View Full Version : Longhorn to Include Genie Effect (kinda)?

I was watching Bill G.'s keynote at WinHec2005 out of curiousity.

At one point, he has one of his underlings come out to expalin some of the new GUI look that Longhorn will be using, if it ever comes out.

He is talking about the new minimizing animation, and he clicks the minimize button. The window begins to shrink towards the taskbar just like Apple's Genie's effect.

Although, about halfway down towards the taskbar, the Window just "evaporates". He even "slowed" it down like you can with OS X.

To paraphase Steve, they cannot even copy correctly.

It doesn't surprise me that microsoft is looking towards OS X for ideas ... IF that's what they're doing.

imitation is the stupidest form of flattery  wonder if anyones made a list of Longhorn features stolen from OS X?

Konfubulator was never a copywrited idea, because they weren't the ones who came up with the idea of widgets in the first place....

On Topic:

MS borrowing ideas from OS X? never! ;)

Not to stray off topic but does anyone else think Bill looks like utter Hell? Look at the keynote he looks like he just rolled out of bed and he slept in his clothes.

Maybe because he spent all night making his Longhorn skin for OSX. :p

I'm watching the webcast now to get to the subject at hand. But, damn it's frick*n boring over there. It's nothing like WWDC or Macworld. And you'd think that Gates would look a bit more presentable being the richest man in the world.

this is why Konfubulator was never patented or anything, because they couldnt, they were just copying off of this.....and apple just continued to improve upon it....

but not many people know this obviously

Once again, MS copies Apple and comes out on the bottom. The Genie (or scale) effect is designed to point the user to EXACTLY where the minimised window goes.

In Windows, the window kinda fades to the bottom of the screen, same size and all. HELLO! HOW IS THIS HELPFUL?? it goes down there somewhere...that's about all it tells you. How to bring it up again? who knows. A perfect example of why Windows will never be easy to use. OSX uses eye candy to HELP the user. Windows uses it to CONFUSE the user.

and apple just continued to improve upon it....Sorry to stay off topic, but isn't this more like a resurrection than an improvement? Back on topic: I don't remember anything in any previous versions of Windows that even remotely resembles the Genie effect ;)

it sorta is a ressurection, but i think the implementation has been improved up greatly, as well as how easy and simple it is

When I get my hands on Build 5048 of Longhorn, or a copy of Beta 1, I'll post screenies. But from what I've seen, yes, they are stealing from us Mac users again to include it in that POS.

I think Longhorn is going to be a great release personally, but tired of every mac users pointing fingers if there is a similar idea. I dunno anything about this genie like effect, but I forgot Apple owns the rights to any sort of window transition, sorry about that.

Its evident it comes down to personal preference, don't use MS products if you don't like them. Its like some mac users are jealous because more people use MS operating system. I have used osx for a long time, and have it on my laptop and also use PC. I can honestly say after using both I enjoy working on my pc way more, I find it is better at multitasking. Hell my 3 year old pc runs faster than my powerbook, and I havent had any defects with the parts (broken latch on laptop, white spot area on screen, battery defect).

Anyways sorry to crap in this thread, but I think there are some people who need to grow up.

I really like the new file organization in Longhorn. I like how you can actually see the document in the file browser. Granted the UI is hidious, it's obvious what MS took from Apple. For example: did anyone notice the scaling zoom feature in the file browser that works just like iPhoto?

Nspace

The UI will definitely change no doubt.

Omg if I were the average user I would click the minimize button and then say WHERE THE ******* DID MY WINDOW GO!

It just fades out, there is no way of seeing that it is going to the dock.

:(

"THEY ARE ANTS!" - Bill Gates, being made fun of in FAMILY GUY!

Yes, I can't see the keynote either but the new Longhorn build is F-UGLY! They even removed the greatest longhorn feature, the SideBar! OK so the Alpha sidebar sucked, but if its ANYTHING like MSNs, its great. I want the sidebar!

And the Genie Effect in Longhorn is pretty horrible I must say... Copy Something Correctly.

A few comments on the WinHEC broadcast...

Longhorn doesn't look half bad compared to Windows XP. Sure, some or all of what they presented are already available in other operating systems... the "Virtual Folders" are basically Tiger's Smart Folders. The icons representing the actual document have been available in Linux for years. The search bar in the Start menu isn't as easy to use as Quicksilver.

The idea of being able to use their Spotlight-esque product across the network sounds good for people like me forced to work in a Windows world. Unfortunately, it requires all the servers/clients to use Longhorn as well which will make it worthless to me, we still have people using NT 4. I liked the application scaling feature that he showed using Calculator. The "printer printing native Metro (is that what its called?)" scared me a little... what does this mean compatibility wise?

Anyway the demo wasn't 100% repulsive (except damn those guys are boring) and I'm glad to see they've come along way from their last beta (which was basically Windows XP with a different color scheme)
