Think about it, the iMac is a consumer entry level Computer for the average person. If apple made a 800Mhz G4 imac just think about what the future holds for the next powermac! im sure that the G5 will replace the G4 in Powermac towers. As iMacs are already at G4 and im sure the "pros" dont want to be on the same level as the average joe! 1Ghz macs are a sure thing, and yes inevitably the powerbooks CPU speed will fast surpass the iMacs (who knows maby "the 15 year old Band Nerd" was right? you know what im talking about!) apple still has to sell its old G4 line up to get ready for the next generation powermac, posably a G5, or just a G4 on SERIOUS steroids!
what ever the case, stop your crying the wait will be worth it, apple loves its "pro" comsumers and will not let you down. After all the "pro" users spend $4,000 plus on some systems!

but getting back to the imac... GIVE IT A WARM HOME! this new "baby" from apple will be so unexspected by the public that it WILL catch there attention and will become a great mac for all ages. the very simple fact that it looks cool, is small and says iMac on it is enough for it to sell millions! Now i know some of you still like the CRT modle better, but just last week Apple gave it some special pills (dont ask me for the brand im still trying to find out) and over night the once timmid cute CRT imac sprouted some real chest hairs and became the iMac we all know today, an iMac on staroids! Dont belittle its design, this is truly one lean mean PC rapeing machine! it has a 32Mb graphics card, and some people say that is sad??? excuse me? i have a iMac DV SE 500Mhz G3! it only has 8Mb graphics card, its nice and does what i want it to do and plays Quake 3! now if i where to compair my old iMac to the new one, there is nooooooooo comparason, the new imac is a G4, and has a Graphics card 4 times more powerfull! and i forgot who said it but i noticed to, the new imac looks like it could easily hold a bigger monitor. who knows give it some time, maby a 17" imac is around the corner!?!

personaly if you ask me the new iMac is nothing more than a cube in sheeps cloathing, its a G4 and is very compact, and better than a cube, it comes with a free monitor! God bless Apple, what will they think of next? a computer that comes with a iSub? (i wish, infact that is my only complaint, and is in my opinion the only ingredient missing from apples iMac recipy)

Many of us old, bitter farts (not technically old, Im 22!) sometimes get wrapped up in the rumors so much, that we dont stop to take a look at what Apple has made for us to play with. Then, we get all cranky and pick on 15 year old band nerds. (yes, I started that fight--check back to the post, I have issued a formal apology)

Well, the G5 is not far. The imac has taken the ex-g4s place. The towers are not being upgraded, nor developed from this point on. The G5 should make its release MacWorld Tokyo, or maybe sooner. Although, the new iMac is by FAR the COOLEST thing I have EVER seen...

For the record: the previous iMac weighed 50 US pounds with it's package. getting it down to 35 or so in the package will be a lot nicer on those that have to unload the little buggers every day.

Okay, I'm going to write this just on the topic "Think about it". Think about it. This is what I'm truly trying to do after all of these years following Apple computer. I remember back in early 1990 walking in CompUSA for the first time browsing computers. There were all sorts of brands back in that time stretched all along the walls and up and down the isles. PC's after Pc's after PC's.

As I continue to walk, I ended up at the far back corner of the store and there it was Apple computer. Folks I know you have seen this setup and went thru the same thing. I picked up the mouse and started mucking around the operating system. At that time, I was amaze with the effect of windows opening and closing from angles. I really liked the system at the time however I couldn't afford it.

Every since then, I would always make a special trip everytime I visit CompUsa to go to the far back corner of the store and see what's new on Apple.

Till this day, the store layout are still the same. (apple systems are located at the far back corner). Going back to earlier times, (1980's) I can recall looking at computer magazines at Apple's products. They were expensive, I'm talking about Video Graphics cards that were $3000 dollars or more. Hard drives and other expensive products. Remember folks. Of course they were very high end computer products. These products didn't exist for the PC's at this time.

Sometime during the early 1990 something happen to Apple. They stopped dominating. Now they are on a catch up phase with this new imac. The new imac isn't the power system design to beat the PC. But rather give consumers what they want in today's computer environment.

I wish someday apple come back to dominating the PC market. Computers are much more competitive than it was back then. I think if Apple come out with something really powerful and show consumers its real power other than introductions at Conventions and say so. I believe comsumers will flock to them without any limiting factors such as cost issues which has always been a determining factor on purchasing an Apple system.

Actually at the CompUSA here the Apple section was just moved from the back-corner to the front of the store by the entrance. I'm guessing that Steve had something to do with this since their service department was replaced by the Apple section.

Apple has just move the G4 to the normal consumer market instead of using an old G3... I think, that is a good decision. Even for us, those who are waiting for G5, well it looks very near. They couldn'T stay with a "pro" model at a higher price for nearly the same power than the imAc ... they have to change it soon, and to change it radically, by the way, it mean that i'm expecting the G5 for the next Macworld, and it's pretty soon.

The shift was Sculley / Emilio applying "market wisdom" to a company and industry neither of them understood. They nearly killed Apple trying to "lean it down" and "follow the market trends". When you take a leader in innovation and make it follow, you castrate it. The upside of course is that it humbled Steve Jobs and allowed him to grow up a bit before taking Apple back. Apple is still recovering momentum from that trainwreck, but will be back on track in about two years. We'll only see innovations happen more rapidly now that Apple is one of the few stable companies in a wounded industry. You'll note that Apple was putting on the financial brakes two quarters AHEAD of the recession when NOBODY else even saw it coming, let alone admit that it couldn't last.

I think that in general, from all the posts that I've read on this site, people aren't really giving Jobs and Apple the credit that they deserve. Take a break for a minute and think about what it is that Apple is doing as a company...what no other company is doing or can do... They make everything...the os, some of the best software for that os, the hardware that it all runs on AND it's own retail chain to sell it. Just think about that for a minute... it is truly amazing - even more so because they do it all so well.

Now think about Monday's announcements...most notably, the iMac. And think about where you can see this new iMac right now...Where? In every grocery store checkout lane and corner news stand in this country on the cover of one of the most prominent & respected news mags in the civilized world. No one, in any of these posts, as far as I know, has mentioned even a passing whisper of this incredible fact. I have a feeling that we are going to see a very different awareness of Apple in the months to come. And I believe that Monday was only a wind-up pitch for Jobs relative to the products that he has in store for us over the next 12 months.

So, forget about your temporary letdown from a marketing blitz (that may yet prove to be more valid than your initial thoughts) and instead, focus on all the reasons why we are so vehemently dedicated to this unique company.

The original iMac got just as much hype and publicity as this little booger is getting. Its now up to software support, performance, upgradability (uh oh), and open-ness of the consumer to switch OS's in order for the iMac to take a large percent of the Market Share....


I do hope it happens. At first, I was extremely dissapointed in the iMac because there was SOOOOOOO much hype. I think half of us were expecting a super G6 with 4 processors. As soon as that hype dies down, people will take another look at the iMac for what it is, at face value.

Its actually not too bad. I just wish the keyboard and mouse were wireless.

as far as the CompUSA remarks go, i have my own input, being that I am an employee.

we are one of the stores with the muchballyhooed full time apple solutions expert on the floor. he has done absolute wonders with our store. i have converted along with a solid 5 employees from diehard PC (windows hater always tho) to Mac-loving. Now I own this iBook and am interviewing for an Apple Retail position. he has created such a buzz that the president of CompUSA himself visited us one day and made a special request to speak to the apple rep, telling him that what he was doing there is "phenomenal" and he has instructed the GM to give him "whatever you want". Those of you out there that might have familiarity with the company should realize that it is not one that gives out praise se on a whim.

Anyways, Jobs' move in getting the reps in the stores was ingenius and I see it pay off everyday. Since he started in Sept. Apple has outsold any single PC manufacturer there (sony, hp, compaq)

No need to worry. Apple won't keep the pro line so close to the iMac for long. They know sales will sink, but you gotta understand that MWSF got to have been dedicated to the iMac since it is such a BIG thing for the ACTUAL CASH of the company.

As for the iMac I think it will be a success. At first when I saw that awful thumbnail of the TIME magazine, I thought SJ was CRAZY! But... after looking at that video, and at the Apple store, I changed my mind. THE THING IS COOL!! Compare it with the DEll boxes!! Consumers don't look at PCI cards, or at nitty gritty stuff like the 100 MHz system bus. THE LOOKS COUNT A LOT! AND THE PRICE!
There aren't many computers (IF ANY!) that look this good, can burn DVD's, CD-R/RWs (I noticed that the lower end has 24X burning!), connect with the masterpiece iPod, and probably more digital devices, has iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, Appleworks (MS Office v.X as an alternative), Flat panel display with a "arm" (noone predicted an arm, so I suppose it sort of did go beyond the rumor sites" and Mac OSX (compare Aqua to the Luna of XP, sorry PC guys, but this time I can say there is no comparison in elegance between XP and X's interface!) for $1200!

I'm waiting for a G4 processor iBook, about 700-800 MHz, a little thinner, 14.1 inch across the line, gigabit ethernet, BETTER graphics card, (16MB at least) under $1800 for the top model... Do ya think it will come?

yup. That one deals solely with macs. The guys in there also know a bit about what they're selling, so i always tend to go there rather than someplace like pcworld where the salespeople haven't got a clue about either wintel or apple.

We all talk about computers needing more power, well what do you mean by that? What Apple has done with the iMac is give the user more power in the form of servcies. What I mean is that with an iMac I can do MP3, make videos, burn DVD, and organize my photos, out of the box. That is a form of power. No I can not render my movie in 2secs I have to let if run all night but so what. If my computer was twice as fast it would only take 4 hours instead of 8. Is that a big deal to the average go, not really. Even a top of the line Athlon or PIV rendering would still take hours. Personally I think the iMac is the frist step towrard a new age of computing. The iMac might be one of the only computers sold today that once you get it up and running, and get the iSoftware on it a user my not need to install any other programs and be happy with thier purchase. The iMac might actaully give the user enough power out of the box alone to justify its purchase. What makes the iMac so cool is that you can just do things with it with little or no computer experience.

That gives the user power.

But apple does need to beef up their high end stuff or they will loose their power users where CPU power is a big deal.

like hp and ibm before them not believing in the pc in the 70s, apple fired this person mainly because they thought there was nothing that big to the internet (but, in hindsight after the dot.com bust, maybe they were right...ha ha ha)

that's exactly what kind of company i want to work for; a company that expects goal-oriented people who are motivated and always driving to succeed.

it sickens me as a 20yrs young person to see that people expect special consideration or rewards for doing what they are SUPPOSED to do. i want to work for a company that expects at LEAST as much as i expect from myself. if i was on the elevator and my boss came to me and asked what my job was etc, and i didn't have an answer, then i truly question whether or not that job is correct for me.

anyways i am again sick and tired of the lazy masses whining and complaining that their job is so unique in its pressure, expectation, boredom, pick one. do your job and expect the same from others and you will go far, not because you deserve special recognition, but because others don't.

my point in my last post is that jobs fired a person who could have helped apple cash in on the dot.com thing, but it would have been hard to time it correctly

but ebay and some others played the rise and fall of the internet revolution very well and came out very strong in the end like i believe apple would have done if they had given the internet a chance

jobs is good and he is bad for apple and history shows his mecurial business nature (ie - apple recovering from the mid-90s, apple falling in the stock market to an all time low, the success of the imac, the failure of the cube)

i may be young and inexperienced, but i am anything but idealistic. unlike so many people i did not grow up with a silver spoon in my butt and i try in earnest to realize and appreciate what i am given in life.

when it comes to my beliefs, i know what i know and believe what i do because everyday i can look at my father and see them validated. the only things my father does in his business is do what he says hes going to do when he says hes going to do it, and continually strive to make his company's workmanship, reputation, and consumer relations better. my father expects the same from his employees...EVERY day. if they fail at this, they lose their jobs. guess what?? his customers are always happy, unless they are used to taking advantage of people. why do people stay with my father's company??? he pays better than most anyone else and he takes care of his employees. maybe he has fired some people that have gone on to be successful, but that is "the real world".

real life experience is something i trust way more than the textual jaded view of someone i do not know. sorry hatman, but if i am "idealistic" then you are "cynical"

i am not saying that idealism is bad, just unrealistic

but i do know that the idealism of the young generation of the 60s produced some of the greatest political, cultural, and musical steps forward in society

i am cynical but i have still hung on to my core beliefs except for thinking that mankind is generally good

mankind is not generally bad either but somewhere in between and a bit of the cynical keeps one in touch with what is going on from day to day and it is a way to survive in the real world

i used to hate what i viewed as hardline cynics who were older and more experienced than me and seemed a little bit too conservative and unfeeling but i was warned i would become more moderate and not be a liberal (or conservative) idealist my whole life

as far as your dad's company, ask him again what is the number one reason people get fired...it will more likely be due to financial or personal reasons more than being that someone is not doing their 100 percent best

i actually never heard of anyone getting fired for that or anything related to that...people get fired mostly because of lack of funds in one time or another in a company's history...just look at corporate layoffs in america (and here is a cynical statement...it's not because business cares about people, business cares about money and that is the bottom line which is the only truth when you are dealing with dollars and cents)

as much as i wanted to say they 9oloder cynics) were wrong, i was wrong and there is nothing like having life kick you in the teeth a few times to give you a more realistic perspective

and no matter how sheltered or rich you become, you will go through a few set of teeth that will need replacing from time to time when they get kicked out...that is normal and that is life
