Open-Source Divorce for Apple's Safari

"As long as they (Apple) needed us, they used us, but when they gained enough knowledge they had no reason to keep sending us reviews and patches," Rusin said. "At a certain point they (Apple) decided it was a waste of time for them, and at that point the communication just stopped...We had hopes that they would pour resources into KHTML. But that never happened."

So, is Apple being naughty?

What do you think?

From what I've heard, Apple believes their development branch of the project has advanced beyond the main project and want the KHTML team to adopt the Apple branch a new baseline. Obviously, there's been some push back. The lead Apple developer came from the open source community, so it's not very likely that Apple is just turning their backs on the KHTML folks. Open source is about cooperation, but it's also about competition. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

while the agreement simply says that apple much release patches of the changes made. they don't have any requirements to make it readable or even understandable to anyone else. they made the changes available, and that's all that's required.

now apple could go the extra mile and make it so that the KHTML guys can make their work easier in moving those patches over to KHTML... that's what i think they should do. but they aren't required.

being naughty? no. just kinda self-centered.
