Ok, Mariah Carey's song "Dreamlover" is one of my newly discovered favorite songs of all time. There's a problem with the song though. I just got her CD, "Music Box," and the song has these random pops in it.

At first I thought it was my speakers, then I thought it was iTunes, but it shows up everywhere. It's like that on the iTunes Music Store song sample, the CD playing on a PC and the sample song from her site.

Does anyone know what the problem is with the song?

I guess. It's just kind of weird. And how can you say Mariah Carey's songs are bad quality?!? :p

By sound quality do you mean her singing voice? :p

Come on, everyone knows she has a lot of singing talent. Her range is amazing.

She's a performer at best, not a singer and definitely not a songwriter. Apparently she has some rare nasal condition that makes her voice appear to have the range it does, when in fact it's just a high whiney thing.

It definitely gives the term "pop music" a new twist...

Leave the poor guy/gal alone. So their music taste differs big deal. Way to be a good sport about it though dferigmu. ;)

If you hear it everywhere with samples and even on her site then it must be the song. Is it the whole CD or just one track?

It sounds like the clicks and pops you might hear on an old vinyl record. It's either because there's a sample from an old record that's looped in the song, or (more likely) they added the clicks and pops to make the song itself sound like a vinyl record. Kinda gimmicky, but you hear it on hip-hop songs all the time...

Thank you. :)

Only that one song on the CD has the problem and it's a fast-paced song so I don't think it was done on purpose.

Whatever. Not everyone likes the same kind of music.

I think that helps support the idea that it WAS done on purpose.

Mariah is a performer, but also a world class vocalist. Her voice is very well trained - her mother was an opera singer and she was coached from age 4. So, she has an extensive amount of training and skill with her voice, much like an opera singer does.

Her range has nothing to do with a nasal condition (she has no nasal conditions). She sings high notes the same way opera singers do, by tightening her vocal chords. Some may say it's whiny, I think it is beautiful. And if you don't like it, then there are Mariah songs where she does not use her whistle registers. Just a note about her high notes: she is generally acknowledged as hitting the highest recorded note in her 1991 performance of 'emotions' during the MTV music awards, her high notes are not digitally created, and she does sing the live.

Sorry, I know that I'm going off topic, but I can't stand people saying Mariah can't sing. She is a great vocalist in every vocal category - her voice is powerful, her voice is consistent, her vibratto is controlled, her tone is good, her range is phenominal, her enunciation is good, etc. I won't comment on her personal life, the way she dresses, or her behavior in general, because it doesn't matter to me. I listen to her music because she is talented and she has many well written songs, mostly from her older CDs.

This does happen, but I just wanted to chime in that I've had a couple of weird experiences. When I first got my iBook and ripped all my CDs into it, there were one or two that had popping that definitely wasn't part of the original recording (one was an Andrew Lloyd Webber, and only the second disc did it!). At that time, at least, I couldn't find any solution except to rip the same CD in another program on a PC, and then import it to iTunes. I think out of 200+ CDs, it happened twice.

FWIW, I don't think Dreamlover from her greatest hits has static for me. But it's a bit late at night here for me to really turn it up on my floor-standing speakers and test it. :p  :D

Thanks for that great defense! I have recently discovered Mariah and am turning into a big fan. I just don’t know that much about her yet so thanks for saying all that! :)

The popping happens during the whole song from her "Music Box" CD. I tried playing the song from the CD on a PC and the same thing happens, so I don't think it's my PB, iTunes, or Klipsch speakers.

I noticed the clicking and popping on this song years ago and find it very annoying. I hope it wasn't done intentionally because if it's a gimmick they ruined a very pretty song.

I looked around for a track without this noise but couldn't find one.

Another song that was ruined IMO by this simulated "vinyl LP noise" was Chicane's Autumn Tactics a few years back. I've also heard it in some hip hop tracks from time to time.

Frankly I don't understand why there's such a fascination with so-called retro vinyl LP noise. Most of us buy digital music to escape the artifacts of the past technologies (vinyl record ticks, pops and scratches and tape hiss, wow and flutter).
