how long does a panther to tiger upgrade take?

I have an imac 20' with a 4X DVDR. GB ram. any insight?

My Tiger is due tomorrow according to FedEX, but I have read here and on other forums the install takes about 1 hr, but your milage may vary 🙂

I've seen several reviews saying about an hour.

BUT:

* Make a full backup before any major OS upgrade... and that takes time.

* Spotlight indexing continues in the background for a long time after installation. It doesn't slow anything down, but you won't get to try Spotlight right after installing.

Thanks for you insight on install time . I need to install on multiple machines, in a limited amount of time.

Perhaps burning it may be faster...
anyone have any idea how much space the os takes on the DVD?

Is it 2 DVD's?
anyone have an idea how long a rip/burn on a 4X DVDR would be?

I did the "upgrade" on my iMac (see sig) and it took between 15-20 minutes to install. Spotlight indexing took about 15 minutes.

It took me about 40 mins a 12 PB. Rev A. I just did the upgrade.

Took about 20-35... g4s more.. g5s less. It was the easiest upgrade yet

Theoretically, if you need to install in a rush, you could keep the install volume on an external hard disk (such as an iPod). Firewire transfer rates are faster than optical transfer rates. Check the stickied thread in this forum to see how to do that.

Scrap the languages

I ended up installing three times (Note: scrap any Mail plug-ins before the install, and do an archive and install rather than an upgrade. And back everything up!), and I finally noticed on the third install that there is an option to not install all the languages (I don't know if this was always there on previous installs), but just installing 1 language cut the install time in half (about 15 min) and saved a gig of space.
