I was seeing 2 notifications for every email. Sometimes they would resolve down to one, but not always. Saw many postings about double notifications and the main recommendation was a hard reset, but this did nothing.
I believe I've resolved my issue and I'm posting in case someone else makes my same mistake.
I had setup my Gmail as Exchange and selected all the folders to sync. The default is just "Inbox", but I checked them all...including "All Mail" indented under "[Gmail]". After I went back and unchecked "All Mail", the double mail notifications stopped.
