iOS 5: A visual guide

I've read in numerous threads that people with the iPhone 3GS are concerned about the "hit" that iOS 5 might take on their devices so I thought I'd create a thread to say what several have already said: that iOS 5 runs GREAT on the 3GS...but also to show visually what some (I'm surely missing a few) of the new features look like. So here goes...

LOCK SCREEN

Lock Screen Camera (double tap the Home button)



Lock Screen Notifications (tap the notification icon to reveal action)



MESSAGES

iMessage is integrated into the Messages app and is automatically enabled for recipients with an iOS 5 device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch)



The keyboard can now be hidden by sliding it down while within a message (instead of going out of the message and back in)



From the Settings>Messages menu, you can toggle whether or not to use iMessage, along with enabling Read Receipts and sending messages as SMS when iMessage is not available



CALENDAR

Calendar changes to detailed multi-day view when in portrait mode





PHOTOS

Ability to create new albums



Add photos to existing album or create new album



CAMERA

Grid option



Focus lock (tap screen and hold to lock)



Zoom (pinch screen to zoom and to reveal zoom slider)



Slide from left to right to reveal recent photos




CONTACTS

Contact-specific ringtones, vibrations, and text tones



MAPS

Multiple routes

SETTINGS

Notifications

Ability to sort manually or by time and to re-arrange as desired



Toggle multiple options from within a specific app



General>Software Update

Over-the-air (OTA) Software Updates



General>iTunes Wi-Fi Sync

Ability to sync device wirelessly to iTunes

Open new windows in Safari (via links) in the background instead of automatically switching to the new window

Settings>Safari>Open Links



Emoji keyboards now integrated in iOS 5

Settings>General>Keyboard>International Keyboards>Add New Keyboard... then scroll down and select "Emoji"



MAIL

Ability to format text (bold, italic, underline) by highlighting desired text



WEATHER

See weather forcast by day or by hour (tap "Hourly" or slide forcast down)



CAMERA, cont.

Edit individual photos directly on your device

Edit button in upper right corner (options shown on bottom after tapping "Edit")



Rotate photos



Auto-Enhance



Red-eye removal



Crop photos

@lilnyc - to get to Custom Vibrations, go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn on Custom Vibrations under the Hearing heading. Then, under Settings>Sounds scroll to the bottom where you'll see the Vibration Patterns heading. Tap on Vibration and then at the bottom you should see the Custom heading where you can tap on Create New Vibration.

Have fun with it, it's pretty neat!

Thanks. I didn't think there was a way to change the title of an established thread but I figured it out and changed it to simply "iOS 5: A visual guide".
