View Full Version : New Server Planned
Hi all,
Apologies for the delays and errors on the forums over the past couple of weeks.
A new server is on order, which should split the forums over two servers.
This should improve server load and hopefully will mean good responsiveness even during high traffic times such as product releases.
I can't promise that it will sustain Expo Keynote traffic, but we'll see... :)

That is good to hear. I was lucky if I got on Macrumors on events like Tiger release and WWDC, MWSF. Which this new server should help a bit. Is it an Xserve?

This should mean less "Server Busy. Please try again later." and more Mac Rumors...:D

That's great... it has been times when it has been almost impossible to navigate and read the forums, not to mention troubles with posting (resulting in LOTS of double post...) :)

Great stuff! The 'server is busy' message has been a pretty regular occurrence for me over the past couple of weeks – very frustrating when you're trying to post.
Cheers arn and keep up the good work! :)

I would love to contribute, even if it's just a few duckets (who says duckets anymore? Me, I guess).
Anyway: I have no idea how MR is structured: the ads must cover it all, I assume. But, if it doesn't, regulars should contribute, I think.
Just my opinion. Great news on the new Server!

Was the recent server upgrade an interim measure and the upcoming one planned all along? Or is this now a change of plans due to unforeseen circumstances?
Whichever, it's all good news.

It was a "not good enough" server move. :) It will still serve as the php/apache server for the forums. Just that the database will be moved off to a second server (third in total, as it is)

Must have been a little frustrating to discover that. Thanks for the reply.

I haven't gotten any of those messages (knocks on PowerBook) but a new piece of technology is always welcome!

yeah, and what type of connection are they hooked up to? I know it blows the doors off when I had my Quadra 650 running on my Adelphia Cable connection for my ftp/webserver.

Well once you get that project done, get a PayPal link set up so us post whores can help pay for that junk. :D
old servers are nothing special.
the new one is simply a Dual 2.8GHz Xeon with 4GB RAM, and RAID 5 SCSI. Before anyone suggests it... my provider doesn't offer XServes... so wasn't an option. ;)

Not that I've got any right to object but I somehow feel violated knowing that we're served by the darkside!

I second the motion for a Paypal link. If everyone who frequents this forum kicked in just a little it would be a lot. Should be more than enough to solve the current issues (today is pretty bad). I also suggest looking into whatever servers and software are in use over at www.avsforum.com (http://www.avsforum.com). That board seems to be able to take the heat.

Regardless of its forums, one of the most seriously ugly sites I've ever had the misfortune to visit.

arn has the new server up and running. This should increase the thoughput capacity of the MacRumors forums and decrease those pesky "Server Too Busy" messages.
