ATV2 suggested an update, for iOS 5 of course.

Update downloaded, installed, but upon reboot, there's a display that indicates the ATV2 must be connected to iTunes.

That would be wonderful except the USB cable required to do so was not provided.

The ATV2 also won't accept a factory reset command from the remote.

Any ideas?

Don't you love apple! Yes you will have to buy a micro USB.

Not sure what iOS5 offers ATV 2 apart from photo stream, and as I have'nt updated to Lion yet, I don't think I'll update the ATV quite yet.

The micro USB cable is not something most people have around the house yet. I have about 500 mini USB cables, however.

If you have an Apple store nearby, take it there and have them fix it.

If not, a micro USB cable isn't too expensive. You could ask around at work to borrow one as well if you don't want to buy one.

Most people with newer Android phones will have one.
