Appleinsider reports that Apple may have some more updates in the wings as early as this week.
According to the rumor site, Apple is expected to release (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1046) an updated version of iTunes (4.8) which will offer routine upgrades as well as "support for a new wave of international music stores". The software is expected as early as the first week of May.
As well, there are further hints (http://www.appleinsider.com/news.php?id=1047) at iMac G5 and eMac updates. The new systems are reported to be shipping to dealers this week. No word on iBook updates, however... which have also been anticipated.

Makes sense, but too bad they didn't do it last week. Anyone with Tiger: do a search for a country in Spotlight, and look for a .gif. Apparently they've included the iTMS flags with Tiger.

I actually found these playing around with iChat - seems they've put them on as little gifs to represent your country while chatting - Avatars for the chat rooms.
I don't think this has much to do with new iTMSs, which I'm sure are coming... crosses fingers for Australia, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden. Go you!

Yeah, I wouldn't think that their inclusion in Tiger has anything to do with their iTMS release, but it's nice to know that Apple has all the flags set to go. :D
I really hope they do another all-out country release like when they added some countries in Europe. That's always exciting!

An update to iTunes will likely also include the new CoreAudio Format that is included with Tiger. There is only one application that I know of that currently supports this format and that is AU Lab which is included in the developer tools installation.

i cant wait to see what they are gonna do with these new imacs, i need a new computer and really want to move to a G5 but the powermacs get too expensive, too quick, But you gotta admit, the price of the dual 2.0 is sweet, especially after the EDU markdown.
wish i could afford it at this moment

It all makes sense: new stores for new countries, and a matching new iTunes version. The big question is WHEN.

Why are iBook updates anticipated in the near future?
It seems to me that if they were updated before the next Powerbook updates, there wouldnt be enough of a difference to most people to justify the much higher cost of the Powerbook. Especially considering that to most people, the main selling point is the speed of the G4 processor.

There are so many different flags that I don't think there's a connection to iTMS. I found the following flags: Argentina, Chile, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, India, Hungary, Poland and Turkey. However, I couldn't find Brasil, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. So there's no logic pattern. I guess it's not hard to predict that some of the countries I listed abover are not a likely candidate for an iTMS in the short term.

Please up date the iBooks this week. And make it a good update. We've had the same white plastic for too long. Not that I didn't like the look, but its time for something new. Show us something cool. If you do, I promise to put my order in the moment they come out.

First of all, the iBooks have had a very strict product cycle in the past. They were updated every 6 months. (Last update occured in October). Between October and January, the 14" iBooks and the 12" PBs had similar specs, they even had the same clock speed (1.33 GHz). I don't have the slightest doubt about an iBook update in the coming weeks.

That would mean iTMS in Mexico! Yeah right... There isn't even an Apple Store in Mexico. Apparently they see no market here yet.

Apple's "strict" product cycles have been completely screwed up in the last half year or so. I think since the iMac's delay and until now. The no-G5 PowerBook is obviously making the iBook updates come to a halt for now. Unless there's a mere 0.17Ghz increase and maybe Bluetooth 2.0 included, the PowerBook's update has to come first. But considering what was done with the PowerMac... high end 1.5Ghz and low end 1.33GHz iBooks would seem likely so as to not interfere with the low end PowerBook. The lack of dual 3.0Ghz PowerMacs shows just how much trouble Apple is having updating their hardware.

As Nermal Pointed out I should also be keeping my fingers crossed for NZ and Denmark - Go you guys too.
I was looking at the QT 7 Pro page and one of the features struck me as a possible addition to iTunes 4.8
New AAC constant-quality mode. Create AAC audio files optimized for constant quality for a consistently high-quality listening experience.
Maybe VBR AAC encoding in iTunes 4.8? Here's a hopin'

CH stands for Confoederatio Helvetica. CH is not only Switzerland's TLD but also our international post and car codes. The Latin translation for "Swiss Confederation" was chosen in order to not favour one of the country's four official languages.

It doesn't look very bright for iBooks this batch, what I would do in your situation is wait till the end of the week (or when ever you need to order it by) and order it. You will enjoy it no matter what. It does however look pretty grim for ibook this week.

First post from a future partial switcher (I have a home built 3ghz pc...when you don't deal with the dell crap, they're not so bad). I am kind of stuck right now, I need to get a powerbook before september, so I can't wait till the Paris show (which I am planning on attending), but I want to pick up a 12" Powerbook. Through a good friend I have 25% off, so I am not worried about a price drop. I heard from another friend of the possibility of a better Powerbook update in June...is that gonna happen, or should I just order it now and enjoy? Any advice would be great.

Anyone think that perhaps Apple will use iTunes 4.8 as a platform to push out the new version of QT to Windows users? And of course, don't forget that 4.8 has to have a fix to the Harmony issue.

It seems there are no imminent upgrades for the PB line so it really depends on your needs. If you buy it now you get a great peace of hardware anyway, the aluminum series has been on the market for a while by now and you should be relatively sure you get a mature product whilst getting the very latest interface ports. If you don't really need it now you might wait but than somebody could suggest you to wait for the new product to be well tested.
The point is you'll know, it's an endless trade-off.
I got a 15" last week and am more than happy, if you want it go ahead and get one! :)

Unless your doing hard gamning or editing, which the PB isn't made for (is it?), then buying one now wouldn't be a problem. My dad bought a big 17 PB 2 monthes and loves it, I think it is way to big and I feel right at home on my year old 12er. I am totally content with my PB and it should last me a long time.
I am just waitng for the iMac update to have a desktop (or lack of one) computer. You could wait to the end of week to buy just to see if apple pulls any funny tricks out, but buy soon. You will be happy.

I say go for it now. There won't be any updates to the PB line in June. That's just too soon considering they were just updated at the end of Jan. Get it now and enjoy it. If something comes out (I'm guessing MW Paris?), you could alway eBay it and you'd probably break even since you're getting a 25 percent discount.

I wouldn't bet on that - I just got an Aluminum PB two weeks ago. Mine is doing relatively good (except for the dead pixel in the middle of the screen and the fan being constantly on, which seems to be one of the bugs re-introduced by Tiger - had been fixed in 10.3.9). A colleague of mine got his on the same day but his still has the bad trackpad. They still haven't fixed that.
Plus: if you're planning on using Tiger, make sure you get 1gb of RAM. Mine was running very fast using Panther and 512mb - but Tiger made me go to the store and buy another 512mb because the harddisk was constantly rattling, which in turn shortened battery time by about 30%. And no, this had nothing to do with Spotlight indexing.

Looks pretty much like thats what we are all hoping for... maybe the 128mb vr is supposed to differentiate from the mini? Anyways im seriously considering replacing my iMac, or getin another to sit along side it. One more thing... i hope that they get rid of the blank white space! i would be ok with an extra .3 inches thick, its not like im carrying it around.

(Keepin' those fingers crossed)
There is indeed VBR AAC in the audio options with QT7Pro.

I doubt iBooks will get updated in this coming batch. Most rumor sites agree and the iBook ships in 1-2 buisness days, whereas the iMac and the eMac are still 5-7.
But who knows.
Steve must know! Let's ask him! :D

Anyone think that perhaps Apple will use iTunes 4.8 as a platform to push out the new version of QT to Windows users? And of course, don't forget that 4.8 has to have a fix to the Harmony issue.
What I want is for them to fix the damn gaps between tracks. Ripping them as "joined tracks" just doesn't work, you lose the actual tracks in the process.
Exemple: if you rip tracks 1-3 as joined tracks and the other as single tracks, you can no longer skip to tracks 2 and 3 and it shows up as tracks 1,4,5,6,etc in iTunes. How dumb is that?!

Waiting for TS to say something more...Yeah, I'm waiting for TS to give an updated report on the iMac. Two weeks ago they said "within two weeks." updated hardware is nice and more possible music stores are cool but what is calling for an iTunes update to 4.8? There haven't been any problems to my knowledge, what new features will this bring?
As I said earlier: they still haven't fixed the damn gap when playing tracks. See my previous post for the specifics of the problem.

Maybe the 128MB VRAM is supposed to differentiate from the mini?
The Mac mini has a Radeon 9200/32MB. The eMac and iMac don't need 128MB VRAM if that's only to differenciate them from the mini.
I do wish the entry models (Mac mini, eMac, iBook) had 64MB, iMac had 128MB and PowerBook/PowerMac had 128MB/256MB.

I get on well with my local apple dealer and dropped in for a look at the tiger release on Friday night
Told him I was in the market for a new IMac
He said under the counter hang on, they are due in to stock in the next few days
asked him if we had the usual deal and he said yes
He'll buy me a bottle of wilfd turkey if they do not turn up
That's money in the bank for me
So I placed an order sight unseen
Went to Donmayne and they are giving all sorts of goodies away free of charge with the purchase of the last 6 IMacs they have in stock
That to me is a sure sign of a new model hitting Australian Apple stores this week

Hopefully I helped the iMac revision release a bit. I've been holding off on buying 10.4 because I've been waiting to get a new iMac. For whatever reason 10.3.9 has been poison on my Mac so I was looking at a weekend getting it back to 10.3.8 and I just couldn't see doing that with a new OS out so I gave in and bought it.
So I'm figuring now that I've spent $99 on Tiger (Fry's.... pretty decent price) new iMac should be released any time.

Yes and yes. The thing I don't understand is how Apple differentiates version upgrades from the little bits and pieces it pushes out when you load up iTunes. (I'm not a code jockey, but I'm pretty sure I've read that Apple sometimes pushes out small updates that load when you open iTMS. Call me crazy.) Seems like Apple could bust Harmony and update its DRM everytime you surf iTMS.
I suspect Apple is saving iTunes 5 for the next iPod revision -- probably June at WWDC or September in Paris. Give me:
* Heiarchical playlist folders similar to iPhoto's folders.
* A 99-cent credit toward an album for purchasing a single on that album. (I would buy more albums if this were the case.)
* Alias song info, I can have a song from the OC mix also show up on the album it came from.

It's getting harder and harder to defend Apple. My friends are VERY loyal to Microsoft and their excuse is always, "Macs are nothing but underclocked pieces of trash with no graphics power, no processing power, and users that can't handle more than a one button mouse." No joke, that was quoted word for word. What they don't understand is, Mac OS X Tiger isn't a resource hog like Windows XP. It doesn't need powerful hardware to run fast. Come on Apple... you gotta beef up the hardware. You will NEVER win die-hard Windows users over...

I went ahead and took the plunge on a new iMac on Friday night. I got a 10% discount via the Tiger promotion (my wife won a 1GB shuffle) so I figured it would be a good deal. I have absolutely no regrets...i got the bluetooth model with wireless kb&m - 20" w/ 1GB of RAM. Biggest regret is the size of the hard drive, which I would have bumped up to 250GB if I had BTO. If the new iMac has a faster drive, the apple sales guy told me that if the iMacs were reved within 2 weeks of my purchase I could either bring in my receipt and get the difference in price btw the new model and what the current model will be selling at then or I could swap mine out (but pay the open box fee) for a new one. Tough call really. Here's a pic of my setup:

I think your iMac predictions are pretty much inline with everything that has been discussed on this and other sites; however, although it would be a bit of a surprise, a G5 eMac isn't completely unthinkable. As has been previously discussed, the eMac form factor works great for education, so that doesn't have to be completely renovated. Also, if I recall correctly, the original eMac was released with very little fanfare. A 1.6 G5 makes sense to me, but I won't cry over a G4.

These specs are an improvement, but I sure hope they also come with price drops! They also need faster system busses and cheaper prices on RAM upgrades - I'm not getting less than 1MB this time! Surely there will still be two eMac models - Combo and Super drives...no?
I'm hoping for the following MSRP's:
$749 eMac 1.42mhz Combo
$899 eMac 1.42mhz Superdrive
$1199 iMac 17" 1.8mhz Combo
$1349 iMac 17" 2.0mhz Superdrive
$1699 iMac 20" 2.0mhz Superdrive
Edit: OMG! Finally - I'm no longer a newbie! :D

Fast dropping LCD prices are the best reason to see big iMac price drops now. And, with the aging G4 chip in the eMacs and rapidly dropping prices on DVD R/W drives, the eMac is definitely due for a price drop. Athough, if they'd bump the eMac to a G5, that would warrant the same prices.
I for one don't really care to have an LCD screen, but I do want the speed of an iMac. But, I know Apple wants to push the LCD's and will never make a high performance CRT machine. :(

I've been waiting for a couple of years for a significant performance upgrade to the eMac. The eMac is a great little machine. However the last upgrade was woefully anemic (from 1 ghz to 1.25 ghz  ).
Apple should recognize that the eMac isn't just for the education market anymore. There are many potential customers that would like a choice of a much more powerful version. Apple can easily install a G5 processor and that noisy eMac fan could finally earn it's keep!
The Macintosh started out as an all-in-one computer and the eMac continues that tradition very well. I just wish that Apple would stop crippling it and give us eMac users some real power. Since we can no longer install 3rd party processor upgrades, we have been held hostage to Apple's inexplicably conservative approach. I'd pay more for a fast G5 eMac.

Yeah, I don't really see major problems in iTunes...or even minor ones. Someone earlier said that they were really bothered by the gap between tracks, but that doesn't bother me so much. I'd rather see the search functionality of iTunes brought into next gen. iPods. Due to the small size, an on screen keyboard is not realistic, but the scroll wheel can only do so much with a huge library. It would be nice to search by letter, like if each was tabbed or something. It could be a menu option on music, like artist->by letter or something like that. Tabs would probably be better on the battery as well. Anyone out at Apple listen to that :) ?

I've been waiting for a couple of years for a significant performance upgrade to the eMac. The eMac is a great little machine. However the last upgrade was woefully anemic (from 1 ghz to 1.25 ghz  ).
There's a fairly long list of things you forgot to mention:
1. FSB up to 167 Mhz from 133 Mhz
2. Backside L2 cache to 512 MB from 256
3. Faster DDR 333 Mhz RAM up from the old PC 133
4. USB 2 up from USB 1.1
5. Radeon 9200 up from Radeon 7500 -- VRAM now DDR
6. Superdrive models burn DVD's 8X up from 4X
I'm not sure, but they might have bumped the HD speed to 7500 RPM from 5400.
In any event, one review I read said this eMac was quite a bit faster, which ain't bad...
My dual-boot 1 Ghz eMac is still chugging along happily.
Just waiting for the Applecare to expire, so I can have fun with some of these mods:

I completely agree. If the high price of LCDs was a reason for the iMacs price hike, then the lower prices for LCD panels today more than warrants a price drop. Then again, we are talking about Apple here.

I'm also watching the iBooks with interest. I wonder if lower LCD costs will reduce the price of this product line? I usually replace my computer every three years, which means that I'll be wanting to update my 800MHz G3 iBook in the next 3 - 6 months.
I'm a bit reluctant to buy a G4 machine in their current form because I have a horrible feeling that in the next 18 - 24 months, we will see a significant number of software products that will specify a G5 processor as a minimum and I need a machine that's going to last!
Having said that, the G3 iBook was pretty close to the end of its life when I bought this one, and I feel as if it's still serving me well even after 2.5 years of solid use. I'll be taking a wait and see approach, I think.

Please up date the iBooks this week. And make it a good update. We've had the same white plastic for too long. Not that I didn't like the look, but its time for something new. Show us something cool. If you do, I promise to put my order in the moment they come out.
We'll will probably not see a new design in the iBooks unless its a G5. There has been some redesigns whiles still on the same type of processor like from the Beige G3 PM to the B+W G3 PM and the G3 Clamshell iBook to the White and Silver iBook G3 but those are the only ones so far... Maybe if we get a dual core G4 we'll see a new design. But when they do... I bet you its going to be something totally cool! :)

Agreed, but the eMac is one of Apple's Cheapest computers (besides the Mac Mini) and they need to keep the price down as much as posible and that means if they need to put in a dual coore G4 instead of a G5 then I'm fine with that if it is going to save us money.
but I was thinking, Why not make a $200 ($199) Apple, Well Designed CRT, for the Mac Mini?
It could just slide into the back and the CRT would act as a hub for the Mac Mini (Add some additional USB ab=nd FireWire ports that it needs. But It would also have a VGA port so us iBook Users could hook it up to our laptops! (In my dreams! :) ) But it would have an All in one feel to it for the Mac mini but would work with ever Apple Computer on the market!

Ok, Ok. How long do I stay up tonight to watch and see if the apple store site does something funny? How long before I check the html to find something else hidden (remember the powerbook g5 'html switch' thread that enamored us for a week?)
Of course, I'll be taking time around 9am at work tomorrow to wait and watch for a flicker of change for that silly little imac update....that I've been waiting on since about March....
anybody with me feel the pain of 'maybe next tuesday?!'

I could honestly see the eMac get a G5. Then all their desktops would be running on the G5 chip, except for the Mini. I am just not too sure that a G5 could be cooled in the Mini without having plastic melting all over the desk. PowerMac, iMac and eMac should be G5's. That leaves the G4 for laptops and the Mini. Well we will have to see what Apple comes up with. I remember last winter there was a rumor that the G5 was coming to the eMac, but it never surfaced. Probably an upgraded G4 is what will happen, but Apple would be smart to make an economy computer with that kind of power to compete with lower priced PC's.

Apple doesn't want the eMac to compete with lower priced PCs. That's what the Mini is for. The eMac won't get a G5 because it would draw too many people away from buying a Mini, which is what Apple really wants.

That could be a semi-valid point, except for the fact that it needs a little tweaking. ;) hehe. Apple would LOVE to sell an eMac instead of a Mac mini. $300 more in Apple's pocket. I think what you want to say is that a G5 eMac would draw people away from buying a G5 iMac. That's Apple's REAL concern. A loss of an iMac sale to gain an eMac sale is the loss of a $1299 sale to gain a $799 sale.

I don't know if any amount of upgrades could make me want to buy an eMac over an iMac. eMacs are kind of ugly in comparison, and I'm pretty hooked on LCDs at this point. Anyway my point is that I agree with you to some extent, but I think there are more factors than just power that affect someone's decision to buy an eMac vs. an iMac. For example, right now I already have a nice 19" LCD and I could buy a dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac for the same price as a 20" iMac. But I'm going to buy an iMac, despite the fact that it will be a bunch slower than the PM, because I want something that creates less clutter.
To my original point of Apple preferring you to buy a Mini over an eMac, you are right that they probably profit more from selling an eMac. However they would also probably prefer to brag to the press and investors about how they sold X thousand cool new little Mini's to people rather than a computer with a design that's like 8 years old at this point, and is probably going to be phased out sooner rather than later.

Agreed,
as the G5's get faster and faster, the need for a low end Macintosh with a G5 Processor will go up. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 1.6 GHZ eMac G5 in the not too distant future.

I dont think the eMac will be Apple's solution for a low end Mac with a G5, unless they make some significant other changes too (replacing CRT with LCD for example). But I'm willing to bet that if they do come out with something that different from what the eMac is now, they will just call it something else anyway and basically replace the eMac with it.

Am I wrong or did the front page of Apple.com just change. It has a white background now and the new PM dissapeared. Now there are "top widget downloads" etc. And order status is down as well.
Really looks like there is an update coming. :)

i'm going on vacation at the end of this month so i need a new ibook (don't have one right now)
so i guess i have to order one soon, and hopefully they will put tiger on it
i thought i had to buy one this week so i would have it on time, but with the new updates i don't think i want to miss it, so i'll have to wait
why is apple doing this to me?
According to a the assistant manager of Apple Centre Newfarm (Brisbane), all new stock that comes in after May 2 will have Tiger pre-installed. In-store stock still has 10.3.

iM G5/1.8 FX5200 : 12.1 (16.9)
(1024x768 high)
That is quite a difference
Granted the Powermac is dual core (although it wouldn't matter much) and the pmac has a higher bus + dual channel memory (maybe imac can get dual channel as wel when adding ram in pairs. Also the PowerMac has a radeon XT, but apple underclocks the cards anyway so type extensions mean bogus.
