View Full Version : Any way I can hook up a SATA drive to my Mac as an external?

I am selling my gaming PC soon. But I want to take out the HD before selling it. But the problem is that the HD is a SATA drive, and I can't find a firewire or USB 2.0 external enclosure for SATA drives. Does any exist? Should I keep the SATA drive, or leave it in the PC I'm selling?

This (http://www.cwol.com/serial-ata/sata-drive-enclosures.htm) was from the first google that came to mind -- "external sata enclosure".
:)

They all (if you read carefully) actually outputs to SATA. Not USB 2.0 or Firewire. So they won't work with my Mac mini.

What about a SATADock?

Transfer your data and leave it in the PC -- then use the money to buy a new external firewire drive, or a seagate IDE drive with a 5 year warranty that you'll put in a firewire case yourself.

You'll get a new warranty on the new drive... and selling the gamini PC without a HD will get you less money.

 the price is steep... I might as well get a new external drive with that money.

There's no data I want to keep on the PC HD, it's just that it's a nice HD, and a 80 GB extra couldn't hurt. But looks like I'll just leave it in the PC. Oh well, no biggie.

You might want to try this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146255). Or this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146256) . Both are fairly expensive, but may be what you're looking for.

Seems like exactly what I need... One question though, that says 5.25... I can convert a 3.xx" drive into a 5.25"? Would that cost me a pretty penny?

Now to debate whether it's more beneficial to sell it or to keep it. :D

It's like $5 for a bracket, if it doesn't come with one. Otherwise, the connector is the same, and the drive just has extra room in the case. 1.75" to be exact.

I'd sell it (after wiping it clean, of course).

What do those numbers mean anyway?

They are all different CPUs fitted into Apple computers in the past 29 years. The higher number of posts you have, the better CPU you are. :)

Thank you, I've been wondering about those numbers since I started lurking here. :)
