As noted by Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5854649/best-costume-use-two-ipads-to-create-an-awesome-gaping-hole-in-your-gut), one NASA engineer has used the iPad 2's FaceTime video conferencing feature to his advantage when creating a Halloween costume:A very smart dude by the name of Mark Rober figured out that if you strap two iPad 2's to yourself, you can create this incredible, freaky hole effect. The two video conferenced iPads gives the impression of a gaping hole in the middle of his torso.

Wow... that's really great.

But I guess he needs a decent WiFi connection to achieve that!

Or you could just cut a real hole in your body. It'd be a lot cheaper, not to mention more realistic.

Hahaha that's great. I'm guessing it might look better in-person, cuz the camera recording the screens makes a lot of glare

Haha, agreed. That totally made the otherwise kinda boring video worth it. (Cool idea. But the video itself was pretty meh, until the end.)

How hard would it be to at least line up the entrance and exit holes?

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to... no wait, you do. Who has a spare iPad laying around?! lol Clever but, expensive costume.

If the screens were less brighter, it'd make for a pretty realistic "hole."

But then the illusion wouldn't work as the iPad camera is not in the middle of the iPad - the iPad camera on the rear iPad has to be in the same position as the middle of the screen on the front iPad, so the two iPads have to be offset.

meh, I thought of this as well but that would involve spending another $500 on a second iPad I don't need or borrowing someone's who probably wouldn't be willing to lend it...

Good idea but it looks pretty poor in action. Maybe he should have dimmed the screen or used the ambient lighting feature, or used something with an OLED display and fixed 60fps camera? (does such a thing even exist? With a big enough display I mean)

Ben must be a PC user whereas this other just strapped a couple iPads to his chest and done. Plus it's 2 way and plays angry birds.

That is very cool! I would love to try it out. But... there are two things I see wrong with this:

1. You need 2 iPad 2s
2. You need 2 iPads you are willing to get messed up. I guess it would depend on the type of party but I would be a little worried the iPads would get messed up.

Personally I think it's a completely unrealistic "hole in the body" effect - you can see the rest of the iPad screen beneath his clothes and it doesn't even align properly

In fact, I think it looked more like this

than some amazing hallowe'en stunt

I always thought this was going to be the next way the military was going to cloak their vehicles, instead of camo. Many cameras on one side broadcasting the signal to the opposite side of the vehicle. The only hiccup was the availability of a flexible screen that could be wrapped around the vehicle, those screens are now becoming available to really make this viable.

How does one respond to something that stupid? I've written and deleted 4 comments already and am simply left with "wow". (and not in a good way)

In theory, a surface that projects what's behind it doesn't have to be flexible and be fitted to the vehicle in order to be hidden. If you walked holding a big rectangular screen out in front of you, it would look invisible as long as it showed exactly what should be behind it, including what's behind you adjusted for your relative positions. The trouble is that it would be from one particular point of view, so if two people were in front on you in different positions they couldn't both see the correct image on a flat screen.

Great idea. Can use two iPhones and get the same result, only a smaller hole.

I'm going try that now, since we have two iphone 4's.

Bothers me but not as much as you misspelling "alligned" :) (I kid) Still it's an original idea and pretty clever.

Low Battery
10% of costume remaining

I like this idea very much. Although, I feel it's a bit much to be walking around with two iPads taped onto your body. Especially at a party.
