View Full Version : The Levels of Macrumordom

Does anyone know the macrumor hierarchy? That is to say, I used to be a newbie. Now I'm a member. What's next? And what is the whole cursus honororum to the top (God)?

Although i have not made many posts, i visit the site and read the topics everyday - does that count for nothing? Have been doing that for a year. It does my head in when people post spam on the site or say rediculous things just to get a post up. The worst one is "Woo Hoo - i'm the 1st to post on this topic". Big deal, people, please don't post unless there is something significant that you have to say.

Also, can we get a spell checker on this site?

(sorry to rant)

Contributing to the community shows at least a little time and effort.
If you're happy doing what you're doing, then your 'rank' shoudn't concern you at all.

What can I say? Post more if you don't like it.

Member "rank" isn't always a good indicator of their contribution to the site (or lack thereof). There are many newbies that make great comments and add much to the site when they do post, and there are a few "higher" ranked individuals who don't.

I think this whole thing has been visited enough times, though. In the end, the only "concrete" way to base membership is on posts. Unfortunately, we can't base it on value of said posts, only quantity (excepting, of course, those that are Wastelanded or in the Political forum).

You could always contribute, when that comes back, then "rank" is immaterial.

I am not a very prolific member, but I do read the discussions a few times a week.
The forums are here for people to participate. I think the post count and status are like a small "reward" for those who contribute to the community, and those of us who just read the forums aren't really contributing to it.

One of the great things about this forum, is that even if you are a noob, and only have a couple of posts, even the most senior members still respect what you have to say.

I believe the powers that be are currently working on a new donation system -- there were problems with the old system. So unfortunately right now you can't donate.

I came here after lurking for a while with my iBook or iMac. when i went all out and got in to my mini and ditched the PC as well as i could i found that the people here are far more friendly than a lot of the people on the support.apple.com site. when i was at the "official" apple discussions board i felt like i needed a secret decoder ring or had to be part of a clique to get a message answered.

If anything thats the one thing i like about this site is that people are always willing to help no matter how small or meanial the issue may be. Just my 2 cents..

Thanks for the clear posting on the "numbers".

Let's hope that those of us that want to contribute cash to MR will be given the chance soon. For the record, I have not contributed to nay of the photography sites that I frequent. Many reason for this. Further more this is the only Mac site that I contribute to at all, in the way of posts. I do visit Appleinsider and Think Secret, but never signed up for their forums.

Take it for what it is worth, but that says a lot about the staff and quality of this site. Please let us help pay for the new servers! :)

Going a bit OT here. One of the photo sites that I go to, has a "hero" level. These are people that have contributed to the development of the site in some way. In your case you are a Demi-God already. But the kindness and effort that you gave to me in my personal time of need deserves your status to be elevated to Hero.

Pity we couldn't implement a whuffie system (see Cory Doctorow's "Down and out in the Magical Kingdom). Well written and informative posts (like mine) would gain more whuffie from those who read them than "whoo hoo, first post!" - not that I remember ever seeing that here.

Honestly, this thread should have died once the numbers were posted, but no, it had to degenerate into an off-topic mess... ;)

Anyway, some of the reasons I come here include helping others with their Mac problems and commenting on the various rumors and news articles that get posted. I'm not overly concerned about my post count, but I track it anyway because it's fun to do so. I also track my activity level (average posts per day - look at my profile) just because I enjoy doing it.

I think a good measure of Macrumordom isn't how high your post count is, but how much time you spend on this site. Your post count should be a secondary statistic, IMO.

Doctor Q

Research shows that MacRumors post count is directly proportional to your worth as a human being, and when humankind finally destroys the ecosystem the members with the highest post counts will be selected as the few to travel to Mars to start over again, with thousands of clones of each of them. I read all this in a reputable article that I bought at a supermarket checkout stand, by the way.

That's quite odd....not many people are that prolific. But its far from the most posts per day record.

And who would hold that record, Dukest - er, Mr. Anderson? ;)

I wonder how could someone throw 103 posts in a day? Is it possible?

I wonder how could someone throw 103 posts in a day? Is it possible?Quite possible. You just keep typing and clicking Submit. But still against the rules.

Yes, now that I look at his profile again, I see that it is indeed against the rules. No more 100+ post days for him I guess... :o

BTW I am new here (don't know whether been asked before) but just wonder why numbers (601, 6502...) are used on the title instead of words or something.

Each number represents a processor architecture that Apple once adopted. Starting off with the 6502, you go from there, eventually up through the 680x0 series and so forth. More information can be found in the FAQ I believe.

Eventually, people will hit the 74xx series and so on, but that's a ways away yet!

No problem - like I said, take a look through the site FAQ if you have any other questions. Either there, or some of the stickies in the different Forums should answer any questions you might have.

I've been trying to figure out what happened there. At least now I know. Shame - from his other posts he seemed like he had something to contribute.

Ammon was dealt with accordingly by the Mods, whose action was completely warranted due to the circumstances involved. Yes, he didn't post simple one word replies and such, but nonetheless, he ultimately was a serial poster due to his behavior.

Now let us never speak of him again and move onto other discussions. ;)

Cool! But it does have as much replies currently as MacRumor Pics! (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=38844) though it started way back in 2003. Thanks for pointing that :)

I think the longest thread had to be either the poop thread, or the drunk thread. Related to Apple Hardware I think either the Powerbooks generate the longest threads, or the Powermac G5 introduction had a huge thread.
