The iPhone 3GS is still holding strong in the U.S. smartphone market, ranking (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/22/iphone-4-and-3gs-rank-as-best-selling-u-s-smartphones/) as the second most popular handset during the second quarter. The device's success is clearly due to the low $49 price tag, even if the cost of the service contract greatly exceeds that of the iPhone itself over the two-year term.

Last week, we noted (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/18/iphone-price-cuts-free-3gs-from-best-buy-and-99-iphone-4-from-telus/) that we had received a tip that Best Buy would be offering an even better deal on the iPhone 3GS for today only, dropping the price to free with a two-year contract. That deal has indeed gone live (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Misc/null/pcmcat248000050016.c?id=pcmcat248000050016) today, with the free iPhone 3GS being selected as Best Buy's "Deal of the Day".

Best Buy offered an identical promotion (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/09/best-buy-mobile-to-offer-free-iphone-3gs-on-contract-tomorrow/) last December.

Not a bad deal if you don't need (want) the very latest. ;) :D

Tied into a two year contract with a phone that probably only has a reasonable life of one year before it stops receiving updates?

If I wanted that I'd buy an Android.

There's nothing free about a $1,800 contract.

Soon they'll be paying you to take the phone, as long as you sign up for the contract.

I think the point here is that people would rather have a two year old iPhone for 50$ than an android phone they can get for free with a contract.

Where I am, water is more expensive than gasoline.

Oh, and gasoline is $0.15 a gallon. :p

American corporations starving the American people..

At two years old, I can't wait to update from this 3GS. Technology has evolved a lot in the past two years, and I can't imagine how much it will evolve in the next two years. When you're paying $1800+ for a phone contract, why would you want to be locked into a phone that will be 4 years old at the end of your contract term? I can't give away this 3GS fast enough, lol.

That's a great deal. Many don't do much other than talk / surf / txt. 3GS does that fine.

I was going to upgrade my wife's 3G. She has the grandfathered "unlimited data plan" but Best Buy requires you to select a data plan, and guess what? Unlimited is not one of them. It looks like this is intentional.

So, forget it.

Ha. I said years ago that the iPhone would one day be free with a contract. People here derided me.

It is very literally One Day. I do wonder if after iP5 comes out if they will drop 3GS or keep it free for the next cycle.
