View Full Version : Faulty SSD?

My system has been doing great with the OCZ Vertex 2. However, since last night, I've had a major problem with it. The computer would "beach ball" after five minutes of activity. Windows, which is installed on the same drive, has an instant BSOD and restarts after five minutes.

So I booted up my Mac with the HDD in slot two. I was in the progress of "repairing" the SSD, when it randomly vanishes after five minutes.

I know OCZ has had reliability issues, so I suppose the risk didn't pay off here. Is there a way I could "repair" the SSD, or will I have to return it? And how do I do that?

Anything showing up in Console?

It could be the drive itself, as you said - I'd contact OCZ.

I've not had a good experience with OCZ, I've had about 5 SSD failures in less than 5 months with OCZ drives.

I just assume you had a very good TM backup. Might good to return it and get a replacement.

The good news is, yes, I have a time machine backup of my system. The bad news, is that it's awkward at best to reboot a system, as the Time Machine has around 4 drives backed up. Oh well...

I had exactly the same issues with an OCZ Vertex 2 in my Mac Pro. Fortunately for me I was only using the drive to test Lion at the time. I returned the it to the store where I bought it and purchased a Samsung 470

The Samsung 470 is meant to be very stable and reliable.

My Vertex2 120Gb has been behaving flawlessly since purchase around a year ago and has survived being moved between two machines, a couple of firmware updates and a complete wipe and reinstall when Lion arrived. Sorry to hear you have had trouble but I would suggest replacement under the warranty.

The SSD is done. Send it back to OCZ and you'll get a new one. Typical example of the BSOD-error/fault, happens to about 30% of sandforce SSD's within less then a year.

I'd advise to stay away from the sandforce controller, until it proves more reliable.

30%? Citation please. If they had a 30% returns rate they would not be able to trade.

I'll see if I can get ahold of an Intel SSD. It was my original SSD of choice in the first place. Thanks guys. :/
