Apple has hung (http://images.macrumors.com/article-new/2011/10/letstalk.jpg) a "Let's Talk iPhone" sign on their Apple Town Hall Auditorium where Tuesday's media event will take place. Apple is expected to introduce their next generation iPhone at the event.

The signage mirrors the invitations (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/27/apple-issues-invitations-for-october-4th-iphone-media-event/) sent to media last week. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, October 4th.

There are numbers on each icon. Perhaps they have some meaning?

4, 10(o' clock), 280, 1

What could they mean??

4 + 10 + 280 + 1 = 295 --> i.e. N95, possible model number for iPhone 5?!

I know I shouldn't have expectations. But nothing about a 4S version of the iPhone says go out and buy to me. And since 2007 this was my annual ritual, standing in line to buy the next cool iPhone. I don't care about iPads or iMacs, though I have three Macs (two MacBook Pros and a Mac Pro Tower). All I care about is this wonderful little device that has become so integral to my day-to-day life. You'd think after 15 whole months, skipping the regular June/July launch date, they could come out with something slimmer, sleeker and more exciting than the same old phone with a faster chip. I couldn't care less if it recognizes speech. I don't want to share what I want the phone to do with everyone in the room. I just want a bigger screen and a sleeker body. Sorry. But I'm bracing for disappointment here. No, Virginia, there's no real new iPhone. :(

No, the calendar is the day it is happening, the clock is the time it is happening, the map shows where it is, and the number on the phone probably means one phone (world phone and only one new device.)

the map doesn't really mean anything since regular iOS has that number

The map most certainly does mean something. The stuff on the Maps icon is not just random roads and a number, it is the actual (simplified) layout of Apple's campus. 280 is Interstate 280, which runs through Cupertino right by Apple HQ. Hence the Maps icon on the invitation tells us where the event is.

4th of October at 10 on the clock, off I280 (which is where Apple is located). The 1 is a random number for a missed call/voice mail which if anything suggests the new notification system, which is lining up to be a killerish new feature that has finally arrived

That's quite smart actually! I just noticed that. But the iPhone map icon has always said 280, the event is on the 4th at 10:00, so unless Apple has been prepping this since the original iPhone, it's not the case. But if they have... (Which I unfortunately doubt) they will probably have something HUGE in mind

Good idea. Wish it was true, but I think Mr. Jobs just wants a nice, quiet retirement. Unfortunately, I think the iPad 2 announcement was his last. It would be nice if he did what you sid though.

I wish I'd feel more about the forthcoming hardware, but I feel more excited to finally get iOS 5 for my iPhone and iPad than seeeing the iPhone 4S unveiled. I don't really think there'll be more about iPhone 5 than at best a sneak peek for a release early next year. If it's coming tomorrow too, Apple has done a hell of a job of keeping it secret, and for some curious reason, a much better job than keeping the 4S hints secret. Rumors have basically all been about the 4S so far, except that early design thing.

I'm mid-cycle in my AT&T contract with my iPhone 4, so I'm on track for the 2012 iPhone. Still a little jealous of everyone who will be getting an iPhone 4S and/or iPhone 5 (and/or iPod touch 3G) this month.

But all-new hardware or not, I think there are only two or three things that we'll remember about Apple's announcement years from now. Not processor specs or enclosure design or notification improvements.

First: PC Free because it will finally allow iOS devices to enter be post-PC era. And iCloud because it paves the way for Apple's next decade of innovation, the way iTunes did way back in 2001. And maybe Assistant, if it's really that much better than Voice Control.

I think "Let's talk iPhone" means that Assistant will probably take up a lot of time on Tuesday's presentation. Looking forward to it. But the infrastructure announcements are probably going to be far more important in the long run.

Oct 3, 2011, 03:35 AM
Right. But it's important to note that that's the standard Maps icon and has been for a while. Check the iPhone.

Important to note what? It is just saying that it's at the apple campus rather than at another convention centre, and they thought that was clever to use the existing icon.

Why did the original icon have the pin on infinity loop? Because it just made sense, otherwise there would have been dozens of threads and theories if it was just chosen at random, by fools trying to attribute meaning where the is none.

----------

Missed call ;)

Yes, it is warning us that the new phone will have the same reception issues as the iPhone 4 and we will miss calls at random.

I think if it read "Let's Talk, iPhone", then Tuesday's events will only give us an iPhone 4 look-a-like with some neat voice enhancements, and they'll teach us how to talk to some new iPhone software.

I've said this before and I'll say it now,
The 1 missed call means one new iPhone. I think it's probably the iPhone 5. Firstly, no-one makes a case based on a rumour. And 16 months after means that there could be production delays and difficulties. If it used the iPhone 4 body, what production difficulties would occur? Just some internal improvements.

So I think it will be an iPhone 5 because it is the main phone and I think the 4S will just be the 4 but with a few changes. No need for a separate number or a new keynote for such. Whose with me?

Apple is going to really push the new voice Assist features of iOS 5. I love my iPhone 4 and have no desire to move away from Apple's phone offerings, however, I will be very upset if features available on android phones for over a year, require the 4S. Of course Apple is in the business of making money, and voice control is a big feature, but please make all iOS features work on iPhone 4.

Already discussed in another thread.

It'd be nice, but unlikely, considering iPhone history with other "needs a new model" features like video recording, voice control and MMS.

Almost certainly Apple will say that only the new iPhone has the CPU and memory to handle the voice assistant.

(They could be right this time, at least in the way that Apple implements it, which is likely to set aside resources for it.)

The iPhone 4 got notifications as a consolation, though.

I would like a tear drop phone, I do need to upgrade from my semi broken 3g.

Curiously I think that whatever phone they release at the event, it will be right to refer to it as a teardrop phone :D.
