What is the best application to do this? I downloaded a program called AudioX, but even short voice recordings tend to create huge files. I'm looking for something with decent compression. Basically I just want to use my Mac as a basic digital voice recorder.

Audio Hijack Pro will do this. .. mp3, aac, apple lossless.. $32
you could always import your wav file into iTunes and compress it... if you want on the fly mp3/aac encoding i'd go with Audio Hijack Pro.. www.rogueamoeba.com
note that the regular Audio HiJack does not do on the fly mp3, aac, or apple lossless, only AIFF. which is a bummer. it does a lot more than just capturing from your mic though.. i'd look into it, you might find a lot more uses for it than you think.

I use Amadeus II for recording voiceovers and such. I haven't compressed any audio with it but it says it can make MP3 and AAC files. It also has several background noise removing tools. It's $30 and you can download a fully-working demo.

Audio Recorder 2.1 is free, and it records directly to an AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, MP4, or WAV file.
