & ****. Maybe they only use DHL for AppleCare services.
Nope, I don't think so... I just got some prints from iPhoto/Kodak today and it says on the package it shipped via DHL. By the way, first time I ever used the service, and the prints turned out amazing. Just got back from Italy/Greece a couple weeks ago and I was very pleased. :)

Do you know where the prints came from? I live in Alberta too, and I'd be tempted to try it out if I knew who was printing them. Was it an international shipment?

I just ordered Tiger from Apple store and I am still going to that Apple event, just to see how it is. If I get Tiger before the event, then guess what guys, I am going with my pb to irritate some guys in line :) !!!
And it too says on my order confirmation that it will ship by or on April 28th

Interesting story on xlr8yourmac.com. Apparently one of the dealers who sent Tiger out early is trying to get customers to send it back!

LMAO! That's whack... I wonder who'd go along with that and send it back...
Like alot of you here mine is still "processing" with an estimated 4/28 shipment... I hope I get it like Monday or so. That would own so much... I'll let you know when it's been shipped! ^_^

It says on one sticker: 'Apple, 2811 Laguna Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95758'
Then on Expedited Parcel:
From: GLOBAL MAIL
Exp: 7496 BATH RD #2
MISSISSAUGA ON L4T 1L2
So I'm not sure who actually prints them. My uneducated guess tells me they print them in CA, then mail them to ON, then ship them to me. I'll be honest, it took a long time to mail (almost 3 weeks! Maybe it's different for others  ), so if you're in a hurry, opt for something else, but if you want a surprise in your mailbox, go with iPhoto. Or you want to mail some pics to a friend who lives in Newfoundland, you can send it right to them when you order your prints in iPhoto.
The pictures turned out real well...

I'd go with that! The mail order dealer offered to throw in iLife or iWork. I'd install it, send it back, and get it back in a week with a copy of iWork :)

For a free copy of one of those, hell yeah I'd sent it back and wait a few days to get it back.

If I absolutely had to send it back I'd first rip copies of the discs.

Mine's gone from "Open" to "Processing Order."
Hopefully that means it'll ship today.
Mine has said "Processing Order" for several days now. Still no sign of shipment.

*shakes head* Some people do anything just to get attention.. Sad aint it? What's possibly sadder is that some people seem have fallen for it as far as I can tell.... (Unless they're playing along, of course.)

For days now I have not been able to access the "My Account" or "Check Order Status" pages at the Apple store, regular and edu. Anyone else having this issue? I get a Bad Server Request page.
Safari on X.3.9
Edit: I just tried with Explorer [yuk], and it worked. ?
Try Firefox. Its nicer than IE & works for everything on my Macs. I use several websites that will not work with Safari. For that reason I've stopped using Safari on a regular basis early last January.

I checked my order and it also says "Processing Order". Then I decided to check the Order Status Help and "Open" is not listed there anymore as a possible value.

If you use Carbon Copy Cloner, there would not be a problem. It is capable of bypassing the iPod security and copy the entire library to your disk. All you have to do later is to update the links in iPod.

NO TIGER GM FOR DEVELOPERS YET!
It is interesting to see that Tiger is being shipped already to the general public and will be available to them on April 29th, but ADC Select and Premium Members have to wait several days (a week or more if you are overseas as I am) even after the release on April 29th before we will get our Tiger GM copy! We are stuck with Build 8A425!
Something smells like Tiger poop here!

hey, for those of you having bad server requests on apple's order status page in safari, delete all cookies from apple.com then go back and reenter your login info. this will fix the problem. its been suggested earlier in this thread by another poster, as i had the same problem.
Been having this problem for months but this solved it! Thanks mate ;)
Unfortunately my order status is still Open :o

They are probably worried that as soon as they release it on ADC it will be pirated. But of course that has already happened unfortunately. Maybe it was one of the people boxing it? Who knows... somehow it got out there.

Hi All,
I pre ordered on the very day Apple decided to take orders. Unfortunately my order is still 'Open' :(
Is it just Stateside where Tiger is shipping early or does this include UK also? Always wondered....does Apple export it's software from the US or will there be a batch manufactured in the UK or Eire?
Really looking forward to this release as much as I was with Jaguar and Panther. I think the updates have been very much worth it each time. I have no complaints. I hope my Radeon 9800pro does the biz with Core Image though.

Everyone's says processing or open, and that just means "we have your order and will ship it when we want to". If it doesn't get shipped by Wednesday then I doubt it will get to us on Friday.
