I see my old text message app, how do I interface with iMessage? Is it through that? Couldn't figure out from looking at Apples feature page how I use it? Looks like I'd be on text messages still?

You text people. If they have iOS 5 it will send an iMessage instead. If they don't it will send a text message.

correct. it's all integrated into messages.app.

it/apple knows if the number you're sending a message to is on iOS5 or not. if yes, then it turns the sender entry blue and sends as an iMessage. If not it stays green and goes as an SMS

There's not supposed to be one. Just text as if you normally would and if the recipient has an ios5 device, it will send as an iMessage.

What about my iPad? How do I find contacts?

So, if my spouse has a cell phone I normally text, but also an iPad and an iTouch with iOS5, how do I distinguish them? When I select the address to send the message to, safe to say I'll 'text' it to whatever her AppleID is, instead of her phone number?

It looks like it only allows you to click "send" if their email address is registered with IOS5. I tried to send a txt to a friend who doesn't have IOS5 and and exclamation mark shows up. if you click on it , it says person isn't registered.

Exactly. If they aren't using iOS 5 then standard SMS data applies.

This is what the recipient needs to do, in order to be able to receive iMessage messages on their iPhone, iPad, iPodTouch

Upgrade to iOS5
Goto Settings > Messages
turn on iMessage and add email addresses to the list in the "Receive at" option.

The email addresses they enter in there are the ones you can iMessage them at (once they have been confirmed)
