iMessage on an iPhone gets registered with your Apple ID and your cell number. I suppose there is a chance that you number wasn't registered with apple when you activated the phone, so it may not work.

Does your FaceTime work with Tmobile? Usually it takes awhile for your phone to activate facetime, if you haven't done that yet. imessage works the same way
