The iPhone 3GS is still holding strong in the U.S. smartphone market, ranking as the second most popular handset during the second quarter. The device's success is clearly due to the low $49 price tag, even if the cost of the service contract greatly exceeds that of the iPhone itself over the two-year term.

Last week, we noted that we had received a tip that Best Buy would be offering an even better deal on the iPhone 3GS for today only, dropping the price to free with a two-year contract. That deal has indeed gone live today, with the free iPhone 3GS being selected as Best Buy's "Deal of the Day".

Best Buy offered an identical promotion last December.

Tied into a two year contract with a phone that probably only has a reasonable life of one year before it stops receiving updates?

If I wanted that I'd buy an Android.

I think the point here is that people would rather have a two year old iPhone for 50$ than an android phone they can get for free with a contract.

At two years old, I can't wait to update from this 3GS. Technology has evolved a lot in the past two years, and I can't imagine how much it will evolve in the next two years. When you're paying $1800+ for a phone contract, why would you want to be locked into a phone that will be 4 years old at the end of your contract term? I can't give away this 3GS fast enough, lol.

That's a great deal. Many don't do much other than talk / surf / txt. 3GS does that fine.

I was going to upgrade my wife's 3G. She has the grandfathered "unlimited data plan" but Best Buy requires you to select a data plan, and guess what? Unlimited is not one of them. It looks like this is intentional.

So, forget it.

Ha. I said years ago that the iPhone would one day be free with a contract. People here derided me.

It is very literally One Day. I do wonder if after iP5 comes out if they will drop 3GS or keep it free for the next cycle.
