Why is auto save bad? I have Office for Mac and I just read that it will soon have auto save, but everyone seems to hate it. Why is this? It seems like it couldn't be anything but helpful. Also, do we know if Office will save in docx by default?

Auto-save is bad because it saves everything without user consent, even if you don't want the changes to be saved. For example, let us say that you open a photo and hit the rotate button so that the photo fits your screen better, then you close the file. In the past, that rotate operation was simply a viewing option and did not automatically result in your original photo from being overwritten. But now, the photo will be automatically saved (causing a loss in quality in the case of lossy-compressed file formats like JPG); if you don't want the file saved you are SOL...you have to go fishing for the original in order to rescue it.

only if you close out, or whenever you do anything at all?

You can lock the file if you will be playing with it. Or you can go back to the version you wanted. But yeah, that could be annoying. Send feedback to apple and ask for an off switch.

It doesn't exist yet.

Many of the apps have an off switch in their prefs.
