View Full Version : Official Apple Store Tiger Event Thread

Mr. Anderson
Apr 29, 2005, 04:08 PM
Ok, this thread is for people who are going to be at the store tonight to post what's going on for the rest of us who aren't there.

If you're in line outside the store, post here as well.

If you can use a camera and post a pic, that'd be great!

And if someone could find out if the iMacs, iBooks, Mac Minis and Power Books are coming preinstalled with Tiger that would cool.

Only post here if you're at the store OR if you have a question you'd like answered by someone at a store

Thanks,

D

I am at the tysons corner store in Virginia... Not much going on at the moment. Gutted though, my iBook refuses to boot up now!

Am actually typing on a dual 2.7 with 2.5 gig or ram with the 30" display with Tiger!

So is there a line for the Tiger Event outside the store yet? And is there any indication that they will be having a 10% off on new computer bought tonigh?

I'm at the Victoria Gardens store. Its 1:41pm here... And the store isn't busy at all. I've been here since 7am. Lots of fun. The employees have said that they would just toss in a Tiger DVD with any system purchased after 6pm. Anything before that has to go through the mail in program.

london was good, I was sixth in line and used my discount card which made tiger a bit cheaper. very busy though.

There was no queue in London until after 4.30pm. I suspect this is because most of this who ended up in the queue then had spent the time inside the store playing with Tiger since it was already installed on their Macs.

After 4.30, the line grew rapidly and made it all the way around the corner down towards the square. Lots of attention garnered from the general public!Like the grand opening, all the staff gathered around the entrance and up the staircase and applauded everyone coming in. Boxes of Tiger were displayed all over the store! Two girls at the door handed each person a scratchcard as they walked in.

The lines for buying Tiger were enormous (thankfully, I was number 8!) in the store - zig zagging across the back of the store where the cash registers were 3 times and all the way back to the front of the store again. The line upstairs wasn't a lot shorter!

There was no standard 10% off unless you got that on your scratchcard.

I've already got Tiger, but I want to know what the door prizes are, if any. AppleInsider mentioned something about t-shirts being shipped to the stores.

See http://images.apple.com/retail/events/tiger/prize_discount_exhibit.pdf for a complete list of prizes and odds. It's weird how they list a PowerBook 15", but it's retail value is $1499, which is the price of the low end PowerBook 12".

No, it just looks like not all stores are having the same distribution or same number of prizes. If a store isn't listed, there's a list for "all other stores" at the very end.

Edit: ie. North Michigan Ave in Chicago will have 5500 scratch-its, while a smaller store that's not on the list will have 1000 scratch-its.

It looks like every card will be a winner, mostly either an iTMS code or 10% discount. Odds of getting which one will vary from store to store. There will also be a handful of assorted products (PowerBook [1], iPod photo 30GB [2 or 4], iPod mini 6GB [2 or 4], iPod shuffle 1GB [8 or 10], iSight [2 or 4], AirPort Express [2 or 4], iWork [5], and JBL Creature II speakers [4 or 6]). North Michigan Ave, The Grove, San Francisco, CambridgeSide, SoHo, and UTC are the stores which will have the higher numbers.

All scratch-its need to be redeemed at the store before it closes tonight at midnight, except for the iTMS codes, which expire on June 25, 2005.

Edit: I'm just reading off of http://www.apple.com/retail/events/tiger/terms.html - I have no "inside knowledge"!

Back from the Apple Store Bullring Birmingham.
IT WAS GREAT! ! !
I won 10% off and saw 2 people win iPods whilst I was there, and the person won a Powerbook whilst I was there - they couldn't talk from shock ! Was sooo jealous!
Anyway, the store itself is great as was the opening itself, going to upload my 1/2 images from the queue in a bit.

TO ANYONE STILL AT BULLRING STORE : How is the queue now, is it still busy??? (1 Hour to midnight here)

Spotlight and Safari are the hits. About 30 people in the store, no waiting.
DashBoard is unable to find the internet here. Can't change the prefs for location or get any information in the Weather Widget. No one seems to know anything about it. Safari seems twice as fast. iChat video is strong. Looks like Spotlight will replace LaunchBar.

I asked a question on when can we expect to see Mac Mini supporting CI. And I was told that CI was created mainly for the pro apps (like motion).

Oh one more thing. When I tried to play back H.264 movie from Apple website, my PB 1.33Ghz barely played it back, activity monitor was showing like 60%-80% pracessor usage. :(

Just entered the Apple store at the Alderwood Mall, Lynwood Wa.

I won a free song. Was hoping for an Airport base station or JBL speaker. Oh well. Can't complain.

Can't post any pics as no camera on hand. There was about 5 people when I arrived about 40 minutes till opening. Decided to wander around and returned back at about 15-20 minutes before opening and 30-40 people were there. Should've learned my lesson about taking advantage at the line but I never do. I was already drizzling when I got there.

OK, checked it out:

iMac G5 20" 1.8GHz 2Gig RAM

PB 17" !GHz 1 Gig RAM & 23" studio Display

DSL Airport Extreme

Both playing at full screen... different trailers

The problem is not with the computers-- it is with the downlload speed. The downloads can't keep ahead of the QT7 player.

Once a sufficient amount of the tyrailer is downloaded, both computers play it perfectly!

It would be nice if you could send the sound to your stereo via airport extreme ala iTunes.

(wait 'til Apple includes a hardware chip to offload the h264 decoding -- the CPU won't even flinch. There are several chips (including the CELL) available later this year)

I was at a mall location, and we had a ton of people walking up asking what all the commotion was about. It was fun to see the looks on their faces when we told them Apple was releasing a new OS. "You're waiting in a line this long for that?" We didn't tell them there were prizes.

I actually went back a second time about 2 hours later, and they still had cards (no lines) but still didn't win anything :(

But we do have 4 songs now.

Anyone go over to the Cambridgeside Store? - I remember last year for Panther the line wrapped around the entire mall. -- I had originally ordered Tiger w. the edu discount online April 13th. -- April 23rd. the Charge was refunded back to my Credit Card for some odd reason. -- Oh well PayDay is Sunday, so I'll get my copy on Monday.

Pretty weak (Houston Galleria), at least my wife and I both won an itunes song. I was miffed that they wouldn't give me my corporate discount, so I left and ordered Tiger online lol. If I'd have known that, I would have ordered it earlier and already had it. Darn apple! ;)

Oh boy. A free itunes song. I could have bought a case of pepsi for that, and wouldn't have had to wait in line for an hour. Overall I'm pretty disappointed with the launch party. The line was massive though, so I guess that counts for something. I'm anxiously awaiting the BTO dual 2.0 powermac I ordered online, and the yummy 23" screen to go along with it.

I was at the Tiger premiere event at Apple Centre Newfarm (Brisbane): there was a 30 minute demo on Tiger (mainly Spotlight and Dashboard) and about 20-25 people in attendance (not a very big store - well not like the one I went to in Phoenix while I was in the States). They had some nibblies (cheese platter and chips etc) and a salesperson dressed up in a tiger suit. They had their iChat AV conferenced with other stores down south (eg Melbourne). No discounts though and no door prize, except a raffle for the first-100 to purchase Tiger. The prize is $199-worth of store credit ("Get your Tiger for free"???). I was sort of disappointed :(

Edit: I asked and they said that other Macs purchased after last night will include Tiger pre-installed. One of the salespersons said they are heaving a lot of trouble getting iMacs in (esp. the 17" one) so they are guessing that something is about to happen. But they don't know more than we do.

Last year when I was in line for Panther -- a bunch of people kept coming up to us in line and we said that apple's realeasing there new OS one lady said "OS XI?" we all laughed and said "no 10.3" she just rolled her eyes and walked away rather quickly. :)

Was in the area with my son (he's 4) so we got in line for the Towson store around 4.50p. There were 7 people in front of us, so I was hopeful we'd get some sort of freebie. There were about 150 folks in line by 6.00p.
Pretty anti-climatic "event." Scratch off was for a free iTunes song (woo-hoo), and there were no freebies for the first in line. They wouldn't even give a scratch off to my son, even though he waited in line with everyone else. So much for the cute factor working its magic.

Around 5.20p, an employee came out to the queue with a video cam, then another one ran out dressed in a Tigger costume with a black Apple shirt and a Shuffle, trying to pump up the crowd. Maybe my boy will be on the web, since they filmed him high-fiving the "Tiger."

Overall, today was a disappointment. My copy of Tiger (ordered day one) is not going to arrrive until Monday, so I didn't buy one tonight. I didn't get a 10% off coupon, so I didn't buy anything else at the store. I almost got a shuffle anyway, but the line was ridiculously long. I let my boy play on the iMacs for 15 minutes, and we were outta there by 6.20p.

I had the apple store at the mall of america's ichat name on my buddy list from when my brother called from there a while back. I just tried it and someone answered, so at least I was able to make it to a store via ichat, the store employee wouldn't give me a scratch off though, said I had to be able redeem tonight, but I am 5 hours away. It was worth a try though.

I was at the Apple store in Novi, Michigan - mall location. I pre-ordered Tiger and received it today, but i was going to visit a friend and the mall was on the way... how convenient. :)

I arrived about 6:15 waited in line for about 10 minutes. I did not mind waiting because it was fun to watch all the GAP shoppers in the mall walk by and wonder what was going on. They looked so perplexed and several commented "should we go in?" even before knowing what was happening. There were a lot of people wanting to get in the Apple store, so they started to think they should go in too! I love group think - very fun to watch. A few asked what was going on and we'd tell them Apple was releasing a new OS. They would nod and continue walking with the same perplexed looked they had when first saw the line. :)

I got my scratchy and won my song, no PB, no iPod... oh well. I played with a PM a litlte bit with Dashboard, Spotlight and Automator. Then, I headed out. It was uneventul mostly but with only 1000 scratchies, the odds for a nice prize were better than most drawings/contests so I figured I'd give it a whirl.

I went to the Menlo Park Mall Apple Store in Edison, NJ.

The line wasn't bad at all and we were in the store in less than 10 minutes. Me and my brother both got free iTunes songs and one of the people in front of me won a 15" PowerBook! The people in the store were all clapping and cheering. I didn't buy anything since I got Tiger online via Apple, but I got two free iTunes songs and every Apple flyer I could get my hands on.

Attached to this are a scan of the Tiger flyer (Front and Back) and a Scratch off card scanned in (And no you can't see my iTunes Free Song code!) :D

It was fun, not as fun as Panther was but, this was still pretty cool. I got to play with the 30 inch screen so that was fun. The guy working there mentioned that AcuWeather.com went down so the widgets couldn't show the weather. Also he said the HD QuickTime movie server is being hammered and that even at the store they were having a bit of trouble downloading movies. I wanted to fill the 30" screen with a Star Wars trailer but it would have probably been pixelated on that massive screen. Plus the guy was 'guarding it' hehe. Well again, it was fun but I liked the Panther party better... (Looks at Dog Tags) ;)

Hey PowerMac666, I was right ahead of you! I knew I should have worn a MacRumors T-Shirt or something. Don't know if you'll remember me, but I was one of the three geeky college kids at the front of the line (we were 3rd, 4th, and 5th in line) with our digital cameras out taking ridiculous and most likely somewhat obnoxious photos. The Philipino kid was my friend Chuck, the short, bearded fellow was Justin, and I was the somewhat taller kid with huge ears and way too much hair. We were a wonderful sight, really.

Anyway, just thought that was pretty cool! I'd agree that it was a bit of a disappointment. I luckily got one of the 10% off things, but that only goes so far, and I'm not exactly in the market for something so expensive that it would make a difference. I would have liked a T-Shirt or a lucky bag...

Mark

Cool. I do remember you guys. You were taking pictures of the Apple employees taking pictures of us. I don't think my boy made it far enough up the line to harrass you guys:p Did you hang out long enough to see if anyone won anything good?

Just got back from Apple store. We were there at 5:00 and about 15 to 20 people in line. By the time they opened the doors the line was around the corner and down the block. We were with the first group to be let in and all of the employees were lined along the store cheering and clapping. They gave out scratch-off tickets. My son and his friend won itunes songs and I won 10% off any purchase so I used it on what they called the "Ultimate Mac Mini". (1.42GHz/512/80/SuperDrive/Bluetooth/Airport) they gave me a Tiger DVD to upgrade. Not a bad night because I was going to buy a mini soon and was happy to get the discount. I also saw two people win ipods right after we went in. :)

Hey all!

I was at Easton tonight, from approx. 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. While I was there a lady who walked in at 7:30 won a PowerBook (you should have heard the screaming). I was insanely jealous - mainly because I only got a free iTMS song.

Easton was packed ALL NIGHT LONG, and appeared to be doing great business.

Tiger was NOT coming preinstalled, but was being bundled with all computers (taped to the outside of the boxes).

Beginning on Sunday at 8 am, anyone who bought Tiger who will be visiting Easton is eligible for a 1-hour meeting with a Mac Specialist to learn about Tiger or have their system optimized for Tiger.

All in all - good night. Would have been great if I would have been just 30 minutes later!

The release party was fairly uneventful for me as well. I was at the King of Prussia Mall store. I got there at about 5:50, and someone told me they counted something like 164 people in line. I thought I was going to have to wait for over an hour, and considsidered leaving the line to walk around the mall since I was only interested in the scratch offs. However, once the store opened, the line went super quick as many people were just scratching off and leaving. We were in within 15 mins, won an Itunes Song and a 10% off coupon, played around with some stuff, and made our exit.

was anyone else at the KOP mall store?

I drove out to go to a home store that my wife wanted to go to in South Jersey, I figured that it's right near the, The Promenade, sight of an Apple store, so I'll stop by. I won a song, my wife, who didn't even come in, but instead, stayed in the car, got a card delivered to her by the door guy (we were parked in the spot right outside the door), and she won a 1gb Shuffle. I lost my iPod 2 days ago on the subway, it made me a little bit happier.

BTW there was no line at 9pm and bust but not too crowded inside.

I thought I'd be too late after class let out, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Went to the Stoneridge store in Pleasanton, CA around 9:45 and won a shuffle! Exactly what I wanted. A number of people that went around that same time won stuff too - another shuffle, airport express, iwork, and the 30gig ipod. When it rains it pours I guess. I'm stoked.

At The Grove, the flagship Apple Store in Los Angeles, the demos were given by Mike Shebanek, Mac OS X Product Marketing Manager. Here (http://www.wap.org/tours/imac/default.html) is an old photo of him from the early days of iMacs.

Tonite he showed Spotlight, then Dashboard, then joked that there were still 198 more features to show.

After his talk, he posed with the Apple fan who was first in line when the store opened for the Tiger release at 6pm. But it wasn't a person, it was a stuffed tiger named QuickBite! Here are photos of QuickBite at the front of the line and QuickBite with Mike Shebanek inside the store.

I was at Tyson's Corner in Virginia.

My scratcher was a free iTune. I was in line in front of two Deaf people, one of whom kindly gave me his free iTune.

While in line to buy Tiger (for work, I have my own copy coming from Amazon with big discount and a coupon), a guy next to me didn't have a use for his 10% off card, so he gave THAT to me. I promptly used it to buy a clip for my shuffle and some screen cleaning stuff. I clutched my wallet tightly lest I commence wildly spending money I didn't have.

It was pretty clear that there was no real advantage to having been on line early. Next time I'll know better.

The funniest part of the Tiger demo was when the Apple presenter tried to show three-way video iChat. Two Apple employees were supposed to be on iSights downstairs while the presenter using the big screen upstairs talked to them. But the employees downstairs were distracted by customers so other customers who happened to be looking at the PowerBooks ended up being on camera, not realizing their live images were on a giant screen upstairs with an audience watching. One lady saw her own image at the bottom of the iChat window and did a bit of mugging. Upstairs, we all laughed. The presenter finally gave up before something more embarrassing happened on camera. :)

Well this is offically my first time using my new 17"PB. I went to the Apple Store in Legacy Village (Cleveland) and won a 1GB iPod Shuffle and decided to upgrade to the 17" from the 15" 1.25. Anyways it was super packed all night long and they were selling computers like CRAZY!! One guy bought 3 completely maxed out dual 2.7 G5s. But for the most part there were a lot of portables and a lot of LCDs going out the door with them. Great day for Apple i'm sure. Anyways i thought it'd be cool to break this bad boy in on MacRumors. Have a good night you guys!

I was at the new Apple store opening at the Bullring, Birmingham last night. I was stuck at work and couldn't get there untill about 6.45 and the queue was incredible! It took me an hour and a half to get in and it was absolutely packed. Still it was great fun, with several really enthusiastic American and British staff out the front, cheering everone who won on the scratchcards (I got a 10% discount) and anyone who left with a new computer. I also got a free t shirt and I've got everthing crossed that I win the sweepstake competition they were running. As I had the discount I decided to treat myself to a new external hard drive as well as Tiger (not much of an excuse, but who cares?). Tiger is now installed and running perfectly, well worth going!

Heya guys, I went to the Bullring opening also, and thought it was pretty cool, not as mental as Regent's Street, but still, very cool. Tiger is lush and I love it to bits already! I took a bunch of photos, check them out here:

http://homepage.mac.com/joshlemonlyman/PhotoAlbum18.html

On a different note, I find it amazing that people winge about lack of giveaways (there were huge numbers of things up for grabs) and remember Apple is a COMMERCIAL company (there is money to be made!).

Also, why so much whinging about non-apple mad fans winning stuff? Yeah, I know, I wish it had been me who won the powerbook also, but still, isn't it good that the uninitiated get a go?! Thats how converts are won!

Anyways, thats my two pennies worth.

Gnight!

I was at the Nagoya Sakae store for their event. My friend and I both got 10% off coupons which we couldn't use on Tiger
I asked if I could take pictures and the store manager said "No" rudely. Around us were a bunch of other customers taking photos with their mobile phones and no one saying anything to them.
I was in and out in less than 15 minutes; highly disappointing.

Well, since I was at the Panther opening, I thought i'd want to be there for Tiger night. When I was at the store last week, they said that they expected 4 times the amount of people for Tiger as there was for Panther, and to get there by 3pm. I got to the apple store at 5pm, AND NO ONE WAS THERE...except a bouncer apple hired to guard the door. I almost thought I had the wrong night! So I got in line, plugged my ipod in, but really could not listen to it because the store kept playing "Eye of the Tiger" so loud. The line never got really that long....not nearly as long as the Panther line was. I think only about 1/4 the people were there last night compared to Panther.

I was a bit disappointed.....no t shirts, no dog tags.....no 10% off for everybody......cheaper feeling then Panther day was. I got a scratch off...won a song on itunes. The guy next to me (#2 in line) won creature speakers. I kid who just came in to buy an ipod, not knowing anything about the event WON an ipod....that was nice.

I did like the "mini-teachings" around the store on Tiger features...

I then left around 7pm, went out to eat, and came back, since by 8pm there were no lines at all, just like a normal Friday night at the apple store, (except for having ten times the employees there). I came back about 8:30pm, and the kid handing out the scratch offs, (he had a TON of them) says to me, " you were already here, you don't get one!" Oh well, a little power is a dangerous thing......

I did not buy tiger last night, because I plan on buying a new imac next week, when I expect the 2 gig imacs will finally come out, and i'll get Tiger that way.

All in all, I was impressed with Tiger, but not the event. Nothing special for being the first in line, etc.....next time i'll just go in whenever.

I was at the Apple Sagemore store, which is in Marlton, NJ. I got there at 5:40, and the line outside the door was about 50-60 peopel deep. The store is pretty small, so the spaces were kinda tight. Upon entering the doors, a man in a Safari hat greeeted you and gave you a scratch off card. I went in with my mom and dad hoping for a winning prize, I got a 10% off and 2 iTunes songs :) . The stores entire staff was there, helping people with questions about purchasing new iBooks, iMacs, and Mac Minis. For the more advanced, you could really just go up to many machine you wanted and tinker with the programs to your desire.

However, i overheard a conversation with an Apple employee that made a mistake with a customer. He kindly apologized (the woman didn't care at all) and stated, "honestly, this is the first time i got to use Tiger, so i'm, sorta guessing..." The employees were kind and new statistics as well as new features, but when it came down to actually using them, some were as clueless as the customers in some cases.

Non-Tiger apps and products they were quite knowledgeable on. The Power Mac 2.7ghz floor model was hooked up to the behemoth 30in. display, and always had a bubble of at least 10 people around it, as the demonstrator was showing the uses of an HD camera (jealousy) with Final Cut Pro HD.

We were really left alone to fiddle to our heart's content. We raced the mac mini against the Power Mac in speed of opening Adobe Photoshop, the PM tore the mini apart by a wopping 5 seconds... :D

I would like to point out however, the genius bar was closed and was used for sales only. A woman was trying to get her son's second iPod to work but was turned away at the door. The man kindly apologized but stated because of the magnitude of the event, they were forced to close it, and would be open tomorrow.

Overall it was a delightful release party. No free t-shirts or mouse pads that I saw, but iTunes songs for everyone is a much better gift. If you have the chance to go to the next release, go, you won't be disapointed. Anyone else at Sagemore, tell me ;) .

Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to make it out to the apple store but my local compusa was giving away a few 1gig shuffles that they will let you know if you won in an email. Plus they had a great double up deal where on most things if you bought something you got a second free guy in front of me got 2 dual 2.5's with external 300gig hds and final cut express hd. I'm kno the hard drive was free but obviously not the second 2.5

I went to CompUSA in Princeton NJ, and it was the biggest waste of my time. Started at 6pm, a single apple rep was in the middle of INSTALLING tiger on a single G5 computer. All other apple displays were running panther.

A total of 5 people standing around waiting for Tiger to install. One employee with a painted Tiger face complained to me how he was a hard-core PC user and was pissed that he was made to wear the face paint. One guy was dressed in a full tiger body suit, and played "Eye of the Tiger" on a boombox set on repeat for hours upon hours.

No door freebies, just a single raffle for a free ipod shuffle. By 7.30pm, Tiger was at 99% done installation, and crashed !!! The apple rep turns to the crowd (all five of us) and asks: "Uh...what should I do, install it on another computer or try it again on the G5 ?" He proceeded to try installing it again on the G5 from scratch, at this point I just left in disgust.

How about opening up a new powerbook that presumably has Tiger pre-installed? How about getting to work a bit earlier and pre-installing Tiger on all your machines on display? How about opening up more than 1 Tiger box and running some simultaneous installations on several machines? How about some freebies, at least a mousepad or t-shirt ?

On a high note, I left to go see Hitchhiker's Guide, which was better than I expected :)

I cried as I saw someone walk out with a Powerbook, and someone else with an iPod mini. Sigh...

Got some good pictures out of the launch, tho. Oh well. I hope the next release is A- more exciting, with more giveaways, and B- at a time when I'm home in NY, so I can go to a giant store like the SoHo one. THAT would be fun!

Yeah, you'd just have to park yourself outside the store with a sleeping bag the day before the release and stay there until the evening of the release if you didn't want to get in after everything was all gone.

I went to the Woodfield store party. I won an iTunes song, so whatever. I was hoping for something better (as were a ton of people) but I can't complain. I got to try out the iBooks and the Powerbooks since I rarely go to the mall anymore and decided which one I would rather get for college (the iBook). I saw someone win a shuffle, but that's all. I was considering coming back later and seeing if I could get another card and win something, but I didn't. And it was lame since there wasn't any really good give-aways other than the scratch-off cards. I was hoping for shirts or something else.

so let me get this straight.... apple gives out 1 powerbook, 6-10 ipods (ipods+shuffles), speakers, iwork, airport express... PER STORE... as compared to i believe a raffle for one prize among all the stores? or something with much less chances.... and people are upset? the chances of winning these things are slim, of course, they're pretty expensive prizes. theoretically i can understand the complaint of no 10% off everything, but considering that i saw a guy at the store i went to finding anyone who looked like they were about to buy and giving them a 10% card, and given that people on here have talked about others giving the discount cards away, i'd think that most anyone who bought big items could've gotten a discount one way or another...

i wish i'd won a powerbook too but i'm not going to cry that apple owed me something. it seemed that this year the resellers (and compusa) were the place to be if you wanted a free t shirt, key chain, etc.

also, i'm surprised to hear about people getting shot down so much on second scratch cards... i got 3 at one store (i was gone for about 45 minutes between 1 and 2, and then was outside the store for a few minutes and when i went back in they happened to change who was handing them out). just surprised that any salespeople would be quite so tough on it. of course, i was there well after initial rush so maybe that had something to do with it.

my own personal disappointment was them not having final cut (and studio) on sale in the store... had finally decided to take the plunge and use the 10% but then realized it wasn't on sale in store yet. oh well.

I liked the way the Apple employees cheered whenever somebody won one of the better prizes. I heard three or four cheers while I was in the store. Yeah, I was a little jealous, but I got what I went there for, and 10% off plus two free iTunes isn't bad just for showing up.

My wife and I both got 10% off coupons. Too bad we couldn't combine them to make a 20% off coupon! :) Since we only used one of them, I gave the other one to a man in line for the cash register.

I forgot to mention something my wife noticed at the store. Many of the Macs on display weren't done doing their Spotlight indexing. You could see the progress bar under Spotlight in the menu bar, saying "28% indexed..." and so on as it chugged away. I thought they had installed Tiger much earlier, but perhaps they installed it in the hour the store was closed from 5pm to 6pm. How long might it take to index?

Come to think of it, I thought they restored these store display Macs over their network, from a ready-to-go system image. Why did it have to do all that indexing machine by machine?

At the Buffalo store, all computers were running Tiger without problems, pretty much.
Some of the widgets in dashboard were not working quite right.....I think all those people playing with every mac there, plus the people on their network using their own powerbooks and ibooks at the same time put some stress on their network.
I'm not really bummed that all I got was a itunes song....not everyone could win a powerbook.......I was hoping that Apple released the new 2 gig imacs by last night. I'll be back there hopefully in a few days when they DO come out.

No one in NY went to SoHo or Westchester?

I took my teenage daughter and one of her friends to the Westchester store, just couldn't bring myself to go to SOHO on such a miserable night.

Got there at around 6:30 ...pretty long line (it's a relatively small store). The Ben and Jerry's crew were there dishing up free ice cream for those of us waiting.

Tons of Apple employees on hand--tons of black shirts. Tiger was up and running well, it was nice to wander around and try Tiger on the different setups, our Macs at home range from an iBook and a Mini (and a Cube!) to a Dual 2.5 PM, and I probably wouldn't hesitate to load Tiger on any of them.

The girls won iTunes songs and I got 10% off. While we were there someone won an Airport Express (and they clearly didn't know what it was  .

I only wish I could have used my EDU discount at the store to buy Tiger :( .

All in all it was fun ...our first Apple OS Party.

I was at the Woodfield Mall in Schaumberg (Chicago-area). This was my first Apple event to attend, and it was nice to be able to come to one.

I'm guessing that every scratch sticker was a winner. I won a free song. hey, it's something! Now, which song to buy in addition to all of my Pepsi caps winnings. A guy ahead of me in line won a 6GB iPod mini...one problem...the guy was deaf. No, I'm not joking. Murphy's Law is very twisted.

No T-shirts, though.

I have a copy of Tiger coming eventually. I was somewhat tempted to buy it in the Store, but eventually decided against it. Tiger certainly does have some nice features, but in many ways, it feels like the least "improved" upgrade in the Mac OS X line. I just hope that the new technologies don't quickly bump out Mac OS 10.3 and earlier versions too quickly. I'm still upgrading, of course, but Tiger didn't impress me nearly as much as I thought it would.

But I did make at least one purchase...bought a boxed copy of OmniWeb. Even the box was funny to read.

so let me get this straight.... apple gives out 1 powerbook, 6-10 ipods (ipods+shuffles), speakers, iwork, airport express... PER STORE... as compared to i believe a raffle for one prize among all the stores? or something with much less chances.... and people are upset?

I'm not disappointed that Apple gave out PowerBooks and iPods - oh no. I'm disappointed that I wasn't :30 later to win the PB ;-)

Easton was literally packed wall-to-wall all night and I had a good time. I wish they would have had little Spotlight keychains, or shirts, or something - but I'm happy I got to play with the new PowerMacs :-)

Something did seem to be missing last night though - the event didn't really want to make me buy Tiger. (Of course, not having a DVD drive on any of my Macs doesn't help that either...)

I hope for 10.5 they try to build more of an exciting atmosphere in the stores. The PBs, iPods, iTMS songs, 10% off helped... but once you were in, you could only play and marvel (and only for a little bit).

Just my $0.02

Apple has been posting photos from Tiger nite, but I found a page they have left broken. It's not linked to yet, but it's obviously intended to be, and I think somebody at Apple left work early and didn't finish the project.
Awww, man! I was fifth in line at the Ginza store and I can't see myself in any of those pics. I'll have to check the sites for some of the Japanese Mac magazines and see if I'm in any of theirs. :)

JT

I wanted free ice cream!

I live close to the Westchester Mall, thats why I asked.

Its a small store but its great, isn't it? It has a good smell to it.

The ben and jerrys was from the 4th floor, right? I WANTED SOME!!!!!

Im the 14 yr old in the Pooh costume, it was a great time, i was third in line and i met a lot of great friends (and connections) Although the lack of a tshirt, or dog tags was a tiny bit disappointing, i was in line for three hours and not being 18 i didnt even get a song, but thats okay, it was an excellent time. Ill be sure to be out there next release for more fun!

And I was at the Soho Apple Store with a line of hundreds!, i dont know a number for sure, but i would love to find out.

The staff cheered the first ten as we ran up the step, the energy was absolutly amazing, it was such fun. (check out the link, my name is richard hart)-Film Maker

DickArmAndHarT: heh. didn't know you went on macrumors. i was the kid with the 17 inch powerbook a couple of spots away from you. my mom ended up picking me up a scratch and win card, but it only contained an itunes song. oh well. wish i could've gotten one of those t-shirts the staff were wearing. they really should've given away something everybody could have gotten. all in all it was a great night and hope another release of OS X comes out soon :). Edit: I found out Tekserve was giving away Tiger watches to all participants. Oh well.

I would have edited my previous post twice, but it wouldn't let me, so i'll continue here.

It's amazing to see the apple store transform so quickly. also, don't know if any of you noticed, but apparently paris hilton showed up. a guy tried to backcut me but we called the apple bouncers. the guy made up some crap and said he was diabetic. they let him in last.

i was one of the 1st ten to go in and it was amazing. it was like a race to get to the top of the stairs and grab a copy of tiger. the whole place was madness. i thought that waiting outside for 3 hours would be boring, but it's not. it's actually fun. you meet new people and get a lot of attention. also: DickArmAndHarT, you're in Newsday. you were also on the apple site but they took it down and replaced it with some other pics.

Haven't read all the posts, sorry...but here in Japan they gave away a little black 'spotlight' torch keyring - quite cute and all. I will take a photo and post it soon.

I could not get to the Ginza Apple Store, just went to BicCamera (one of the largest electronics store groups in Japan) in Shinjuku as they have an official Apple section staffed with Apple people on weekends and BicCamera people during the week...very helpfull and full of Apple stuff.

I'm another powerbook winner.
I cried like a dweeb for an hour.

It was awesome. One of the clerks started a round of applause for me.

Oh, and I may be a macrumors forum noob, but not to mac... I didn't ask "what's a powerbook?" when I won it. :D

I was also at the Easton store, I got there at 6 I was near the middle of the line, which was reaching all the way to nearly the end of the street.

I also won a 1GB shuffle. So my night was complete. :D

We were in within 15 mins, won an Itunes Song and a 10% off coupon, played around with some stuff, and made our exit.

was anyone else at the KOP mall store?

..Yeah my one friend of mine and I were there. We showed up around 4:30, line was really light, won an iTune each. My friend saw some kid win an iPod but was told he was too young to claim the prize. KOP is pretty uneventful. The line seemed to get longer an hour or so later, stretching down the length of that wing.
