It used to be very easy to zoom into any area of the screen (and I'm not talking about within the web browser) while holding Control, but it doesn't seem to be working that way in Lion. The only way seems to be the "Zoom in window"option, but that is not what I'm looking for. Does anyone know something about it?

System Preferences>Trackpad

Make sure Zoom is on then click options... Check the check box at the bottom "Use scroll wheels with modifier keys to zoom" and make sure it has the Control icon ^ selected.

It's buggy in Lion, sometimes you have to activate the screen saver to fix it.

It's a bug: it sometimes just stops working. Put your computer to sleep and wake it, or reboot, and it might start working again. Maybe you can try disabling it in System Preferences, and enabling it again to make it work. It will stop working in a while again though.
