In Snow Leopard, ejecting an external hard drive powered it down after unmounting. On Lion, the drive is unmounted but the drive is not powered down. Plugging it out results in a sudden loss of power to the drive. I doubt it causes damage to new drives thanks to built-in emergency parking of the head, but why rely on this mechanism at all. Is there any way to overcome this?
