I don't know if this is just a UK thing or what, but Apple really should have thought about what they were saying when they issued this...oh and delete this if its to vulgar please (no offence is meant as anyone can access this )

"Finger" is a unix command line tool to my (limited) knowledge. They didn't choose the name.

Its the old unix command. Don't blame Apple. People would complain if they changed it.

Its an old old joke. You finger someone to find out if they are online. I often heard in the lab and occasionally said "I was waiting for my girlfriend to show up, so i fingered her until she came."

Blissfully married to a she-geek.

That's great. :D

I'd say they should change their sentence structure but I can't think of an alternative and to be honest, that's pretty damn funny.

I remember learning that command - in a shell prompt on a unix workstation in school in the late 80s - and thinking how damn funny it was....would love to know how they came up with that name, though.

Hahaha. Yes, I'm typing dead. No, not literally. But I almost died laughing. I am so immature.

would love to know how they came up with that name, though.Unix designers picked it for its American slang meaning:Finger - verb - slang: To inform on. To designate, especially as an intended victim.since the purpose was to identify another Unix user.

Cross reference: Microsoft's multiple cultural blunders

More about this topic:

1. I noticed that the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=finger&r=f) has a recently added definition of finger: "Something often found in Wendy's Chili." Huh? Often!?!?

2. I picked up the Los Angeles Times from the other day and was reading an article about law enforcement's success against a dying breed: old-fashioned U.S. mobsters. Something caught my eye... twice. A lot of fingers in the article!
