View Full Version : Need a name for my new boat
EJBasile
Apr 23, 2005, 06:30 PM
I just purchased my first boat. It's a 33' Grady White Express 330 with dual 250hp outboard motors and a bow thruster and generator. It has a Furuno GPS/Plotter, Fishfinder/sonar, Radar, Autopilot, and VHF radio. Inside it has a stove, microwave, fridge, sleeping for 4-5, bathroom (head + shower), 45 gallon livewell, teak flooring and trim. Also there is a fish freezer on deck and a tv with dvd and VHS, and a bose stereo system. Additionally a Cell Phone repeater/booster to improve cell phone range.
Right now shes getting all the electronics installed on her. I can't wait to get her in the water. I love the water and fishing, I'll be taking a few vacation days from work lol.
I need to find a name for my new boat. My parent's yacht is "Nautica" and my brother in laws grady white is "Hook 'er" (no not like a prostitute).
Also i forgot to ask the dealer about a trailer. Does anyone know if this thing is easily towable? The boat weighs 10,000 pounds so I would need a trailer and a big pickup.

In an unrelated topic I just found out the vanity plate I want to get for my Range Rover is not taken! Its gonna be "RNG-RVR".
Since I love landrovers maybe I should name my boat Sea Rover. Nahh I don't like it. I saw a boat in a harbor named Seavette before though.

This reminds me of a story of one of my grandfather's friends who bought a fairly good size boat. This guy had it built to exact specifications and had a budget that he quickly surpassed with all the fees, taxes and nickel and dime charges. Finally when the boat was almost complete and time to pay up the sales guy in charge of the project said that with a boat of above $40,000 he can get any name painted on the back.
He said some exotic phrase (can't remember what the phrase was or even what language, like Mandarin or Tagalog) he picked up when traveling. All I can remeber was what it translated in to english.
Translation was "Bend Over Here it Comes Again".

Naming your boat is tough. Honestly I haven't named mine. I'm still stuck with the old name from the previous owner. Your boat sounds like a real beauty. What nationality are you? Are you irish, german, etc.
Anyway:
bellus = beautiful in latin
divinus = sacred
Seaduction
Charisma
I could keep going. :)
What are your hobbies? Fishing? What else can you tell us that would be useful in helping you name your boat?

Hey Jessica
What's "Empty Wallet" in Latin?
EJ, if you go with a female type name you'd better pick it to be pretty generic -- Hard to explain Miranda Sue to your date named Megan...
But if you go too generic, like : "My Beloved" or "Sweetheart" then everyone will think you've fixated on the boat... but then...
My Precious?? Now that's got a ring to it.
May help explain how the money disappeared tho'.

Rookies.
It has to be a woman's name.
No catchy phrases, no funny sayings, uh uh, nope no way.
I delivered a boat to Miami from Annapolis once with some catchy name and we almost broke off the mast off of Hatteras.
Delivered another one from Cape Cod to the Virgins named "Jim's Fun." We hit a container off of New York and almost sank.
My reccomendation: "Joy."

Umm well, it can be Vaccus Pera. I believe Pera is very correct, meaning wallet or bilfold. But I am not latin nor did I study much of it. Vaccus is vacant, it could be Inanis as well. Inanis Pera.

I'm a General Surgeon meaning I deal pretty much with abdominal organ and wall surgery. I do pretty much repair stuff like hernias and appendicitis. I have some knowledge trauma work, orthopedic, plastic surgery, oncologic, etc. Basically a well rounded surgeon that has knowledge of the major doctor subjects. Not all General Surgeons preform many operations. So take the boring route and have a desk job of advising people on having surgeries.
No I'm not a Urologist.

I don't want to be arsh, but if you don't know the translations or any latin grammar, don't just make it up. he might have followed your suggestions ;). vaccus doesn't really exist, but the closest thing would be the "masculine" version of vacca (ae), which is cow (however bull is taurus and ox is bos, bovis. the word you are looking for is vacuus, but it must be declined to follow pera, so it would be "Vacua Pera" (nominative, feminine) which would be best translated as 'empty bag'. But yes, a funny name.

How bout "Way to much spent on electonics"
Well, according to my brother, who has owned a few boats (Current one is 39' but looking at a 54') he says that the happiest moments in a boat owners life are the day you buy your boat and the day you sell it!
Why? Because you will spend a lot keeping the darn thing going. There are the usual costs of fuel, oil, porting/docking/berthing, storing (if you have to pull it out), cleaning the hull, etc. But things break and need to be replaced. Or you want to install optional items. Unfortunately, items made for boats seem to cost more than the same item would normally sell for. Plus there are expensive installation costs.
So that leads me to suggesting the following. Call it the...
The Black Hole!
or...
The Money Pit
or...
after you wife's name. :D

I see from your user profile that you are a surgeon. How about...
"Cutting Crew"
"Saline Solution"
"Incision"
"Scalpel"
Or, if you plan to spend a lot of time on the water instead of in your office, name your boat "Recertification". That way your receptionist can honestly tell your patients that you're not in the office today because you're away on "Recertification". (That sounds a lot better than telling them you've gone fishing...)
Too bad you weren't a lawyer or a porn star, then you could go with "Twin Screws". Congratulations, that's a beautiful boat!

If you can tow that boat, legally, you are ahead on everybody. A 33 foot boat in Australia must be moored, and slipped yearly for anti-fouling etc. I should know, I have a 35Foot Sea Ray. So, in short, NO I have a question. Why Out-Boards? The technology with stern/shaft drives has accelerated so much that it is cheaper to run a stern drive than a Honda Outboard, because of the differences in room required for the motor and components etc.
I can't help with a name, so it is up to the other members with that.

She does a respectable speed of about 40 knots down hill with a tail wind, but I just cruise at about 25-30 knots. I will assume you know what anti-fouling is, because of the smiley. For anybody that doesn't: Antifoulants are chemicals that are coated on to surfaces to prevent algae, seaweeds and marine organisms from attaching to the surface. For a boat such as mine, it spends more time stationary moored than actually going anywhere. This is the major downside to blowing $350,000 on a boat, when in Winter, you can't get the other half out of the electric blanket to go for a cruise down the 'Hacking' (a river literally metres from my house).

I like "cutter" to go with the surgeon theme.
Other names I have seen or liked.
Tidings (with a dinghy named Glad) My parents former sailboat.
Indaqua - sounds vageuly like the Massasoit language of Rhode Island and Southeastern Mass, but is just In-D-Aqua ;) That was some friends of my folks.
Samurai - goes along with the cutting theme, it was a J24 I used to race on.
But I think my favorite was FUJIMO. Rumour has it, the guy raced so much on his boat, his wife finally told him he had to give up the boat or she was leaving.
So he renamed his boat - F*** You Jane, I'm Moving Out :D
A few more random ones...
