I ordered a new 20" from the EDU store this morning. Status is still just "order received". Anybody's order being processed yet?

Well that is probably why they waited for Rev. 2 after all.

I'm going to try and pick mine up at the store tomorrow or as soon as they come in.

Mr. Anderson, Let us know if the fans are less noisy.

Not all of the Rev. A's had noisy fans. Some did right out of the box, some did after a while, and some never have. So it's going to take a lot of people buying and using the new ones for a while before we can tell if the noise has been 100% fixed.

Same thing with the other common issues, although we know that Rev. B does have a new power supply (it's a universal one now) and that the midplane and its bulging capacitors had to have been at least somewhat modified (since there is a new graphics card built into it). So I'm optimistic that these problems will be less common, if not gone.

i was dead set on a new powermac until i saw these new specs. i'm excited, but a little concerned. I use my g3 ibook for garageband and really want to be a power garageband user. will the new imac get the job done? will garageband even use the dual processors? please help! thank you.

Mr. Anderson, Let us know if the fans are less noisy.

I just hope I can get it tomorrow - it would be quite cool to surprise my wife....but there are no guarantees and it will most likely require a second trip to Chicago.

I ordered mine around 30 hours ago now - about 1 hour after they became available.

I went for the 20" 2 GHz with a 400GB drive - but only 512MB of memory. However, I ordered a further 1GB RAM from Crucial, and saved myself at least another £100!

My order is currently due to be delivered on or before the 9th...

Outstanding! X-Plane 8.11 will NEVER be the same again!

Mr. Anderson, Let us know if the fans are less noisy.

I keep reading about how noisy the iMac's fans are in these forums and I have to say that I have never heard a fan in the 4 months I've had mine. I must not compute as strenuously as some others do.

I'm feeling pretty confident that they will ship tomorrow or Friday, as I think most Apple stores are expecting to have them by the weekend, or Monday at the latest. So unless they way underestimated the demand and simply don't have enough for everyone who ordered, I bet they will be on their way to us by the weekend.

I was kind of hoping to have mine by Friday though (I paid for 2day shipping), as I have meetings all day Monday and Tuesday so I wouldnt even be able to hook it up until Tuesday night or Wednesday afternoon. Torture!

Mr. Anderson
May 4, 2005, 11:23 PM
So I never made it to the Apple Store today because they never got the machines, even though last night I talked to one person who said they were expecting them.

Even worse, they hadn't received any shipment confirmation from Apple that they were even on their way. So no one really knows when they will arrive.....

Is that the same thing as "processing order", or does "order dispatched" come after? They use different terms in the UK than the US, apparently. Also, is this a new model 20" iMac, or did you get the old one on sale?

In the post: one 17-inch iMac with a 1.8GHz G5, 250GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. I can't wait, it's actually gonna be my first ever iMac. I've always been a bit more of a PowerMac man to be honest, but the new iMacs are one sweet deal.

Apple Shadyside got a few 17'' superdrive models - and I'm an owner!!! New switcher too. :D  As soon as I saw the upgrade, I just knew it was time.

My only hesitation is whether I might not regret ordering online so I could upgrade from 160GB to 250GB...but surely that can be done easily enough when it's actually needed?

yes...the hard drive, optical drive, ram, BT, airport cards are all 'user serviceable'. just go into the support section on apple.com and then navigate your way to the iMac G5 page. all kinds of info on doing these conversions.

Well I ordered at around 6:30 am PDT on the day of announcement, and my order went:

1. Order Recived
2. Processing Order
3. Sent to Manufacturing
4. Back to Processing Order! Huh?

When I looked at the "View Order" page on the Apple Store it showed my original order as "Replaced with new product" even though I ordered the new iMac 20" (with 400 Gig drive).

Nothing has changed in the list between the first item and the second order except the title (slightly):

From IMAC 20/2.0/SD CTO to IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/SD CTO.

I phoned Apple and asked what is going on, and they said "nothing" and that the machine should still ship on or before the 10th (original estimation date).

UK order here for the 20" iMac, put after the announcement on Tuesday the 3rd evening.

The confirmation email had initial estimate for 5 days for build and 3-7 days for shipping. On Wednesday midnight I received the dispatched email with tracking number for TNT UK. Yesterday (Thur 5th) the item was shown on their tracking system as received on the central depot.

I'm not quite sure were it has been shipped from, but currently it's morning on Friday the 6th and I called them to find out if it's coming today and they said that it's going to be here tomorrow morning. That's quite fast, considering I've used the standard free shipping option. Maybe it is because I have ordered the standard spec model with no optional extras, thus avoiding the factory build stage.

Oh boy! can't wait for it to come! It would be a worthy update to my old trusty Pismo which definitely I'm going to keep around for its portability. I guess I'm gonna be blown away in terms of it's speed and extra features.

Let's see...

Despite all clear guided requirements that the iMac should be sent to me at work (as confirmed by the nice lady at their call centre), the imbeciles working at their delivery hub took it upon themselves to send it to my home address this morning ... which, during my work hours, remains relatively unoccupied. I hope the buffoon busts a hernia carrying it up and then back down the stairs from my flat.

I now have to pick it up from their hub after 7:30 tonight and bargain with photo ID, two rocks for them to bang together and a carcass of raw meat for them to feed off.

- On 5/3 was "Replaced with new product" (though exactly the same product with the same product numbers" and status reversed a step to "Processing"

- On 5/4 "Sent to Manufacturing" and now "Ships on or before 5/12"

As the non-BTOs stay on Same day shipping. :(

I placed my order for the low-end 17-inch iMac G5 Tuesday night. It will allegedly arrive Saturday. I'm too excited to sleep... I want it here now!

But, I guess I can wait...

In 1994, my father purchased me my first computer - the Macintosh Performa 550 - for an 8th grade graduation present. I loved that computer lots, but it only lasted me three years before it just stopped turning on. I never got it repaired.

When the time came to purchase a new computer, my father made sure I would not buy another computer from Apple as they were "a dying company." Thus, I purchased a very expensive Sony Vaio, which lasted me six or seven years.

That one died in early 2004, I believe, and while I had been wanting to switch back to Mac, I was unable to afford a new computer at all. Thus, my father lent me his newly purchased Dell, which gave me much trouble during my first few months of using it, and has provided possibly THE most boring computing experience of my life.

Having graduated from university in December, my father promised me X amount of money to put toward a new computer. While he initially wasn't too keen on the idea of me switching back to Apple, after showing him the new iMac G5 at the local electronics store, he seems to be rather accepting of this idea now.

I had been debating on whether or not to purchase a Powerbook once they receive a significant upgrade, or a new iMac. These new specs on the iMac G5 were enough to convince me that the time to switch back is now, and so, come Saturday, I'll be in the land of apples yet again, and I can already tell: it's gonna feel good to be back home.

Hello, neighbours! :)

May 6, 2005, 09:18 AM
Hey chaps. When you do receive your new iMac does anyone feel like installing Screen Spanning Doctor (http://macparts.de/ibook/) and seeing if it works? Screen Spanning Doctor allows you to use an external monitor in extended rather than mirror mode... the decision on whether or not I buy a new iMac hinges on this. If not, I'll be "forced" into buying a PowerMac ;)

Like yesterday. I am going to start calling stores around 1:00pm - 1:30pm.

maybe by some miracle they have received the 20s.

Based on my order and othes for the 20", I think next week is when they will ship to stores and online customers. Whether they will ship from China or US warehouses is anyones guess.

Let us know if you find one somewhere...

Well, it seems very quiet, probably quieter than my G3 iMac which is sat next it at the moment- THe old G3's hard drive can be heard above the sound of the fans in the G5 iMac.

And i've been using it for the last three hours non stop.

Unfortunately no as FedEx and UPS generally do not pickup on Saturdays. Heh I ordered my memory a month ago. I thought I was going to get a rev A imac with my tax refund until the delays prevented me from doing that (being european and living in the US... in europe we put our bday like this: DD-MM-YYYY, here it is MM-DD-YYYY... didn't pay attention) so as luck would have it now I am getting a rev B...

However I ordered one gig so I'll end up putting in the two crucial sticks (as they are the same brand, speed, etc.) and selling the stick that comes in the imac on ebay for a mere $30 - $40 or something like that.

I can see myself upgrade to 2gb in the next year though but so far a lot of people have said that 1gb is fine.

I am just waiting for the guy to come over and collect it and pay cash, well looking forward to it. Also just got a great deal on some Crucial ram, i think i got 2 1Gb's for just over £150 so my iMac will be fully maxed out.
I called up Regent street store and they have sold out and getting a shipment early next week, i hope i can pick one up. I am unsure whether or not i can carry the box through London and back to Weybridge or get it delivered. Hmmm.

There may not be many differences, but they could be significant. Perhaps some better fan control or something. Or it may have just needed to be updated to support the new graphics IC.

So why hasn't Apple posted a firmware update for the RevA iMacs?

While that does seem like a reasonable thing for them to do, the Rev B's might not automatically just work in the A, as the motherboard (aka midplane) has apparently been reworked quite a bit in Rev B to accomodate the 9600, so many of the changes in the new firmware could be related to that.

Apple has been good with shipping times in my experience...might come a day or two before. In general changing the RAM is the same as on a PC. The iMac's memory slots aren't blocked by wires or anything that you might find on a PC though.

Personally I think Apple is doing great on shipping times a few days after a new product release.

I ordered my 20" imac on friday afternoon (12:40pm PDT) and by 5pm PDT it was "Preparing shipment" the step before shipped.

Also on the ram thing, just make sure its mac compatible. Macs are much more pickier when it comes to memory but putting in the memory is much easier then on a PC as the previous reply mentioned, no wires in the way. When I put in memory for a customer who had an imac (2 months back) putting in memory was super easy. The lady was scared to even look at the guts of her computer.

what was the SATA issue? And could you show me a before and after example on the XBench?

D
I am not sure what the cause was, but the Rev A iMacs had suprisingly slow SATA performace. The highest disk score I saw for these iMacs on xbench was 105 with a 7200rpm drive and 110 with a raptor. Compare this to 130-140 on a Powermac or 130's on an eMac (IDE). This can be seen on any Rev A iMac in this (http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/comparesubindex.xhtml?machineTypeID=14&sort=processor#tableTop&minVersion=1.1.3) list.

Second to the graphics update, this is the biggest deal, IMHO.

Time when it leaves Apple. I purchased 15 minutes after the store opened on 5/3/05 and my "Est ship date" was 5/10/05 via Free Shipping. It went to Sent to Manufacturing on 5/4/05 and is still in that status as of this morning. I would expect it to go to Preparing for Shipment today and Shipped tomorrow. My PB 17" came directly from Fernley, Nevada warehouse in Nov '04. My Mini (which I returned) shipped from China. I would expect the iMac to ship from a California warehouse or the warehouse in Fernley, Nevada which usually takes only 2 days by ground. However, I really don't know which source will ship the new iMac. I hope there is not some confusion with my order and it goes to Preparing for Shipment today.

Note: I just remembered the PB was bought from Amazon and the warehouse in Nevada belongs to Amazon I think. So it should come from California unless they make a drop ship directly from China.

i say NO. I have the poor 1.6 version and I just compared it with the new 1.8 version. No difference in speed for what I do. My friend just got it this weekend. Used iMovie and iDVD and i honestly saw no difference in performance. I went to the store and tried out the 2.0 and again no difference but I would like to see if iMovie/iDVD run faster. Also i'm curious about the encoding time on the 2.0 version. I guess we shall find out soon enough when everyone else gets their 2.0's and start reviewing them...

I ordered my 17" 2GHz, 400GB HD, Bluetooth keyboard + mouse iMac on Thursday, and there's not much movement. Apple Store (UK) says there's a 5 day delay, although I didn't order from them as it takes absolutely forever to arrive.

To be honest, I'm just being greedy in ordering it, so I'm not too impatient. But I'd rather it was here than sitting there waiting to be dispatched.

I am in the exact same situation only with a 20" 2.0 model. Stock machine except for BT Mouse/Keyboard. It should go to Preparing for Shipping today and Shipped tomorrow with email notification. If not I will call the store and see what is going on. I selected Free Shipping and shipment on the site indicated in 3-5 business days which is Tuesday.

Personally I think the BT kb & mouse is that or free shipping.

It seems the way Apple's system works is that orders with overnight get priority and get bumped to the first of the line whereas those with free delivery are at the end of the line and are shipped in the order received. However any 2nd day delivery or overnight delivery get priority over these orders.

However... tracking just finally became available and it looks like my package is straight from China. No way it will be here tomorrow as it has to go through customs. Damn that really sucks!!

Geeze...they must have underestimated the demand or never had sufficient inventory to begin with. I called the local LV store and they do not have any 20" iMac's, not even one to display. He had no idea of when he would get his first shipment. If mine goes to ship tomorrow and it is coming from China I won't see it this week for sure. Yeah, you should definitely look into that if you don't get it via overnight. Keep in mind that "overnight" only applies to as of the time of shipping (that is, the departure scan from China, in this case) and not from the time of the order from Apple's site. UPS is pretty bad at having accurate and updated information for international shipments, so it might be difficult to verify. Apple might also adjust the charge for the order in light of its inability to meet the requested timetable.

Well that will only work in my favor as China is ahead in time and it was scanned out the system at 9:43am local time on May 9th in China. Plus apple emailed me information that it shipped at 4:43am my time so overnight would be tomorrow (the 10th). I know it will never arrive in time due to the fact that it will be held up in customs for at least one day.

I personally thought it would come out of an US warehouse / distribution center.

Keep us updated! I'm curious how this will turn out. If you got a notice on the morning of the 9th, then overnight would mean by the end of the day today (the 10th). That's at least ~40 hours and I know that they can move it that fast if they need to (but I've authorized $46+ to overnight documents at work, so I can only imagine how much a whole computer would cost).

I thought what the hell (again), an extra £80 and i could have a new iMac with a lot more features. SO i have sold my iMac for £999 to some guy and gonna be trapsing down to the Regent street store with my 10% off card :D to get a brand new 20".
Hmmm.

heh...i lugged mine (17) from Tekserve - 23rd between 6th-7th, to my office -19th between 5th-6th. other hand was occupied by the BT keyboard and 50 free CDRWs the store through in for me. don't think i could have lugged much farther...god forbid you drop a Mac, even one packed in its orginal box.

I just called Apple. My order (Sent to Manufacture status) is to ship from China later today sometime so I am told. I should receive it in approximately 4-5 days. She said once it reached Alaska I will have it in 2 days. I asked why the status had not changed since 5/4 and she said she could not answer that. Anyway, I have my doubts at this point but hope she knows what she is talking about.

They must have exhausted the initial stock and these things are being built to demand right now.

That's exactly the way it works. The planes leave at a fixed time and if the pallet does not make the departure cut off time, then it has to wait on the next day flight.

That's weird! They usually come via Alaska. Taking the Southern route I guess.

The Apple girl this morning was right...my status just went Preparing for Shipment so I guess the next I hear will be the shipment email and tracking data. Wonder if it will go to Alaska or Phillipines? Looks like a early next week delivery :D

I don't have my iMac yet but the "ripple effect" in dashboard works with Tiger installed on my 17" Powerbook.

Yes the ripple effect works on the iMacs. The 9600 is core image compatible as has been reported several times.

well i just spoke to someone at UPS International after my package came up with an exception code. Looks like it might miss a flight out of the phillippines. Right now it is scheduled for delivery on the 13th pending customs and if this delay might actually delay my delivery.

I'm hoping!!

You bet! The VESA mounting adapter arrived today so I'm ready to go...bit concerned about clearance for the cables at the rear with it being mounted on the wall though ... I'm sure I'll figure something out.

Adam

Once again, sorry for the messy desk - just need to hide the cables now. Apple VESA adapter is a work of art !

Cable space is tight, but just about ok.

Ah...Delivery Exceptions. I had one of those on a 50" Sony by FedEx freight. I was on the phone trying to get an explanation and eventually one of the trackers indicated to me..."quite frankly we lost the shipment!"

I'm sure that is not the case but s*** happens. Hope you get on the flight and get it on the 13th. I am anxious to get the shipping data so I can track this baby across the Pacific to Sin City.

I'm hoping this too. I can't wait for it to arrive. The nice thing is that **hopefully** it will arrive on friday, gives me the weekend to play with it.

I ordered my new G5 20" on Tuesday right after they were announced, just added a BT keyboard and mouse. I called today, and was told that it would be shipped today.

Then this afternoon my order went from manufacturing order to processing order, it appears they cancelled the original order and replaced it with an identical one, with the addition of the modem kit? not sure what this means, but it still says estimated ship of today. hope the thing gets on its way soon.

anybody else had a similar experience?

I have my 17" on order - hasnt moved from processing order since last Tuesday. :(

I'll be switching to Mac from Windows - dawn of a new age for me. What's the first thing everyone is doing with their new iMac? Video creation? Photo editing?

What additional apps should I purchase out of the gate? Games? Additional utilities?

Cant wait!

Exact thing happen to me!

They cancelled the original iMac and gave me a new one. Now its in processing order.Look what happend.

They replaced my iMac ( IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/SD CTO) today, I ordered 5/6. I check my update and it say's "Replaced with new product" which is IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/512/250/SD/BT/AP-USA. Why did they replace it? What is the difference between "SD CTO" and "AP-USA"?

IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/SD CTO

Vs.

IMACG5 20/2.0GHZ/512/250/SD/BT/AP-USA

It could mean faster delivery or longer wait.

Could have gotten stuck in the system. Best to delete and recreate. Happens all the time. However Apple is the first such system where the end user is notified of a new order.

Now here is another weird one for everyone.

Ordered my mac on Friday afternoon, when it went to preparing shipment they reserved the dollar amount on my debit card / checking account. However now the dollar amount is available again. I called my bank and they said that the hold of funds was let go by the merchant as it was invalid.

They will probably end up billing me again but thats the first time I have had that.

What I meant to say that Apple deleted your original order and recreated it.

Companies do this all the time however this is first time I have seen the user notified about a sku change etc etc etc.

Just got FedEx shipping information and my 20" iMac is scheduled for delivery on Friday the 13th (hope that is not an omen) by FedEx Ground. It does not appear the order was shipped from China based on the FedEx tracking data :D

Well, my iMac (20",400 GB/1 GB RAM) was put on shipped 9/5 but according to TNT it is still hobbling around in Shanghai, it even hasn't any expected delivery date or so....

It has to come to Holland, but I suppose it's gonna take a long long time

My stock 20" shipped out just before midnight... from New Jersey, on its way to Connecticut. Scheduled for a Thursday delivery, and that was with the cheap shipping!

Apple sent me a "shipped" notice on Saturday. And FedEx received the package data on Sunday night... but it didn't actually appear to be going anywhere. The expected arrival as of earlier today was still Friday, 5/13. I called Apple after I got home from work and had checked the status again. It was still "package data transmitted to FedEx." Sometime between when I checked the status at home and when I called (a space of 5 minutes), the tracking magically changed to "arrived at FedEx location." I guess it was just sitting @ Apple for 2 days? And the expected arrival changed from Friday to Saturday.

I'm a little miffed about that. I got the free shipping, but I didn't see the option for expedited shipping when I ordered (fast fingers, ordering too quickly).

Since the Rev. B's came out I never understood all the people that were worried that the 9600 would not work with Core Image. Apple's site makes no mention of the 9600 working with Core Image, but some common sense needs to be in place. If the FX5200 Ultra was supported I HIGHLY doubt Apple would replace that card with one that was not supported. I mean if they did, that would have been the single most asinine thing ever done in the world of every product and device ever made.

I suggest an ipod, a guitar, a midi keyboard, a blutooth phone, and if you can afford it a Digital video camera :-) Everything else is already on the mac!

If you are a student/pro, Keynote is good to show off with :-)
