The Montreal-based National Parc's album "Timberland" combines rap, acoustic guitar and drums, with sounds from their "recording studio", any forest they are in. I really can't describe the genre this music is. But it works realy, really well.

Timberland is well known :/ in Texas so I assume everywhere else too

Luxt.. they have since broken up but they released 6 or so records. I can't get enough of them...... Wish they were still making music.

Guano Apes is another....... but I don't think they are "that" unknown.

Mr. Big. They had a hit song "To Be With You" that was #1 for three weeks in 1992. Their other big hit was "Addicted to that Rush." They broke up in 2002, but are getting back together for a Japanese tour with the original members.

I hear ya. Industrial (and synthpop too, for that matter) can always use more feminine influence. Cylab and Angelspit are contributing to the cause, thankfully, as are the female instrumentalists surrounding Rogue in the Crüxshadows.

Here's quite a few that are worthwile, and I'm pretty sure none of them have made it mainstream yet.

Helios
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (almost becoming a cult classic though)
God Is An Astronaut
Sean Hayes (the folk singer)
Jake Fussell
The Morning Benders
No Knife (not a band anymore)
Port O'Brien
Q and not U (also not a band anymore)
Ra Ra Riot
Samantha Crain
Sea Caves
Andrew Bird
The Uglysuit
United Nations
Will Oldham

Well, it's not really a "band", but rather an Orchestra.

I'm not sure how many people know of them, but I LOVE to listen to "Corner Stone Cues". They used to carry it on iTunes, but recently, I can't find any trace of it.....but it's definately worth a listen. Very intense, modern classical-ish music that blends rock/classical/movie score all into one.

And of course, E.S. Posthumus is very good as well. Much like Corner Stone Cues, but it's own flavor.

Long time acoustic duo Trusting Lucy is amazing. Loved by critics on the Central Coast region near San Jose.

And SF Bay Area rock band Ashamed. These guys are the best unsigned band I have ever seen. It's only a matter of time before they make it big.

The best band I have seen that is not a household name, yet signed, is Guitar Wolf from Japan. They are more of a cult band but deserve far more recognition.

NIN.. Is NOT mainstream. They NEVER have been.

Ask ANY teen today if they know of or like Nine Inch Nails, and I am willing to bet money that over 90% of them will say NO.

Pop/Rap/Hip Hop/Alternative - Mainstream

Industrial/Classic Rock/Metal/Nu Metal - Not mainstream

With all the arguments about NIN being "unknown" I would have to say that FZ is more than "unknown" than any other band mentioned in this thread. Anybody that is under the age of 25 most likely has never heard of anything he has ever done, that doesn't mean that they have never heard of him, they just don't know what his style sounds like. Except for the people that have copied his "sound". Argue all you want, nobody except for the people that have a true taste in music know what FZ is all about.

Some relatively obscure yet amazing bands/artists, classified by decade, and for all tastes (the descriptions in brackets are obvious oversimplifications of their styles):

60's: Love (orchestral psych), Nick Drake (sad brit folk), Scott Walker (magical crooner)
70's: Television (guitar-hero punk!?), The Buzzcocks (melodic punk-pop)
80's: The Go-Betweens (pure pop), Shelleyan Orphan (orchestral pop with female vocals), Galaxie 500 (indie rock)
90's: My Bloody Valentine (noisy-pop), Sebadoh (lo-fi melodic grunge), Mazzy Star (psychedelic dreamy folk), Cat Power (heart-wrenching folk)
00's: Magnetic Fields (smartass retro-80's pop), Calexico (mariachi slowcore!?)

If you need help picking up an album of theirs leave me a message!

Agree completely re Scott Walker and the Go-Betweens; an earlier poster mentioned the Gypsy Kings, excellent, and I'd also draw attention to Gitano Family who play similar stuff. However, my own favourite "unknown" band is a splendid group from Portland, Oregon, called Pink Martini who play wonderfully accomplished, eclectic and sublime music.

Cheers

Mates of State, although they are relatively well known on the Indie scene. But most people have never heard of 'em.

scem0

Heh, I used to own a bar near the French Quarter a few years ago, and we managed to get Mates of State for one show - it was an awesome night, and the bar was packed :)

Another band we got a few times that I really liked was the Booda Velvets (http://www.boodavelvets.com/index.html) - unfortunately I think they broke up around '06 or so. (Their website is basically deserted now...)

They're more well-known now, I think, but I got into Machinae Supremacy (http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/) when all they had were collections of MP3s on their website (I think this was around '03/'04.)

Cobblestone Jazz are a three-piece band who play a somewhat improbable fusion of flawlessly engineered 4/4 techno and slippery jazz improv. Check out their excellent recent Traffic Jam EP (http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=6204) (title track here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRwLKIdbtv4)) and their classic (if poorly named) track Lime in Da Coconut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dDh-TdARn0&feature=related).

Imperative Reaction, they are a electronic band and are just amazing.

I love IR's "Giving In To The Change"; makes me wanna get all TechnoViking. I have it on a Metropolis compilation (2004, I think?).

One band that was a huge influence on early 80's hard rock/metal bands, but who never really found as much success as their contemporaries in the 70's (not "unknown", but certainly not hugely famous either...)

Budgie (http://www.budgie.uk.com/)

If you want to hear why they're so good, check out this very Sabbath-sounding track: Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRCpNIzmTwQ&feature=PlayList&p=7193EECDCF6AE0FF&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=43) (really kicks in at 3:25!)

Just mentioned this artist in another thread, he's worth mentioning again. If The Kinks had been a folk band this is what they would have sounded like.

I have been listening to a lot of Avail and Rocket From The Crypt. Brings back good times...

Both are great bands, but they're nowhere close to "unknown". Avail especially. (I mean, they released music on Fat Wreck, Jade Tree, and I believe Lookout - it doesn't get much bigger, in the punk world)

I'm tired, so I won't contribute anything right now.

My favourite, unknown band (well, composer in this instance), is Daiki Kasho. He's a techno/rock composer from Japan who specialises in creating music for video games. You might have heard his songs in the Gran Turismo series (GT3 onwards).

What to Believe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-omD879axE) has been a personal favourite of mine for quite sometime, and so has Good Days Bad Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5wN7JlSwcc&feature=related) and Wicked (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj--KBt1OnM&feature=related).

How about ZOX? Even though "Line in the Sand" was one of WBRU's (95.5, Providence RI ) top songs, most people out of RI haven't heard them, or even heard of them. They describe themselves as "Violin laced reggae-rock", but they are basically great indie/alternative with the melody in the violin.

Favorite songs - Little more time, stupid song, I miss you

(I saw ZOX at Lupos in RI - great show)

Hey everyone! Just thought I'd spread the word on some really sweet deals on concert tickets I found. Even better now that Tinted Windows is currently on tour!!! I just bought my ticket for the Philly show and it only cost me $5!! I can NOT wait for the show... if you haven't seen Tinted live yet- it's a MUST see!!!

All you have to do is select "Subway $5 promotion" and type in promo code "subway$5tix" and you can get your $5 tickets! Can't turn down a cheap ticket to see an amazing band, right???

Top three:

Marina and the Diamonds - they're definitely an "other" sort of band...very eccentric with great female vocals.

The Kills - I think people are starting to know about them...but they're like The Virgins, but on crack.

The Decemberists - Also another eccentric band. They love accordions, too. They've got some epic, lengthy songs. All their songs tell the stories of fictional characters - a lot of their stories are sad, but they're really well put together.

Found this band on Facebook today. Their band, Greek National Road, is some what comparable to The Postal Service's electronic jazz pop? Anyway, they are giving away their first EP, heres the link to their website:

I like Dead By April. I can't say that r unknown as well as I can't say that a lot of people know about them. They didn't record an album, but u can find their songs on the Net. They play atmospheric melodic blalalal METALCORE. Ofc, it's not a classic metalcore like In Flames, cause DBA are very soft.
