Just checked the Apple store and was looking at the options for hard drives for the base 12" ibook. I don't remember being able to upgrade to an 80G hd. But it's an option now.
Is this new?

The 12" Powerbooks have been shipping with 80 GB hard drives for some time! I bought mine in September 2004, and ordered the 80GB drive. So to answer your question politely: Certainly, the opportunity has been apparent to the watchful eye for quite some time! Greetz from "old Europe"!

Yes, but not for the iBooks. :( I think it came in one of the recent updates...but definitely no, you were not always able to. It was 30/40/60 at launch.

Yeah, mkrishnan's on the ball, it was the last update. Of course, that's just for the Apple Store, I've got an 80 gig hard drive in my 800MHz G4 iBook.

It's not that new, it's been there since they were last updated. I remember looking at upgrading to a 40GB drive, and the option was not there. 30, 60, and 80 were it. I assume it'll be 40, 60, and 80 in the next version.

In 2003, when I got my iB G3 900Mhz the biggest HD you can get was 60G.
They were able to go bigger because of the G4 processor... I think --- ;)
