The speakers lack bass and it is a hollow sound. They are not very loud.

Confirmed, any speaker set with a mini plug will work with the imac, and I highly suggest a pair if you listen to music at all.

That's the one area in which the iMac G5 seriously lacks...

So whats a clean form factor and highly portable solution for speakers with good sound and base for the new iMac G5s? (That doesn't cost the earth)

Check the link, the Klipsch pro media 2.1 speakers are awesome. I have had these for 6 months now and they sound great. 200 watts of power, thundering bass, good highs and lows. I listen to Rock, rap, and everything in between. They run $150.

For $350 you can get the klipsch 5.1 system with 6 speakers, but I recommend the $150 set.
