Apple has partially opened their Dashboard Widgets page (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/dashboard/) in their Mac OS X Downloads Area.
At present the Download Page is only partially active with file names linking to missing pages, but download links for many of the widgets are presently available.
3rd party widgets include a mini RSS reader, solitaire, Send SMS, Quicktime player, FedEx tracker and more... Widgets are activated by simply double clicking on their icon in Mac OS X 10.4's Finder.

Okay, so I've tried a couple widgets - and some I don't like. How do you uninstall them? I understand how to remove them from your dashboard or whatever, but how do you get them removed from the available ones in the, emm, whatever you call it - a tray?

Based on the styling of other RSS feed URLs for Apple Mac OS X Downloads categories, I determined correctly the one for Dashboard Widgets (http://www.apple.com/main/rss/downloads/dashboard.rss). It's not showing anything yet; I assume functionality will arrive soon.

Widgets are mostly HTML/XML based with style sheets. Some widgets will actually work in a browser. There might be other ways to make widgets also. Apps should be self explanatory.

I have mixed feelings about widgets and dashboard. Nothing dashboard offers is new it is just how to get the information that is. Sherlock is like the old dashboard in a lot of ways. The internet and full apps provide much more information than dashboard does. However, to have all this information so quick and easy with preset information like city for weather and translation language is really nice. I can see how having a small screen and lots of widgets is going to be a problem. I think dashboard needs to have an expose like feature where you can set up your widgets in groups and at the touch of a button show those grouped widgets and hide the rest. These new widgets are making me like dashboard a lot more. On kind of a side note it would be great to be able to put in any carriers tracking number and have it figure out which carrier it belongs to and track the package instead of just having one for fed ex. Anyway a lot of good stuff and a lot of potential too.

Am I the only person just a little disappointed with Tiger? I mean - there are some cool things in it but it didn't make my 1GHz Powerbook feel any faster. It didn't add any really cool functionality. Maybe there was some tinkering under the hood but I don't see it at all. This really does feel like it should have been a free upgrade - almost like they were REALLY trying to make it worth the money but just couldn't come up with enough new features.

Does the Dashboard SDK come with Tiger and do you have to install XCode? From what I read the SDK has a lot more documentation than Apple has on their site for creating widgets.

I would say that you represent a minority view on the subject. There are several other Tiger threads where folks have given all the reasons they think Tiger's great, so I won't attempt to repeat them here. If Tiger isn't worth it to you, run Panther.

Thanks zellin! I did not know that Google would do that. I just tested UPS and FedEx tracking info and find it much easier than going to the shipper's home page, selecting which country I'm in, agreeing to their terms, entering in a number, and finally seeing the info. This is great! Now someone please make the widget if Apple does not.

I agree with the pervious poster. Tiger is not really all that different from Panther from the users perspective. Sure there's spotlight, which takes an increadible amount of "behind the scenes" to make happen. There's also dashboard, I think it's cool but nothing I didn't have before, just a different way to get it. There's a few other cool stuff, but overall from the initial perspective, it seems like a minor update.
Honestly, the biggest advancements in Tiger are two fold. The first being 64bit OS for G5 processor machines and second being the CORE VIDEO. At first this seems like a minor thing, but for developers creating mac specific apps, this could be huge. This could open up a whole world in MACOSX. Imagine the ability to theme the desktop like never before could have been done. It'll be intersting to see where these two major advancements take us.
Sure, they're kinda' "boring" at first, but being true 64bit is HUGE and having an amazing OpenGL environment is essential for todays apps.

Most of them will work in a browser but I think the ones that have spinning preference pages etc, need to use different code that won't work fully.

I guess I would ask you what you would want to see in an upgrade such as Tiger. I feel like they put a lot of work into a lot of things that make everything run much smoother, but we just don't see it at face value. Convince me there is some feature that would make Tiger worth paying for.

There will probably a lot of coders that will start developing widgets when Tiger arrives. It would be great to have a website where you can find all these widgets. So I registered widgetsweb.com to fill this gap! Hope to have the website up in a few days.

I don't think apple is going to release any more OS's before Longhorn unless they are sure that they are going to get it finished before Longhorn. If they have an OS looming, then they are setting themselves up for attack my MS saying "Look, they can't release an OS on time either!" (completely ignoring the fact that apple has released 2-3? operating sytems in the time it takes them to release one). I expect we will see something announced directly after Longhorn is released, unless there are unexpected delays.

Definitely, Apple has been displaying how Tiger has come out before Longhorn and with "the same" technology Longhorn is supposed to display. If they released another OS, it would seem that they are trying to desperately compete with Longhorn...Though how buggy windows is, it probably will just be competing against itself :) . I would be highly surprised if they decided to make another release before Longhorn.

Creating a Bible lookup would be pretty easy, I think: basically just create a web page that has a simplified version of the form on the biblegateway page and repurpose it as a widget.
The sports ticker would just be an RSS reader that scrolls the results horziontally. You'd need an RSS source for sports scores.

That's only going to be true if the vast majority of widgets are only created by American Apple users. Look at the Konfabulator page: they have plenty of stuff from outside the US: just to take the RSS feeds category (where this matters most) Canada, Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Japan, Turkey . . .

I wondering if any of these widgets will be useful here in Brazil, to me... I think some of them yes, like google, wheather and some other commented here (like solitare!! ;) ) but I don't see many other utilities... Fed Ex, for example, hardly anybody uses it... I think that in 3 or 4 years we will benefit more from these things.
First of all, I'll need to sign a fast Internet because a dialed one, like I do now, with a 33.600 modem, will simply kill the biggest advantges of the Tiger new apps...
I'll order my Mini in May 10th. Will Tiger come pre-installed?

Does anyone know what security considerations have been built into Dashboard? I've read that widgets have access to Cocoa classes so can pretty much do anything on the system - I'd hope that Apple have designed some sort of sandboxing in there, otherwise it could end up being a nightmare along the same lines as ActiveX (although not quite that bad).

How do you delete a widget? I spotlighted tile game and dragged it into the trash, but when I open the dashboard the tile game remains but it's icon is changed and it can't open. Seeing this I put tile game back into its widget folder and now it runs again, but the icon hasn't changed. It has the same icon as the dashboard.app, any suggestions?
Edit: It seems resetting the comp changes the icon back. Still, how to delete it?

Okay, after pressing F12 a few dozen times and flipping the widgets once or twice I just may forget that Dashboard exists. Spotlight is handy although the interface (yes yet another interface for Mac OS X) is a little confusing. There are lots of little adjustments and additions all over the place which I guess may be useful when you remember to look for them. Tiger may be the first X update that most users will feel a little let down, especially after all the hype coming from Apple and the rumor/discussion sites. It's good but be prepared not to be blown away.

Good news then! All of these widgets have a desktop equivalent. Try running calculator and see how much it looks like the calculator widget.
Just because you don't see a point for dashboard doesn't mean it's not useful for other people. As a bike commuter in a mountain climate I check the weather reports _a lot_, and it's always been a pain to keep opening a browser and going to weathernetwork.ca. A weather report is not worth an icon in my dock, and I really don't need it running beside other apps. But with the weather widget, F12 gives me fast access to the weather, and at the same time I can see the stickies I've put up (which have always been useless in the desktop because they just get buried under windows and I never see them).
Ditto for the dictionary and calculator, which are usually one off things anyway (I can't count how many times on my work computer I go through start->run->calc, it's great to just have it running in the background), and for the stock ticker so I can watch stock prices.
It's like expose -- does it look flashy? Yes. Is it absolutely necessary to use a computer? No. Does it improve productivity? Absolutely.

I was curious about leaving them on the desktop full time like Konfabulator. I usually have my to-do list and weather widgets always on screen. Bummer. Anyways I think someone needs to man up and design a widget just like Konfabulator's Gmail Geiger. It's basically a widget that appears when you have mail in your Gmail account and it shows you how many new messages.

Just curious, but if you want it on your desktop, why don't you just run an app? I picture using dashboard for all that informational stuff that I just don't want on my desktop, because it will clutter the screen and get stuck behind all the other windows where I won't notice it anyway.

i listen to KEXP.org all day and like to know what song they are playing. my konfabulator widget updates via their website and tells me. i just have to glance at my desktop to see the band and title. and it updates at a preset interval as long as it is running. i think dashboard only updates when it's activated so i may have to wait a second (or more) for it to update.

i listen to KEXP.org all day and like to know what song they are playing. my konfabulator widget updates via their website and tells me. i just have to glance at my desktop to see the band and title. and it updates at a preset interval as long as it is running. i think dashboard only updates when it's activated so i may have to wait a second (or more) for it to update.
That's interesting, and it shows that if the konfabulator people haven't thrown too much of a snit there might still be an opening for them.
See, to me desktop widgets are useless. I have so many windows open that anything that floats on top obscures something else I'm working on, and anything that doesn't float gets buried so that by the time I command tab to find it, it would have been easier to hit F12 and wait for the update.
But obviously there are a lot of people missing the desktop widgets (this reminds me a lot of what happened with expose, the Mac community was really divided on the usefulness of it based on their work patterns) and the knofabulator group already has the expertise to fill that void...

Here's a couple of widgets I'm working on with another guy (he's coding, I'm doing the graphics).
Tracker Parcel tracking.
Eventually this will support several services.
Fuel Guage See how much HD space is available.
Both will be available from http://www.widgetdeveloper.com/ as soon as we've finished them. The guy I'm working with has some other widgets in the pipeline. Also, we're looking for suggestions... so post them here if you'd like us to work on it.
awesome!!!
some widgets I'd like to see:
VoiceMemo (with a simple iTunes-like drill-down filing metaphor)
ImageSearch (featuring Google and maybe others)
Remote (to control some kind of X-11 type connected interface for room lighting, etc.)
and some games to pass the time while we watch our loved ones traverse the globe in the flight info widget...
Chess (could use the same GPL'd chess engine Apple's Chess uses)
Backgammon (there's also a GPL'd engine for this)
MAME (or even a few individual remade games, like Space Invaders)

I like widgets on the desktop as well -- I have a number of Konfabulator widgets that I use regularly, and I like have immediate access to them. Given that widgets will run in Safari 1.3, I imagine that it will be relatively easy for someone to put together a WebKit-based engine that will run widgets on the desktop (although I really would like to see this as a built-in Dashboard option).

a Bible thing to type in a verse referance and it pulls up the verse from somewhere like biblegateway.com would be cool too.
Hey, Tony... if you find anything like this, let me know. I would be interested as well.

What happens when Apple runs out of big-cat names? Will they start using Mean sounding names like?
Mac OS X v10.? "Rottweiler"
Mac OS X v10.? "Wolverine"
Go get'em Tiger!
They have enough names to last them until OS 11. The only question I have is what will the names be then? I would prefer something that actively rubs it in MS's face.
Maybe
OS 11.0: "So hows that Longhorn thing working out" Edition
OS 11.1: "You got served" Edition
OS 11.2: "Copy THIS!" Edition
OS 11.3: "pwned!!" Edition
OS 11.4: "Making it look easy" Edition
OS 11.5: "Still here" Edition
OS 11.6: "Gates vs. Jobs" Edition
OS 11.7: "Micro Who?" Edition
OS 11.8: "Nothing but net" Edition
OS 11.9: "What does getting drop kicked by a small company feel like?" Edition
Or maybe.....
OS 11.0: "You" Edition
OS 11.1: "talk" Edition
OS 11.2: "Smack," Edition
OS 11.3: "but" Edition
OS 11.4: "what" Edition
OS 11.5: "version" Edition
OS 11.6: "Are" Edition
OS 11.7: "you" Edition
OS 11.8: "on" Edition
OS 11.9: "now?" Edition
Leave everyone hanging for the next version.... :D

We are going off the topic here SiliconAddict, but take a look at that quote that I pulled from googled web site.
"According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Apple registered four new trademarks in early July: Cougar, Lynx, Leopard and Tiger. All four were filed under the "computer operating system software" category.'

I am finding Dashboard very useful, especially when in PhotoShop.
Before, I had to remember all the RGB numbers to put them into calculator to find thier mean, but now I just pull of Dashboard with its transparent background and can look at the number at the same as i punch them in.
Or to do other minor stuff without going through all those windows.
Any pro user will find them usefull. And this is becouse of all the windows and apps that we constantly have open.
what is the point of buying 20" or 23" display to gain realestate and to cover it up with those widgets?

There is lots of good stuff in the dev tools folder. Check out Quartz Composer, you can make your own slideshows and Apple rss type screensavers using a object oriented programming metaphor. There screensavers can respond to CPU load on one or two CPU's, audio, midi, tons of cools stuff.
I already have made 5 screensavers.

i want a widget thats like a super fast picture viewer.
like i could just hold the arrow button down and it would zip through
the pictures. But the pictures still have to be visible. I dont want to open itunes and the finder used to do this but now its too slow.
kinda like when in that movie, "the last starfighter", Grig is showing Alex his pictures from home on that little picture viewer thing and whips through like a hunderd pictures in like a second...
does anyone know what im talking about?

I think Dashboard's usefulness will grow considerably over the next few months.
I agree. I think this is Apple's secret with Tiger. Make it simple to build beautiful and amazing little apps which springs innovation in the developer community and differentiates OSX even more.
Same goes for automator.

I haven't installed Tiger yet (it's on the FedEx truck though!) but I assume that widgets can be modified fairly easily. I've seen replacement skins for the calculator widget already. Am I right that reducing the size of the Gmail widget might be as little work as replacing some of the image files and changing the font size specified in the html?

You can using Amnesty (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17922), it lets you set (per widget) to float above all windows, layer normally or stick to the desktop.
