Yes it is the mystery of exploding German frogs! Maybe they are swelling with pride, either way they can't stop, and then magically explode! So, beware - and don't go kissing any of them thar exploding frogs.

Very sad, certainly not an easy way to die. Hopefully they will find the cause soon. Can always hope that finding the cause will lead to other improvements.

Exlpoding frogs would be caused by a build up of gastric juices. It would happen to humans if they did not break wind or belch! Similar things happen to large animals after they die. I remember a story of a whale that exploded in the middle of Tokyo! It was found dead on the beach and they wanted to take it to a marine biology lab for tests. On the way it started to decompose internally and burst sending whale over 100m around the centre of Tokyo!

Oddly it doesn't animate in Preview but if you open it with Safari it'll work fine.

gee, no toads exploded. people are so naive.

there are thousands of toads in that pond and they inflated themselves during mating season to appear larger and do their sound. local crows have figured out that they can easily pick the livers out of this toads. a couple of crows can pick hundreds of toads to death, eat their livers and the mess they leave behind looks like an exploded frog. thats all the mystery there is.

but i like the exploding head thing. can somebody of you pro's transfer that to the ceo of M$ or Ballmer or Saddam? we could do a contest who finds the head that everybody would like to see explode?

interesting theory, but it depens on if crows are native/active in that area of Germany, it could be a result of other things as well dont forget.....

as far as i understand the report, it's not a theory. they sent the toads, watersamples and what not to different labs. they even put fish and insects in the pond that should indicate toxins. they did full bacteriological analysis like they do for food. then they finally contacted a zoologist who actually looked at the toads and found the missing livers and the signs of the crow picks. they could have done that right away and saved lots of money.......

At the risk of having this moved to the political forum, the reason they give is to hide the plague that has been accidentaly released in Europe by erant US weapons experts. Soon everyone everywhere will swell and pop!
