You can set up Emoji a an international keyboard then just hit the globe on the screen and that will give you access to emoticons.
Go to Settings-->General-->Keyboard-->International Keyboards-->Add New Keyboard...-->scroll down and select Emoji.

Go to Settings>General>Keyboard>International Keyboards>Add New Keyboard> and select emoji. Once you do this you should be able to access it by clicking the globe icon on the keyboard.
