Hi, i just got my first ever powermac dual 2.3ghz and was wondering, is it okay if i remove the side panel? because in the book that came with it said you should have the side panel on to run properly? so i have no idea if apple just says that as a precautionary tip or there is nothing wrong with the side panel off. People who have side panel off please let me know if there is any negatives for doing so cause i want to show this badboy off.

Also if i remove the side panel should i power down the Powermac?

One last question, i got the Radeon 9650 cause it had 256VRAM but when i check the About This Mac,

THe video card says 9600 but has 256Vram. THats the 9650 right? i know there is no real difference between the two cards.

Thanks

The G5 is designed to have that their, or at least, something there to allow airflow to go to the correct areas. The G5 needs air in a bad way, and was designed to allow for that. You can't just take it off and leave it off. You need something there to keep air going where it needs to go.

But nice intentions. :D

There may be a product that does what you want-- I don't know. I seem to remember something like that thought... can't remember... :o

Why do you want to open the side panel of the G5 while it's open. If you just want to see the innards all the time you can get a clear panel through Macskinz. http://www.macskinz.com/cgi-bin/product.cgi?page=g5 You should be fine opening the side panel for a short time but it may cause problems if open all the time. As for how the 9600 shows up I have no clue.

The PM G5 at my work has the side panel off for display purpose and that thing runs 11 hour days and not a single problem.

The manual that comes with the Powermacs say don't run it with the Metal side door off.

It shouldn't cause too much of a problem, with most of the cooling still going on behind the plastic panel. Some of the zones aren't within this area though, and these will be effected if you run with the metal door off.

Does the card show up in system profiler as ATY,RV351?
