are photo stream pictures stored on the phone?

I thought the pictures went to the cloud but they seem to be stored on the phone for example i have taken 6 pictures, so 6 in the camera roll and now theres 6 in the photo stream, so 6 pictures are now 12 , if this was a few hundred thats alot of space, am I understanding this correctly??
 
Yes, that's how it works.

The point isn't to save space on your phone, it's for automatic syncing to other devices.

ok thanks, not sure i like that, works well with iphoto though and i suppose you could delete the ones off the camera roll
