Is there any evidence so far that Siri will work with any accent other that a white person's standard American accent? What if you have a Chinese, Indian, Australian or Nigerian accent? I haven't seen a voice recogntion app that works consistently with foreign accents. A lot of iPhone users especially in the US are immigrants. Wonder if Apple took that into account while hyping up this personal assistant feature on the iP4S.

My mom has a heavy accent, and she is able to use the iPhone 4 Voice Control just fine. Sheesh, it is no big deal.

Is it racist for somebody to say "excuse me, I can't understand you" when you are talking to them face to face?

Only white people can speak with a normal American accent? Looks like there might be a racist here after all, and it's not the software.

No more racist than a person who can't understand a White southern drawl, a thick white Boston accent, or a white Australian accent.
Get this ridiculous thread out of here.

If its a legitimate question, why do you even imply that its "racist"? Why not just ask "Does Siri take into account accents? *SMH*

I don't know about accents but if Siri sees that you're black through the VGA cam, it simply will not work.

I'd like to see support for many accents, which I imagine will come over time. I'm particularly interested in the Australian accent, because I'm Australian. I was never able to get Voice Control on my 3GS to work accurately enough, despite speaking clearly. The same goes for Voice Control on Snow Leopard, and quite likely Lion also.
I'm hoping this will be very accurate, because if it is it'll be phenomenal imo.

Ahhh the ignorant race card... gotta love it :p
"WHAT... Siri doesn't work with Nilo-Saharan, Kanuri, Songhay, Ongota, Gomba, or Nubian?! Man Apple must be racist!"

How is a normal white American accent different from a normal black American accent? Or a normal Asian American accent?

There's a lot of ridiculous, irrational, foaming at the mouth liberals on this forum, but even they think you are being too ridiculous right now. This is a product made by an American company to primarily English speaking customers, so they will always come first, and then support is extended to where the technology can allow.
Get over yourself and listen to NPR or something.

That is not what I was saying. What if you are not a native speaker of English? I was just wondering if the Siri app work as well with the foreign accents?

Accent is derived from learned linguistic patterns and has nothing to do with race.
Unless of course the op is suggesting that an American of African decent, a Brit of African decent and a French person of African decent all sound exactly the same. Of course they don't. They all share the same racial heritage but would sound totally different.
Geeze.

No, you were suggesting that the Siri app was purposely ignoring non-white speech patterns.

And somehow that lead you to believe it was racist? I can't understand asian accents very well, and often have to ask them to repeat what they say. Is that racist? No.
To answer your question, I'm sure Siri will be fine with accents as long as it sounds like a language that is supported. Obviously if you spoke in a thick Irish accent for example, in which half the word is missing, it probably would have a hard time working out what you want to say.

My Siri app stopped working today, but in the past I've said to it things like:
- "play me some dam Tool before I pistol-whoop yo' as*s, foo" (with a blend of a Jackie Chan/Eddie Murphy accent)
- "sho me da bess spaghetti now" (in an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice)
- "bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia" (in a fast Deepak Chopra voice)
And it usually typed out almost everything I said. Some words are off, but it mostly got things right. My Google Search app does so as well.
So, I'd say Siri is not a voice-ist.

The statement in the keynote was that it would support English (UK, US, and Australian) on release. Don't you think that might be referring to handling of accents?

Here lies your problem:
"wondering if the Siri app work as well with the foreign accents?" does not equal "Is the new Siri personal assistant racist?"
And if you think they are anywhere near equivalent, you'll need more than Siri to help you find a clue. No matter your accent.

Lol go watch the keynote about siri. Apple did take other languages into account. They did say English (UK), french, German, and many other languages and services coming soon.
