View Full Version : So how did you find MacRumors in the first place?

One thing that always intrigued me is the fact the we constantly get people who apparently just got a Mac, or just had a problem with their Mac, and turned to this site for help. Which is fantastic.
But what I've always wondered is, how did they find us, in some cases very quickly? I stumbled upon the site a year or so ago on accident, really, and lurked for awhile, but then was prompted by my brother to come to the forums. Much so some of your chagrin, I'm sure, I've stayed.
So my question is - how did you happen to become a card-carrying member of the MacRumors community? Were you referred? Did you do a search for a problem and this popped up? Just curious.

Googled 'Mac Forums'
Lurked for a long time, was slightly intimidated by certain members who seem to have moved on. Read a lot, didn't bother registering until I had a problem to post & enquire about. Over time, discovered the diversity and broadness of the members' interests -- unlike many tech forums, this one has really interesting side-topics and thoughtful posts.

I don't really remember. Probably through Macworld/maccentral. Someone must have put up a link in the Maccentral (now Macworld news) forums, and I hopped over here. I registered when I wanted to make a post on one of the forum topics, and here I am.

I was at apple.com on the download page. I was looking at a piece of software that syncs text from different web-sites to the iPod. There was a screen shot of the software showing a list of web-sites that you could put on your iPod. MacRumors was on the list, and i was intrigued by the name, so I went to MacRumors.com. That was about one year ago.

I've often thought this. I don't understand why someone who just bought a Mac would come to a site named MacRumors for help. Unless somehow "Rumors" can be confused with "Help"...
I mean it's great that they come here for help, but I don't understand it.
Anyway, I found this site when I was wondering what Apple had in the works and wanted some rumors about what was coming. So I googled "mac rumors" and lo and behold, MacRumors. :D

I remember checking out the site a few times as far back as 2001, but I didn't start lurking on the forums until the summer of 2003, when I was planning to buy a Powermac G5.
I ended up having to spend my savings on my college education though, so no G5, but I did keep reading the site. It seemed like a decent place with a welcome lack of 1337-speaking teenagers/haxors/spammers, so I eventually joined and started posting during lulls at work.

A long time ago I found Macrumors through the good people at 91FM Philadelphia. They had a show called the CompuDudes who offered free tech support on the air. They had a news section in their program and they mentioned Macrumors in reference to a rumor related to the G4 Cube. I logged on using my Performa 6300, found the forums and 4 years later the rest is history.

Its odd, but back in the day (a year ago or so) when TechTV was good, MacRumors was featured on The Screen Savers... and I began "Lurking" the site - and then new PowerBooks (Rev C) came out and I wanted them so I went on the web and lurked here more and then I registered.

About two years ago (winter 2002/3), when my dear old Pismo's battery was utterly dead, and I started looking for a replacement, and at one point I stumbled upon Mac Rumors, or to be specific, Mac Rumor's Buyer's Guide. I started lurking, included the front page (and later RSS feed) in my daily news round.
Then just over a year ago (March 2004) i figured out I actually had something to contribute to a thread (cannot remember which or what it was about) and after taking the plunge I spend more and more time here... bordering on too much time, lately... ;)
(Got my current iBook G4 Nov 2003, and the Pismo is still going strong and is used every day by my girlfriend without any battery change, by the way)

Googled 'Mac Forums'
I did something similar, although I'm not sure what I googled exactly. But MR came up high on the list, or at the top, and I was impressed by the site layout, by the quality of the forums, and most by the atmosphere of the community. The last is much more than half of what I wanted in getting a Mac, so in that sense, MR really made me switch. The other half was the fact that, since OS X came out and matured a wee lil' bit, it looked like an opportunity to have "fun" using a computer again, and to learn about Unix. I found Win95 fun, believe it or not, when it first supplanted 3.1, but I didn't have this experience with subsequent versions, and I needed a change....

I mean it's great that they come here for help, but I don't understand it.
You'd be surprised how many times the forum archives pop up for a search on anything mac related, or a specific problem. For example (completely random example I came up with)
http://www.google.com/search?q=powermac+g5+won't+start+up
Although that particular page isn't really related to the search, people may click on it regardless.

Through http://www.rumortracker.com/
This site tracks some of the Mac rumor pages and gives a summary of what each of them are saying. It has not been updated in sometime, it is still leading on an article on jaguar!
It used to be great and I checked it a couple of times a day. In the end I always found myself clicking on the macrumours link so just bookmarked that one!

I've been posting slow and steady since JUNE of 2001. Weren't nearly as many sites around then. Used to get this place and MacOSRumors mixed up...
Nice forum here. Very few A-holes. Lots of bright people.. kind people.
Started posting a lot more once I got banned from the Apple.com discussion forums... oops! Not much room for humor there when OSX was in its infancy..

I sought out a good rumor site when I was planning my biggest Mac purchase ever - a top of the line Power Mac. Like many people, I didn't want to buy a system just before a replacement line was announced. I've been burned in the past by that. After some comparisons I decided that MacRumors was the best of the sites, and the rest is history.

I found MacRumors back in the Spring of 2002. I was searching for OS X uodate news and I found the site. I mostly read posts for a while before registering. And even then I did not post much. After three years I still don't have 500 posts so that reflects my participation.. although I've been posting (and rocking the boat :p) a little more lately.
When I first started here, Arn would actually participate in many of the threads... he responded to one of my early posts and I thought it was cool that the forums "God" had responded to my post.
There was also a guy here named AlphaTech that was a bit gruff but was a wealth of information and was always helping people out...
Anyway. Fast forward a few hundred moons and here I am on April 29 with NO TIGER. Damn!

Man, it was years ago. I googled something Mac-related and it came up. It was back in 2000 when I was beginning to consider getting an iMac. Once the ice-Book came out, I had to get one. I've been pleased ever since.

I found MacRumors because most of the rumors that As The Apple Turns (which I've been a fan of 1997) would link to were on MacRumors, so after lurking for a couple years, I finally registered and made my first post in Jan of 2003. It only took me 2 years and 2 months to get 500 posts, and most people here still don't know who I am.

It's only been about a year, but I don't remember why I signed up here :o (I actually lurked for a while before signing up.). I've been a long-time member of Apple's discussion boards, so I didn't come here looking for tech help. I somehow got addicted to the juicy rumors and bleeding-edge Apple update news stories.

I wanted to know when the G5 Powebooks were coming during August of 2002. So I google searched it, which led me to one of the MANY macrumors threads about G5 PBs. So many wonderful discussions!
As of today, I am still waiting for the G5 PB...

A good friend passed the URL along to me - actually, it was one of the friends who was influential in me purchasing my first Mac in the first place! I was on MacRumors for a good 6 months or so before I bought my first Mac and found it to be an amazing site with a wealth of information that helped me research my purchase and understand more about Macs - and I still find it extremely useful to this day.

I found the url in the back of a mac book ( I don't remember which one) it was a list of mac related sites. I registered once to check it out, then forgot my screen name, so I registered again when I was forced to in jan '04 in order to read the forums.
I have found the most helpful people in world here. It's a great community and the enthusiasm here for macs got me more excited about the platform and I keep coming back(mostly to lurk)

I'm sure it was over 18 months ago that I began lurking on MacRumors. Google searched Apple and Macintosh before I settled into daily lurking. I was getting interested in Apple computers, as was a friend, and we both made our purchases last July. He bought a 15" Powerbook and I bought a 14" iBook. We're both loving them still...I think there's another thread about giddiness?!!
I really enjoy the diverse conversation and information sharing that goes on here.

Well I do remember coming across threads from here through google quite a few times before I joined. Answered several of my questions that way. I just looked at my posts, and found that my first one was about zooming with apple-opt-+ Doesn't seem like a very memorable first post, but I've had better ones since!
Definitely glad I've become a part of this community. I'd have to say we have one of the best communities out there (at least in our category). I have been impressed numerous times with the etiquette of the MR members. Even if things get blown out of proportion or some nasty exchanges take place, 90% of the time, people appologise and things go back to 'normal' A group of grade A people we have here.

Mine has been a long and meandering journey.
I actually started over at MacAddict -- my profile says June 9, 2000. Some time in 2002, a number of us from MAF migrated to another forum, and I spent about a year there, until I got tired of one of the members who was something of a jerk. When he started acting that way with me, and absent any moderator intervention, I left.
I Googled "Mac forums", and came across this place, along with clubhouse 54 and a few others. I lurked for a while at each, but it was easy to see that this was the most interesting, the best-moderated, and had an international flavor as well.
Anyway, it's over a year later, and while I still peek in at MAF every once in awhile, I feel I've found my home here.

I found these forums back on '02 I think when looking for the latest Powermac news. I never did buy one but stuck around on the forums for awhile and posted my ass off for a few months. I slowed down eventually but not before I became the top poster without a Mac. ;) I got one eventually but my posting has reduced as of late, mostly due to the lack of Mac (again) and the IRC channel which has somehow sucked me in and won't let me out. I still visit the site pretty much every day but I only post when I have something to add really anymore.

I was reading a PowerBook review in a graphics magazine - Computer Arts I think - and the review said to come here for more info. Hell of a compliment for the site that they didn't suggest apple.com; guess they thought readers would get better info and opinion here. Still seems strange thinking about it now... any of the old school used to write for CA?
Anyway - I was thinking of buying a PB at the time, so I came here, liked what I found and stuck around.

One day *quotes 50 Cent*, I pulled up in the coupe, like Whoa! Next thing you know, I'm in the G5 truck! :D
I first came here in the summer 2004 when I was trying to find out what Mac to get. And so I've been lurking away for a while and everyone seemed intelligent, and nice, and so slowly I've been posting more and more.
Conversely, at the start of last year, I was looking for a new bike, and lurked on a bike forum for a while. They were quite funny but totally unwelcoming and a bit immature. This is coming from a girl who thinks farts are funny, by the way.
Therefore I posted about twice there, and have posted round about 100 here. Go figure. MacRumors is A Good Thing ™
